Some years back I was with a group of Americans going from Paris to Normandie. One gentleman, Mr. Winters, was 83 years old and a WW II veteran. We were getting out our passports to show, however Mr. Winters was still trying to get his out of the bag when he reached the agent. The French agent asked, "Have you ever been to France before and Mr. Winters replied that he had. Then the agent said "Well then, you should know when you reach this point, you should have your passport in hand!" We all gasped at the rudeness of saying that to an 83 year old man. Mr. Winters did not hesitate as he said "son, the last time I came to France, I came in at Omaha Beach and could not find a Frenchman around to show a passport to". We all burst out laughing and applauding. The agent's face was brick red and he did not utter another word. Just thought you'd enjoy that little story. When we got to Normandie, we could not have asked for nicer people. They were very pleasant and extremely accommodating, There are nice people all over the world. Actually I loved the Brits and made some great friends with whom I stay in touch with now.

It's easy to say someone was rude. I've always believed the old saying: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." If you don't respect local customs, you're likely going to receive a nasty reply. Do your homework, before traveling. ❤✝

I find that not talking, until spoken to by the locals, or you genuinely need someone's help, is the best way to get around overseas. No one is ever rude to a "fly on the wall." Also, if you're in Italy, never eat alone. Italians get offended if you don't risk a heart attack every time you dine out for the evening at their restaurants. Italians have notoriously huge appetites. If you're by yourself, they will feed you as if there are FIVE of you, even if they see only one American seated there. And they get offended if you don't finish everything they throw at you. The chefs there literally take it PERSONALLY! lol

I spent some time in China for work. It was the most miserable place ever. I am overweight, so everywhere I went people were laughing at me, calling me names, talking about me. They assume that no Americans can speak their language, so no one even tried to hide their opinions. On top of that, the employees at the company I was working for had zero respect for a woman in my position. Even had a few tell me to just keep my mouth shut because no man there would ever listen to me anyway. It was a horrible experience. The coworker that I traveled with was invited out to dinner every day, taken to tourist destinations and guided through town. I was not invited to go anywhere or have dinner with any family.

I’m American and lived in different parts of England over the course of a couple years, and British people were brutal to me all the time. I know British banter throws off a lot of Americans, but I thought it was pretty funny a lot of the time and could appreciate it for the unique kind humor it is. When people were rude to me, it wasn’t banter. I got screamed at several times, sworn at often, called every rude name under the sun, rocks thrown at me by young people, and someone threw their coffee all over me. Granted, I was a religious missionary and I think they’re treated more harshly than an average tourist would be, but still, I thought that level of disrespect and cruelty was unbelievable. That being said, I met some lovely people that I appreciate so much and still stay in touch with. Every country will be a mixed bag of nice and rude people.

I once served on a jury with a woman who was originally from Russia. She was one of the people I ate lunch with, so I got to know her pretty well. One day in the jury room, she asked a question that was perceived as rude by some of the other jurors. Later at lunch she asked us if what she'd said was indeed rude and we told her that we knew her well enough to understand her good intent, but that yes, it was rude. She asked how she could have phrased her question more politely and we gave her some suggestions. She explained that in Russia, they just say what they mean without thinking about being nice and respectful. A few years ago, I spent a few days in Russia and found most people to be nice, but we did have one tour guide who made some disparaging comments about people from some other countries/cultures. I didn't appreciate that. I assume she probably says similar things about Americans when we're not there to hear her.

I've been blessed to have done quite a bit of International travel in life. When I was 20yrs old, I went to England and Scotland with my sister & B-I-L. They sponsored a group of Senior High Schoolers that they taught. I have several funny stories from that trip, but here's one. We visited Westminster Abbey and I with another girl saw a young clergyman talking with tourists. We went over to engage him in conversation. He was very nice, with a beautiful smile. He told us of his Church duties, but ended with "I'm a virgin as well." We were a bit stunned he would say this, and I said "pardon me?" He repeated it unabashedly "I'm a virgin as well." What do you say to that? My friend and I turned bright red, said something like "Congratulations " and returned to my sister. We apparently were looking confused because my sister said "Is something wrong?" We told her what the clergyman had said to us. She was quiet for a bit, then burst out laughing. She said "No, he didn't tell you he was a virgin... He is a Virger. That's the title of the British clergy !! Language barriers can turn something innocent Into something rude !!

I guess it just depends on where you go and who you run across. Everyone told us that people in Paris would be rude. Oh course when we went there we got lost. We were afraid to ask for help. We obviously looked lost. Several people came up to us to help. We got a lot of tips on where to go to experience the "real" Paris. We had a great time. The only thing was that several people couldn't understand why so many Americans didn't speak a language besides English. When I was at school we could choose between language classes or the arts. I always took "the arts." I was also told that everyone speaks English. Wish I'd known that wasn't true when I was younger. I've traveled to a lot places as I've gotten older. I find it helps to find out where you shouldn't go as an outsider before you get there. Every state or country seems to have them. Also it helps to be familiar with local customs. The older french prople went out of their way to be rude but the younger people were very kind. Once we got out of the big city it was wonderful. When we got back to London we visited this one pub whose patrons wanted to buy the yanks pints all night.

I can understand how the Turkish made the list, especially if you just stick to the 'Tourist' Areas. The Shop Keepers will actually Physically pull people into their Shops, and if you leave without buying anything, you might get Yelled at. I even saw one Guy get a shoe thrown at him when he left a shop after haggling over prices for something for about 5 minutes and then decided not to buy the item. What’s amazing about the islands around the United States as well as Mexico and South America is that their economy depends SO much on the tourists, so they treat you like gold when you visit. Sometimes, way too good and it almost makes you feel uncomfortable, like they don’t need to wait on you so much as if they’re servants. So make sure you tip them well because their livelihood comes from entertaining guests from around the world and the hospitality business is everything!!!

All I know is when I waited tables there were two groups of people the waiters/waitresses would fight to NOT Serve, that was the Brits AND Germans. They both were notorious for never leaving tips. This was a world class restaurant in America. I get the whole different culture. But I would try to adapt to the culture in another country. Whether you agree or not American food is cheaper in Restaurants because waiters live on tips not an actual wage. But so many foreigners forget that or think you dont have to tip. You are basically making the person work for free and taking up their time and not giving them their wage. Its like having an electrician coming to your house fixing the problem and not paying them.

The problem with the Chinese is most of them who were raised in China can’t read or write English let alone speak it at all so they are completely completely confused on what to do. Plus if people leave China for any reason they usually are working or visiting family elsewhere. If Chinese look like they have something on their mind it’s likely they are doing something right that second and can’t be bothered at all. I’m actually one myself but I was raised American and don’t share the getting too into work or something that takes up too much time in the day. I took to the lazing about for a while.

I'm surprised about the United States' ranking, because almost every video I've seen about visiting the U.S. talks about how super friendly people are to the point of foreigners suspecting that Americans are fake or they're being friendly just because a server/waiter wants a tip. The places in the U.S. this guy was pointing out to not visit are crime ridden -- not rude! Higher crime areas are not rude. They are crime ridden. Rude is not responding to a question or dismissing someone unceremoniously. It's not about lifting your wallet or doing you bodily harm. That's crime, not rudeness.

One wonders whether the vast portion of the USA rating refers to Manhattan, NY alone. Regarding the decades-old characteristic of the rude New Yorker, it was recently explained to me that it isn't so much rudeness as it is New Yorkers having no time for anything and particularly no time for interruptions on the street. They have subways to catch and long distances to walk. It was explained to me that if one stops in the middle of a sidewalk or stands blocking passage on said sidewalk, New Yorkers will cut them cold! On the other hand, I saw a man-on-the-street KZbin made to test this stereotype where the creator dropped a wallet to see who would stop, point out his "accident" and return the wallet to him; most people did the nice thing. And, I mentioned Manhattan because one goes to other boroughs such as Brooklyn and Queens and meet sweet, kindly people.

@@rchrisutoob There's something to that. I don't live in New York City, but I grew up in and around another big city, Philadelphia, and I currently live in Washington, DC. Now, DC is not comparable to NYC in many ways. It's definitely not as populated by a long shot, doesn't have skyscrapers, has wider boulevards with a lot of gov't buildings, but what *is* comparable is that when locals are trying to get to work or an appointment but have to share escalators and Metrorail platforms with tourists, we lose our patience fast when we're trying to move swiftly through the transit system. Stand to the right; Walk on the left is an often stated mantra here regarding escalator protocol. In fact, it's probably best for tourists to wait until after rush hour to make their way to the museums and other sites. But, this is old advice. Since most of us are adjusting to new ways of working, not as many are going into an actual office five days a week, so maybe we won't be so "rude". ;-)

I heard the French are so rude that there's a syndrome that Japanese tourists who go to Paris experience when confronted by the reality of the rudeness they experience. They often picture Paris as if it was the film "Amelie." Not a good start. So, they get the culture shock of a lifetime, and they go into either a state of catatonia or have a heart attack. Japanese people are probably the nicest, most polite, most soft-spoken people on the planet (next to some Canadians), and that level of disrespect is unheard of in their culture.

We don’t try to be rude, but we tend to be very casual, we don’t like excessive customs and laws, we value honesty, and convenience. We have been brought up to think anything we want to do or have we can. America always pushes limits, which has its benefits. A note about tourists visiting the US, if you kinda hangout around tourist areas you'll have an amazing time and people will be more than helpful, small town America is a little different because we don't have chain stores or anything, everyone knows each other and is super polite and no offense to anyone else, but when you come to small town America if your bring any kinda attitude people will be very short with you. If you come in, smile, are quick, people are gonna be nicer and may even buy you a meal. For real, I've bought a handful of people food from our local store. The owner escaped Iran with his family in the 80s and they make amazing American Iranian fusion food. It's been on food network a few times. It's literally the only store and gas station...and restaurant in or whole town... it's actually the only business lol. We don't even have a main street. It's just an exit off the highway in the Cascade Mountains. Also, that "southern hospitality" and the southern lingo, not the accents, are a rural American thing, not Southern. Rural America is pretty much a culture in itself. Like I said in my previous comment though we are a nation of immigrants so it's like a microcosm of world travel in a way. There's always first and second generation immigrants from everywhere....everywhere. Like who would expect to find Iranians in the middle of a mountain range on the west coast of the US? So you not only have to know "typical" American rules of politeness but also know who you're interacting with, like where they're from. Most will be just fine though. Also in my experience the East Coast, like New York tend to be more short with people because they have so many immigrants that they just assume you should know how to act. The West Coast is generally a bit more chill.

France - I suggest get out of Paris and you find the most friendly and helpful. Sorry, the French in Paris vs the rest of the country is like night and day. (Just my opinion). IN the US: all coasts will have beach and bike paths. There some boardwalks that will allow bike riding only certain hours of the day. If you find yourself on busy paths, always keep to the right if you are slower... No law just more understanding.

Not gonna lie... I've never been to France but I have been to several parts of Canada and I have to say that the French speaking parts of the country that I've visited, have most definitely been the least welcoming to tourists. There's an air of superiority about the people who live in those areas and it really doesn't seem to matter how polite you try to be to them. If anything, they tend to perceive polite people as even more offensive. They'll pretend that they don't speak/understand English just so they don't have to interact with foreigners and will just turn up their noses or laugh right in your face for politely asking for directions. It's rather unnerving and makes you just want to ask them what the heck you've ever done to them to make them treat you with such disdain. This isn't a one time experience either. We've been to Canada MANY times over the years and we definitely prefer the areas where the vast majority of people speak English. Obviously, there are some exceptions to every situation and I want to add that I'm sorry to any French Canadians who are part of that exception. 😊
