Texan here, our capitol isn't dusty like he thinks but actually a shade of pink. That comes from a type of granite called Red Sunset that is native to Texas and was quarried from Granite Mountain just outside of Marble Falls, a small town in the Austin area. That same hue is on a lot of the government buildings in Austin.

"Capitol" with an "O" is used to describe the building or group of buildings where legislative bodies meet.

Its the second oldest behind Maryland and also served as the Capitol of the Confederacy. The building behind in Old City Hall and people on my tours actually thought harry potter was filmed there....Funny thing is Daniel Radcliff actually filmed part of Imperium there while I was giving tours. On the second highest hill in Richmond. Had planned to build on the highest hill so his friend ended up buying up all the land thinking it would take off in price...bad mistake.

Fun facts about the Texas capitol, the building is larger than the US Capitol Building. The construction was paid for in a barter instead of cash. The builders built the capitol in exchange for land in the Pan Handle area. And lastly, the exterior of the building is lined completely in Texas red granite which is what gives it it’s color.

First, I always liked how Florida kept the center section of the old Capitol surrounded by the modern tower and Senate and House offices as a visual metaphor for the state's change from a small, old Southern state to one of the largest populations in modern times. The view he showed from the west down Apalachee Parkway showing the tower with a dome on either side is also a visual metaphor for what state government is doing to all of us.

He designed the Illinois state house in 1868 and the Iowa statehouse in 1871. Iowa's captiol went through four architects supervising the work over the course of the 15 years it took to complete it (2 resigned or quiet and 1 died during construction). Only the last supervising architect stayed on the job until completion. I personally love the style and design of the Ilinois statehouse, mixing Second Empire, Rennaissance Revival, and Classical elements into one giant structure.

Often if you see a dusty green dome on one of these buildings, the dome is made of copper. There are still bullet holes in the walls from when Huey Long was assassinated in the building in 1935 just a couple years after it was completed. Also in the Senate chamber there is a pencil in the ceiling that was lodged there in 1970 when a bomb was detonated. It is a shame the photographs do not include the entire grounds that make up each capitol's complex. North Dakota had the most lovely gardens leading up to the capitol building of all the ones I visited on a driving tour of state capitals one summer. (Side note about the interior: the lowest level I explored had a kind of miniature museum to honor North Dakota's heroes. Included among the honorees was Lawrence Welk, a fact I found nostalgically charming.) Surrounded to obscurity by towering office buildings, Ohio's capitol, which was undergoing extensive exterior remodeling at the time, struck me as the most forlorn.
