The British Army is full of stories of legends.
As Irish Rangers our regiment and past regiments contribute to the great history the British Army has. Even though we must always look forward and prepare for the 21st century threat's, it's still important to look back and remember all those who have gone before us. These are the people who have shaped our service and allow us to contiune to innovate and move forward.
This episodes Legend is Sgt Labalaba an ex Royal Irish Ranger and 22 SAS operator, born in Fiji and lost his life at the age of 30 fighting for his brothers in the battle of Mirbat Oman 1972. He's an iconic figure in the Fijian community and the Royal Irish Regiment.

Thanks a million for sharing the legendary story of our Hero Talaiasi Labalaba, the other Fijian with Labalaba that came to help him is Sekonaia Takavesi. There are also enactments of the actual battle of Mirbat should anyone be interested, a statue of Labalaba is at Hereford and now one in Fiji. All members of the regiment are handed a smaller version of a statue when they leave as appreciation to those who served for the SAS recognising him as one of their many true heroes.......Just to add for your followers, my old man together with Labalaba and a few to name are Asiveni Lutumailagi, Kasiano Qaduadua and my Dad Epeli Matata were the Fijians who joined the Irish Rangers in the the 60's. Funny enough I was one of the young Fijian lads who grew up in Ballymena and went to school in Ballykeel, still hold the Irish Rangers to heart.......

First time on ya channel, superb mate. I have read a lot about the battle of Mirbat. The gun was a 25 pounder, It`s in a museum back here now but i`m not sure which one. I read about Labba when he was still in the Rangers, they were sent to Manchester during the Firemans strike, to crew up the old Green Goddess Fire Engines. On the way to a call out, they were involved in an RTA and one of the guys who was a close friend of labba`s was killed. The call out turned out to be a hoax call.

I loved the rangers, best regiment in the army, ok yep coming from southern ireland I was called a Fenian for a while, (even though I was born in Londonderry and a presbyterian) but the bigots soon changed their tune during op banner in 88-89... But I made many many friends from hardline areas in Belfast, and I still class as my mates, the english guys called me a Fenian and had no idea what exactly a Fenian was..... clowns, so any southern ireland guy or gal watching this vid or post, thinking of an army career, you could do no harm joining the best regiment in the british army, join the rangers....and faugh a ballagh
