'Exploring the Most Iconic Estate in England! | Stourhead'
Join History Hit presenter Alice Loxton as she discovers the secrets of Stourhead, one of the most fascinating country houses in the world. As well as providing the setting for perhaps the most famous scene in Pride & Prejudice, the Stourhead estate has a storied history of its own.
Once upon a time, this house was at the forefront of art, of design, of architecture of interiors. We’re talking big, bold new ideas which had never been done before. This place is a hub of creativity, of experimentation. And once more, it’s had a pretty dramatic past, peppered with outrageous parties, terrible tragedy and even a visit of King Alfred the Great. Hold onto your hats, because there’s a lot of history to take in!

A few more interesting facts. The family became friendly with the writer Thomas Hardy, Alfred's Tower is even mentioned in one of his poems. Several workers are believed to have drowned in the lake over the centuries. After a fire in 1902 its thought all the servants were sacked, despite them rescuing most of the house content and losing all their possessions in the fire. From the 1850s there was a real problem with gangs of poachers coming into the estate. Mantraps were set to try and catch them. The gamekeeper was murdered by a gang of poachers who were transported to Australia as felons.

Really enjoy these videos of the estates! As history goes, we never really hear about them (history student for 6 years now and nobody utters a word about them) so it is lovely to have some insight , especially since they are some of my favourite parts of history. They really seem to bring together lots of historic people into one place. I would really recommend Houghton Hall in Norfolk for a future video, the house of the first prime minister. Its very well maintained and will have plenty to show. The only problem is it is still owned by the Cholmondeley family, and so extra permission would definitely be needed in order to show some areas/film on the estate, though it is usually open to visitors! Keep up the excellent content 😎👍

Love this place, I grew up down the road from here in Gillingham. Stour head and Heavens Gate were regular haunts of my family. Stour head is one of the things that missed when I moved to Cumbria. Does anyone know if they still have those Events where there were Madricals and you could bring a picnic, I think they even put on Swan Lake one year.😊

I lived in the town of Gillingham, we lived in the old mill house in the centre of the town, we grew up with a large garden with the river running through it. One year we were flooded out because Stourhead opened their sluice gates and someone forgot to tell my parents so we didn’t open ours😟 In the summer of 1976 my brothers and I spent the whole holidays swimming in the river and the mill pond. Jumping from the first floor window into the millpond😱drove mum nuts. I seem to remember that this year of all years the local council decided to close our local pool to make it an indoor one but I’m in my sixties now and memories are not always accurate 😊

I know I am just repeating with many others said but I cannot help it. Alice Loxton is a pleasure to listen to and to watch. She has such a charming and funny personality that makes any video presented by her a pleasurable experience. BTW, Stourhead is a perfect example of the wonderful concept of the English landscaped garden. Designed by man but looking so deceptively natural it is a greatest contribution made by Great Britain to Western civilization.

@@josephkarl2061 Yeah, agreed, you didn't build a house that size unless you owned half the town or the entire county. I've two near me that are just so vast in scale. Acres and acres landscaped purely for the view from the dining room. There is a bridge like that in one of the stately homes in the next county and I think I read that the owner moved it because it spoilt the vista. I think grassing a bridge is genius. You could only see it if you actually were close enough to walk over it.

Their is a ancient roman bridge in milton Keynes Buckinghamshire that is beautifully arched like that bridge in stourhead, stowe gardens has two beautiful bridges like that too . I think the bridges were built that way due to the roman and greek influences of the 18th century Georgian enlightenment period.
