You have to watch out for ice everywhere. Ice machines need to be cleaned regularly because moulds and slimes can grow in the ice making mechanism. I used to manage a pizza place and we had a schedule for cleaning the ice machine because of this fact. If you can get you water and ice separately so you can look for bits of junk on your ice before adding your drink.

Sweet and savory dishes aren't just an American thing. In the Middle Ages, there were quite a few sweet and savory dishes in Europe. I made one such dish a couple years ago, it's called biancomangiare, there's a modern version that's just a regular dessert but the medieval version is almost like a bowl of oatmeal or porridge but it's made with bread and chicken and almond milk, and it is sweetened. It actually doesn't taste savory at all but it's very filling. These days sweet foods are just empty calories.

Allow me to speak up for grits. They're called 'grits' because they are made from dried corn kernels; the kernels are broken off the cob and roughly ground, leaving a gritty pile of pure corn. They get cooked up until they end up like a bland porridge. From there, they are seasoned just like rice. You can eat grits (or rice) like a savory (salt, pepper, then a choice of butter, gravy, or cheese; some add cheese and shrimp) or you can eat grits (or rice) like a sweet (usually sugared, but may be honey or a syrup). Mostly, grits are served savory, with breakfast, alongside fried eggs and either sausage or bacon. Sweetened grits (or rice) are eaten like hot cereal, with milk poured on it and maybe some berries. While savory grits can be a side dish at other mealtimes, sweetened grits are always eaten at breakfast time. Love corndogs, although I eat turkey or chicken corndogs; I don't eat pork or beef. They're quite good. I currently have about 20 of them in my freezer. It turns out Sweet Potato Casserole was an invention of a marshmallow manufacturer in 1917. The industries of wide-circulation magazines and advertising were established in America in the first decades of the 20th century, and one way food companies enticed people to buy their products was to include original recipes using their products. This is where Heinz introduced their original recipe of Beans on Toast! Not sure why Hot Pockets are supposed to be 'disgusting' or weird; not a lot of difference between them and pasties. I rather like the Chicken and Broccoli Hot Pockets. I couldn't live without ice, and I've tried! My freezer's too small to accommodate frozen food and an ice tray, so I now have an ice maker that sits on my kitchen countertop making ice all day. I need ice to regulate my body temperature from the inside. Without ice, I overheat, even in winter. Sweet corn is a foundational agricultural staple in the US. Its growth is even regulated by Congress, which gives tax credits to some farmers to grow it and tax credits to others NOT to grow it. Corn is sold as human food and livestock food, especially to cattle, pigs, and poultry. It's used to make fuel for vehicles and it's refined to make various grades of syrup. Corn is artificially kept cheap by Congressional regulation, so there is a lot of it and we use it in everything. At no point in any corn product is there any nutritional value beyond empty calories and there is science that proves it tricks the brain into not recognizing the body's own satiety levels; this means anything sweetened by corn syrup makes you keep eating past fullness, which is great for sales for manufacturers of corn-sweetened products. I prefer whole wheat bread, not white bread. Better fiber, nutrition, and flavor. Yes; Americans love their battered deep-fried foods. But it took the Scots to go from Scots Eggs to battered deep-fried Mars bars. The jury's still out on whether it was Americans or the Japanese who invented battered deep-fried ice cream.

Being a Southern gal, I firmly believe no proper Southerner would disrespect the noble sweet potato or yam by burying it under marshmallows, but I do think it's fine to add butter and maybe a sweetener like brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey. Some pecans, cinnamon, or orange zest is also nice. Yes, even the 'traditional' Green Bean Casserole dates back to that same time period; Campbell's couldn't sell their Cream of Mushroom soup, so they created this recipe to create a market for it.@@skyydancer67

This is for millie. Your mental issue with hot dogs can be solved quite easily and positively. What you want to do is get the brand Hebrew National hot dogs. They are hugely popular in America. What separates them from all the other Hot dogs is the fact that they are required by Jewish law to be kosher. This ensures that there is nothing funky going on! They are delicious and I might even say more delicious than almost any other brand hot dog on the market. Add that to the purity of the product. Because it's kosher and you have a winner. Delicious and pure.

Another from SC here, and I agree, though I'd point out that "shrimp and grits" is more than just two ingredients. There's usually a flavorful sauce pulling it all together, and everyone has their own take on what that sauce should be. There's also the possibility of different grits: a coarser or smoother grind (perhaps a mix for a more sophisticated texture), and maybe golden hominy is used instead of white. I've had a lot of great interpretations of the dish, and admittedly a few bad ones. Biscuits and Gravy is another dish with a wide range of interpretations. Most are delicious, though you're probably not going to get a winner if you buy it in the frozen food section of the grocery.

The US reactions videos are getting to the point, in my opinion, where they've run their course. Every single channel I follow reacts to the same ones. Everyone who comes to the US comes to US does food videos. How about reacting to our attractions or at least going to a local diner instead of chain restaurant. Some of the videos have become disrespectful to our country and our culture. Using words like disgusting are unnecessary. I see many channels now are reacting to our old TV shows like I Love Lucy, Seinfeld, All in the Family...there are very interesting because the reactors really discuss them.

I've suggested visiting a Civil Rights Museum, Native American festivals, getting to know something about Mexican, Creole and other cultures, but everyone I've watched, only want to visit for the burgers, barbeque, Walmart and Disney.

The problem is most hot dogs outside the US tend to be pork only and don’t really have the right spice nor fat content. America leans heavily into the beef hotdog always spicing correctly and it’s made with trimmings from normal cuts just chopped into paste and stuffed into a casing. Pork sausages don’t do that and have to use a lot of random filler bits that you don’t want to eat. We also use nitrate salt out of pure tradition but it’s being phased out for a different salt although some butcher still use it. Beef is also our best choice to get around the Kosher diet restriction as the very large Jewish population do not eat pork or certain people can’t handle pork at all hence the beef is the meat of choice. I actually prefer the all beef hotdog myself.

I am in Northeastern Minnesota & my mom grew up in central Wisconsin - she was a home economics major in college & worked as a county extension agent before she had kids. Very few of her "fruit salad" recipes only had fruit. I have my mom's recipe box & cookbooks that date back to the 1950s & there's lots of the creative Fruit Salad recipes in them - gelatin was quite popular back in the day. Our local church & community cookbooks have whole sections of "salads" & few stick with fruits & veggies themselves. None of them are titled ambrosia salad - even if they are similar. My mom made "Salads" with fruit (canned or fresh), pop, jello, Snickers, Dream Whip, Cool Whip, Whipped Cream, nuts, mini marshmallows, etc. Heck, even the actual Salads my mom liked when eating out still had unhealthy ingredients along with the veggies. Chicago style deep dish Pizza is heaven for cheese lovers. Imagine so much cheese that you can't put it on the top or it would burn. So instead you put the cheese and "toppings" in the middle nice and THICK and put the sauce over the top instead of under the cheese to keep the thick layer of cheese so "gooey" so that when you take a bite, the cheese stretches on forever. Non-Americans: Chicken and waffles? Have you eaten waffles with sausage, ham, or bacon on the side? Corndogs/hotdogs? Do you know what goes into the sausage you enjoy? Cereal? There's lots of US cereal that isn't sweet. Most sweet cereal is marketed towards kids. Ice? It's not the water; it's the lazy people who don't clean the ice-making machines. Twinkies? If you put icing on the OUTSIDE of a sponge cake, would you still hate it? Grits? Ground corn..... depends on how you make it. Cheese grits, shrimp grits, or with just butter and black pepper as a side dish for your bacon and eggs... yum! You can put some sausage gravy on grits as well as biscuits. Chicago pizza? Personally, I don't consider it as "pizza", but it's DELICIOUS all the same. Root beer? Yeah, you either love it or hate it. If you hate it, put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it and try it again. A must for y’all to do when you come is go to a Waffle House. They are mostly found in the south, hence they have great Grits, and Biscuits & Gravy. Not the best, but very much like grandma would make at home growin’ up. For Root Beer, you must try that at an A&W restaurant, in a frosty mug. Unfortunately, there’s not many A&W Drive In Restaurants around anymore. But if you can find one, their foot long coney dog and an order of onion rings are classic favorites. To get deep fried anything you really need to go to a fair. They always have tons of deep fried everything down the midway in every fair I’ve ever been to. Lastly, yes Millie, when you think of what goes into hot dogs, they are disgusting even though they taste delicious and because of all the carcinogens in them they are worse for you than smoking cigarettes, HOWEVER, speaking as a Vegan, Aldi has a delicious Vegan Hot Dog that actually tastes like a hot dog but just doesn’t leave your mouth with that greasy coating that you get with regular hot dogs. 6:04 you definitely have to try Barq's Root Beer! It's the only root beer with caffeine. I am in Northeastern Minnesota & it took quite a while for Barq's to become available up here. I remember staying at the 4-H Building for different summer camps & the MN State Fair in the mid1980s -(it's in the state fairgrounds in the Twin Cities Metro Area) the building is 3 floors & no elevator (at that time). The ground floor was the public access display space during the fair, the 2nd floor was the cafeteria & the stage/auditorium (most of the camp activities were there) & the 3rd floor was the dorms. They had 5 pop machines (pop is Minnesotan for soda) on the 2nd floor - 1 had Coke, Sprite, etc & the others were all Barq's. I kinda felt bad that the Coke delivery guy had to haul all of the cases upstairs! He was there every day (sometimes multiple times a day) whenever I was there. I remember stopping at the store & stocking before the 3+ hour drive home so I could have it at home for a while 😂. A&W, Dad's, Mug & the other brands of root beer taste a bit different than Barq's does. Trying Diet versions are even more different in taste - I hate the after taste the sugar substitutes leave & they have given me an instant migraine ever since I tried them back in the 1970s already. If you are someplace that has an A&W restaurant, you can actually buy a gallon jug of root beer to take home - my aunt in Wisconsin always had a jug in her fridge since the town has an A&W. I used to like the other brands of root beer at a drive-in restaurant because they used to all serve it in a frosty mug (lots have switched to disposable cups). They basically just freeze the thick glass mugs right after washing to get a layer of ice in it.
