Do you have even THE FIRST CLUE just how difficult the tests are, in order to get citizenship in the United States? Studying for all of those tests is HARD and people who succeed in doing so SHOULD be proud of themselves. it takes patience, commitment and actual real work in order to get it all memorized so that when you take the tests, you can pass. Anybody (such as myself) who was born here are automatically citizens. Most of us are lazy enough that we would not be able to successfully pass those tests. Those who take and pass those tests REALLY HAVE ACTUAL CAUSE TO BE PROUD. I do not have a problem AT ALL with this woman refusing to answer the way YOU want her to answer. Heads up from an American - you wouldn't feel that way about England if you had lived during WWII, especially if you were in or around London during the Blitz. You should watch the movie "Mrs Miniver" with Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. FYI - The late Queen, when she was 18 yr old Princess Elizabeth, dug in her heels and fought her father until he gave in and let her join the British Army during WWII. She enlisted as 2nd Subaltern (2nd Lt) Elizabeth Windsor and served as a vehicle mechanic. She was ans still is the only female member of the British royal family to ever serve in the military.

What I found sad was some of what I heard these young folk saying about Great Britain. I am an American. I am proud of our history. I am proud of the story related in this video and, though some of the inacuracies bother me, I tear up at the essence of the story and at what our flag represents to us. I am saddened that it carries that meaning to fewer and fewer of our young people and recognize that Britain is merely a bit further down that path that we are because Great Britain does have a proud history and there are things that should fill you with pride. The US had legitimate grievances against Britain in the War of 1812 and the wounds of our revolution, where we separated from Britain were still fresh. Britain was a large colonial power that circumvallated the globe. Britain was often extremely arrogant and failed to respect the rights of other nations and peoples. The Brits can still be arrogant at times (as can we), but they also accomplished wonders. The Brits decided that slavery was morally repugnant and became the first nation to outlaw the practice. In their arrogance, they then tried to force the abolition of slavery upon the rest of the world. Yes, that was arrogant. It was also morally right. Britain often fought the war on slavery alone. Britain took upon itself incredible debt to stamp out slavery, not at home but across the world. That debt was finally paid off fully only nine years ago. British lives policed the seas to end the practice. It was only slowly accepted by other nations and still has not been accepted in fact by many. This is but one example. There are others. Britain has its warts as does my nation. It is by being aware of those warts that they were excised. I find it sad that in this day, so many are trying to erase that history. Like Santayana, I fear that this will doom us to eventually repeat these mistakes. My family claims Scottish descent. We came to America because, after Culloden, it was not particularly healthy for followers of Bonnie Prince Charlie to remain in the British isles. I wore a kilt to my wedding and had pipers. Sometimes it is fun to remember my Scottish roots. Other times it can be an embarrassment (I'm thinking of haggis and the SNP) but ultimately, I am not a Scot. I am a Texan from the USA. I am proud of that even though there are some things in our past that make me wince. I think we have done more good in the world than evil. I happen to believe that your nation has as well. I hope we get better. I pray that y'all will as well. When we fail, I pray we have the grace to do better next time. I think, mostly, we have (that we includes the USA and GB). The event was the bombardment of Ft McHenry during the seige of Baltimore. After 2 land assaults had failed by the British, a navel assault was called for, but to enter the harbor the guarding fort needed to be neutralized to remove the "boom chains" stretch across the entrance of the harbor. On the 13th of Sept 1814 the British fleet bombarded the fort for over 25 hours, exhausting most of their ammunition, but leaving the fort still in operational condition and too dangerous to press a close range engagement decided to withdraw. Mr.Key being not only a attorney, but a amateur poet and being on one of the prison barges in the bay at the time and not being allowed to leave during the engagement, had a front row seat for the entire event.

At the time the British had the largest and strongest army and navy in the world. The fear of 20k plus red suits marching towards you was very intimidating. The Brits had the largest strongest Navy until World War 2. Your right hand goes over your heart :)

I knew he was gonna stop before the end. Ok, hear the real story. This was during the War of 1812 not the Revolutionary War as the narrator suggests( This is about 40 or so years after the Revolutionary War, however, I can still see a British Admiral still calling us a colony). The Brits who were a superpower at the time had just burnt down the White House. Now they had set their eyes on Baltimore. They first attacked the city with troops but were halted by the defenses of the city. They decided to attack the ship docks to enter the city. First, they had to bypass Ft Henry. They used 20 ships of various sizes, not hundreds. The Ft. had about a thousand troops along with some militias and civilians. The conflict cost the Americans 6 lives in the engagement. The fort was well-built and defended. The lawyer who was to negotiate was originally sent to get the release of a popular doctor but also took on the job of getting the other prisoners released. He wrote the poem, but it did not become our anthem until the mid-1930s. When a German author put music to it. The Brits gave up the fight and Baltimore was saved. Shortly after that they went to New Orleans and had their ass given to them in the last major battle of the war. Here is the kicker. The quote he attributes to GW was actually from the Mexican Revolutionary War leader Sabata and his men who would shout it out when being executed. You can actually look it up on Google. The maker of this video was questioned on his accuracy. He then makes a second video to explain it, but it is just a video of what if it did happen this way. Love my country and yes we Americans of all types love and respect the flag. There are many other events like this one that make us proud. It's been a long time since I read any history so my version may also not be accurate.

The “colonies” moniker was done away with in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Upon signing this treaty, Great Britain recognized her former 13 colonies as the United States of America. The War of 1812 kicked off, mainly due to impressment of American sailors into the Royal Navy (there were other reasons, but the sailors being “recruited” at gunpoint was the major.) Both the US and British Armies had won battles but never a decisive victory. On the naval front, the fledgling US Navy had six ‘super’ frigates that were armed with up to 52 guns (or cannons). The most famous of these was the USS Constitution, she sank or captured five warships of the Royal Navy - she is still on active duty to this very day and can still sail under her own power.

A little background if I may. This event happened during the war of 1812. The Revolution happened in 1776 establishing the USA. This was when the British forces returned to end it. Fort McHenry was and still is at the mouth of the Potomac River that leads from the open waters directly to Washington, DC. The fort was equipped with old cannons that could not reach the British ships that were firing on it, however, they could protect the entrance to the Potomac River and sink any ship that tried to pass. So the British either had to destroy the fort or be destroyed trying to get past it. This made it an all or nothing gamble for both sides. If the British Navy got past the fort they would sail unopposed directly to the Capitol of the young United States. If this, the largest armada Great Britain ever assembled. the most powerful in the world could not get past Fort McHenry now, it never would. Now you understand. The National Anthem concludes with a question: "Does the Star Spangled Banner yet wave o're the land of the free and the home of the brave?" This doesn't inquire if the flag still waves but rather, are we still the land of the free and the home of the brave? Every generation has to answer this inquiry. Because Freedom isn't Free.

As a yank, I always looked toward Britain as a father figure. They gave us so much. We, unfortunately, have an independent spirit. We believe in people. We do not ask for help from others, which we could do for ourselves, and we lead by example with kindness, perseverance and respect (granted this is what I hope America would do, but it's a large country and we have made many mistakes). Britain at this time is just trying to keep a part of its empire that it paid a lot of money and blood for. I just paused briefly at the 2:59 minute mark to write this comment to clarify the 'prisoner exchange' thing. This video is regarding the War of 1812. Anyway, the prisoners held by both sides were not regular citizens who broke laws in England or in the USA. These were prisoners of war...captured soldiers. The USA had captured British soldiers, and the British had captured US soldiers. So, the prisoner exchange is regarding each country (the USA and England) acting in good faith and honor in each releasing captured soldiers. Paused at the 8:55 minute mark: Yes, Britain and the USA were at odds with each other in that era. Remember, the USA was initially a composition of 13 colonies of England (the original 13 colonies were comprised of the following states: Connecticut, Georgia, Rhode Island, New York, Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia). For years there had been growing tensions between the mother country, England, and her 13 colonies in America. So, by 1776 those 13 British colonies declared themselves independent from England, and declaring themselves a new nation called 'The United States of America'. From the moment the 'Founding Fathers' of this new nation sent England this 'Declaration of Independence', those USA Founding Fathers were immediately rendered as treasonous by the British. Thus the American Revolution started, which was the war between the newly created USA and Britian --- that war lasted from 1776 to 1783, and the USA was victorious. However, even though the USA/British war ended in 1783, there were still tensions between the two nations, and about 30 years later in 1812, the British attacked and invaded the USA (again, the USA was still a relatively new nation, of just over 40 years old). This video is about that short war that occurred in 1812 when the British attacked and invaded the young USA nation. Anyway, I'm American and I love my country...but I also love England. I've been there many times (have family in London etc). You guys have an amazing country, and you should definitely be proud to be British. Just remember, that EVERY nation and culture on Earth have been similarly guilty of horrific deeds, most of which have been lost to history. We all came from tribes which were conquered by bigger tribes, and which were then conquered by town-states and city states, and eventually nations with defined borders. No region, no culture, and no race of people are without guilt sometime in their existence throughout history.

The flag at the Smithsonian did not fly during the battle and was not damaged in any way by the British. That flag was raised the morning after the battle. The holes you see are from the commander of the fort illegally selling pieces of the flag after the battle.

Iam very proud to say that I am an American. I stand for the flag and kneel for the cross. The debt for our flag and our country was paid for with the patriots' blood. This is why our flag must never touch the ground. We have too much pride in our country and our freedom. Freedom from oppression, freedom from tyranny, you want to see another part of America being proud and helping others, look at what happened during 9/11. We came together and we fought hard to find any life that we could, at the Twin Towers. First responders from all over the country went to New York to help any way that they could. We did not lay down and crawl under a rock, we came out fighting and the fight is still there.

Good video!! This was happening during the War of 1812. The war lasted from 1812-1814. Also, remember that Britain was fighting the Napoleonic Wars at the very same time. The war was against Britain for various reasons, mainly for IMPRESMENT. British naval ships would stop other ships from different nations, board them with the excuse of searching for British deserters and grab a bunch of crewmen and take them aboard their own ships, thus impressing them into service with the Royal Navy. The British did this quite a bit to American merchant ships. America would complain and file suits against Britain according to international law of the time but to no avail - Britain just did whatever it felt like at the time. Eventually war was declared, and the USA was drastically unprepared for war with Britain. Britain had a good-sized army in Canada where most of the fighting took place along the border and other locations during the early part of the war. Britain decided to try and end this war by invading America via the Chesapeake Bay area, captured Washington DC after the Americans were defeated at the Battle of Bladensburg and burned the city to the ground. Legend has it that a terrible storm arose with torrential rains and a tornado thus extinguishing the fires to the city. Afterwards, the British sailed up the Chesapeake Bay in the hopes of eliminating Fort McHenry and capturing Baltimore. Failing to subdue the Americans at Fort McHenry, they then withdrew. Again, remember that Britain's primary concern during this time period was defeating Napoleon on the Continent. Once Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, Britain sent a large expeditionary force to try and capture the major American city of New Orleans. The British were thoroughly defeated at New Orleans. However, an irony to this battle was that it was actually fought in 1815 - a few months AFTER peace was declared with the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. With the communications problems of the time, the opposing forces did NOT receive word that the war was over until after the battle. This is a SIMPLIFIED HISTORY of the War of 1812, am sure other commentors will tear this apart and/or ADD more helpful information.

The UK didn't "allow" the US the take over. The UK couldn't compete even before WW2, where the US economy had surpassed the empire at its peak. Once WW2 ended the UK had nothing left and then this was exacerbated by the UK letting go of colonies. Also the US and UK were not allies at first. The US originally was 13 colonies under the british and was the first colony to fight the british and win independence

If you look up the Battle of Baltimore, you'll see that this video is almost a complete fabrication. Only the most basic details are true, that Key was there, that a battle was fought. But there was no pile of dead men holding up the flagpole. Only four people died in the bombardment, one of whom was a woman. It wasn't the "entire Royal Navy", that's just ridiculous. It was a small-ish fleet that bombarded the fort from maximum range (where their guns were at their least effective) as a distraction for a ground skirmish happening elsewhere. When it became clear that the fight on land wasn't a winnable one, both the British troops and fleet effectively shrugged and moved on to more important targets, both sides taking minimal losses. There weren't any prisoners that Key "breathlessly passed word to", that was pure fiction. The only prisoner involved was a doctor by the name of Beanes who had already been released by the British before the bombardment began. Beanes and Key were on their own vessel at the time, which under the terms of the truce they had with the British flotilla was not allowed to leave until combat operations were concluded. This entire "battle" was basically nothing. Literally the only reason a petty skirmish like this is even remembered outside of the footnotes of dry military history textbooks is because Key wrote the "Star Spangled Banner" about it. While there are many awesome and amazing moments in American history, this really isn't one of them. Don't let liars and con-men like the pastor from the recording feed you historical falsehoods. Read up on the real story whenever you can.

I lived in England from 1970 through 1974 as a kid. The English people were extremely patriotic back then. Just 25 years after winning WW II, there was still a great feeling of national pride. I don't know what happened to y'all over the last 50 years, but you have a beautiful country, rich in history. They must not teach it in school anymore. As someone who served in the US Military the Anthem and Old Glory mean very much to me and my brothers. When I see Americans disrespect either I tend to see red and have to fight to not commit violence. I’ve handed folded flags to the families of 13 men I called brother. It’s not something to disrespect. That’s why it’s been so polarizing when Colin crapernqck decided he’d turn his back on the country who paid him millions to play a children’s game. I think if a lot of these ungrateful “Americans” had to fight to defend the rights they take for granted they’d change their tune. It's wild af to study the strength of the British Empire in those days. I'm sure this isn't taught in any school curriculum here or these, for obvious reasons, but it's insane. In those days, the British Empire owned the UK, the entirety of the known parts of North, Central and South America, the entirety of continental Africa (except Ethiopia and Liberia), India, Australia, New Zealand, many island nations of the Caribbean and the south pacific, and large swaths of land in the middle east, China and Russia. Not to mention, the royalty of the UK were in some way or another related to the royalty of most European nations. At one point, they had control of 1/3 the population of planet earth. Its a valid comparison when you compare the power, control, wealth and military force of the British Empire at its peak vs the Roman Empire at its peak

This was the War of 1812. There are a few inconsistencies with this video but for the most part it's accurate. The Fort was Fort McHenry, not Fort Henry. It's on the Chesapeake Bay in the Baltimore Harbor and I've been there a few times. Also, the US no longer had "colonies" at that time and England was no longer out "mother country" as we had defeated England by 1776 and had won our independence from them. So this was England attempting to re-colonize the US and bring us back under the monarchy. They did manage to set the White House on fire but ultimately we kicked your ass for a second time.

We won the Revolutionary War with the British. This is the War of 1812 when the British returned to reclaim the US. A couple of months after this the US and British signed a peace agreement. We've been buddies ever since.

Every morning at 0800 on the Base I work and on all US Military Bases (Navy and Marine, the Army and Air Force might do it sunrise) The Star Spangled Banner is played as the American Flag is hosted. If you are outside and in you are a Military member in uniform or if you are a current Military member or retired Military member, or a Veteran, you turn toward where the Flag is being hosted and render a salute holding it till the all clear is played. If you are in your vehicle you aret to stop and stay stationary till the all clear. Every morning I hear it playing while at work, I will sing the song in my head.

Our conflict was only at the very start of the USA -- back when we were only 13 colonies -- and were fighting England for our independence. Since that time, we have become the best of allies.
