WELCOME to Hopwood Hall Estate (AKA "Downton Shabby") in Middleton, England.
This channel follows the unexpected adventures of American Hopwood DePree who, whilst living in Los Angeles, traced his family tree online, and discovered his abandoned 60-room ancestral home "Hopwood Hall Estate" that dates back to 1426! Hopwood was informed that if he didn't do something very soon to save the Hall, it would be lost forever. So he packed his bags and left LA to take on the madcap challenge of his life with a passionate team of supporters and community volunteers, in England.
We share the ups & downs, failures & triumphs of this group effort DIY rescue emergency: learning new skills, discovering house & garden secrets and seeking the inspirations that will be needed to get this Estate back onto her feet once again!

Born in England in 1958, and a teacher you would think I would find this test easy. However. I tried one of the tests blind and really struggled with some of the silly questions the government seem to think every British citizen should know. It is more useful to know where to get a pint of milk at 2am or how to navigate the London tube system ! 😀

Man, it is killing me that you have this massive, amazing house to restore! I'm American, but I'm obsessed with British history (mostly the Tudor period) and LOVE historic Britsh architecture!! I want to live in an historic home soooo bad... one dating from at least the 1700s, though earlier is even better. With my husband's construction & project management skills, and my resourcefulness and love of restoration, it would be perfect! But... I haven't been able to convince him to move to England... yet anyway. I'd settle for an historic, wreck of a chateau in France, if I had to. I live in Florida. It's way too hot, and growing food is hard because there's way too many bugs here that eat EVERYTHING. Can't grow most kinds of flowers that I love because it's just way too hot. And... I feel like I live in a state with ZERO history. We have ONE very old thing here, and that's Saint Augustine, FL that was originally settled by the Spaniards in the 1500s. Other than that, there is zero ancient, or even reasonably historic, buildings in Florida. It sucks. Archaeology, history and historic architecture are my passions. My husband is into historic architecture too, and his ancestry is British (and Scottish). Mine is Irish, French & Italian (probably some British too). We are truly European melting pots by ancestry, which is probably why I love Europe so much. Images I see feel like home. If he was offered a good job there, THEN I could talk him into moving. He and I have been married 24 yrs (& been together for 41 yrs) & I know him like the back of my hand. If I can get him there, I know he'd absolutely love it. It's just getting him to make a change that's the difficult part 😂. Once he does, he's all in. I'll keep praying ... and keeping my fingers crossed. 😊 It's making sure he has a reliable income is the only thing that ever stops him from wanting to try something, or somewhere, new. I guess I'd have to find a way to find reliable, consistent work for him in the UK before I could convince him to move there. Sigh. I'd put our property on the market tomorrow!!!

And, we, the people, lost the right to debate and complain about, humans were once slaves and all the made up problems between black and white skinned humans. Why? , cause we are still SLAVES. Slaving away our time - health - life. Slaving it all away to whom? - to the uncaring governments. Why masons give us the "freedom" to believe whatever we want and live how we want? - to keep us, their slaves, blind and deaf.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that many of the questions you had to answer were extremely arbitrary in nature and ones that the average born an bred UK citizen wouldn't have a clue about. Certainly the 1969 voting question wouldn't only be a best guess at best for most people just as it was for your friend. The biscuit question was a very good trick question. Thanks! I don't really remember most of them but here were 24 as I recall - some were fairly easy and some were much more in depth. I highly recommend preparing with the online study materials that they offer as that was a great way to prepare!

What were the requirements to be a citizen, or even to get a visa to live there? How much did it cost? My husband is hoping to get his US citizenship this year...hopefully

As a Loyalist I really don't need to become a proper citizen. I simply pray for The Big Mistake to be corrected and the U.S. to become a sort of Northern Ireland thingy at last. Will write my king about this soon. BTW, not really kidding. My namesake ancestors were saved by Queen Anne from the Catholics and set up in Pennsylvania back in the early 1700s. Lifetime inherited debt to the UK and the crown, indeed. Ironically, I'm now in Minnesota where I've met similar namesake Germans who were rescued by the Swedish Protestant kings. History is depth.
