The reason that Americans don't do beans and toast as well as Britain is because no one eats beans and toast in America.

The real reason is because we actually use spices from around the world, meanwhile britain literally invaded 80% of the world looking for spices, but would still rather eat toast and beans.

We don't get the right kind of beans here in the USA. British Heinz Beanz with the teal label are canned in a tomato sauce and are sweeter than American baked beans like Bush's. With good toast, the beans and some cheese on top it's good.

I was in the UK recently and I didn't find the pricing to be better. I may pay 5% more in the US for a meal, but I'm going to take home most of it and get three meals out of it. Yes, we can get KFC buckets with 16 pieces. I'd buy the larger bucket in the US if I had 8 people to feed. 6 piece if I had 3 people to feed. Which makes the chicken more expensive if I had to buy 3 smaller buckets to feed 8 people. As far as washing chicken, the UK isn't better because it keeps the processing areas cleaner. The UK doesn't have to deal with endemic salmonella in chicken the way the US does. It's not the processing plants being cleaner, it's the chicken itself that is 80% infected in the US long before it even gets to the processing plant.

Remember they may give better or larger portions. But people will take those home and eat them over several meals instead of just one getting more for their money.

This may surprise you but I invite you to check. The Heinz company of Pittsburgh expanded to Britain around 1898 and tailored their canned bean product to British taste and marketed it through Fortnum a Mason even hiring door to door sales people.During one sales campaign Heinz wanted to push sales higher so they published a recipe idea- put them on toast. This really took off during the wars when beans weren’t rationed Americans don’t do Beans on Toast - but, we convinced you to - to sell more of our beans. You’re quite welcome ❤

Many, if not most, of the conclusions in the documentary "Supersize Me" have been refuted. In particular auteur Spurlock refused to release his food intake records, or divulge that the liver damage he suffered might have been due to his excessive alcohol consumption. We lived in england when i was small, in the mid-50s. I remember going to an outdoor market with my mother in the town we lived in. I can see to this day dead, plucked chickens, not gutted, hung by their feet with flies teeming around the bodies and the heads of the chickens swollen to the size of baseballs. My mother said one of the women there told her the reason americans were so unhealthy was because we ate our meats too fresh. I'm 74 now and can still see those chickens hanging up, and the sound of buzzing flies.

Okay, I am glad I stopped drinking Mountain Dew long ago! Geez! Our portions sizes are ridiculously huge, we find it better to share our portions with each other. we save money that way. Eating out in a restaurant where you get waited on would be far better than eating out in a chain fast food restaurant I think, at least you have a choice to choose a healthy meal in a restaurant than at a chain fast food place. Here at home if we do eat out in a restaurant, we eat at our local family-owned restaurants. (Shamelessly suggesting you do need to try In n' Out Burgers just once while you are visiting) Organic food options can be found in our many supermarkets and specialty markets here in CA, organic products can be found in Vons, Albertsons, Ralphs, Stater Brothers, Aldi, Grocery Outlet, Trader Joe's, just to name some that I have seen in these stores, I may have missed some as those supermarkets I listed are in the city I live in. Peace. ☮💕

I agree with the criticism regarding the use of artificial colors, sweeteners and preservatives in prepackaged, prepared foods in the US. I opt for the products made without these, they are commonly marketed with the word 'Simply' on the label. Also note that most water in the US is chlorinated. Chlorine us used to decontaminate the water so ot is safe for drinking. I don't know of the meat industry uses higher levels of chlorine for their meat but the claim by critics seems to be misleading. But then we come back to choice. People in the US aren't limited by a couple of different brands or options, we choose to buy highly processed foods or we can choose to buy fresh, local and organic. We can also choose to grow, raise, hunt, fish and forage (a lifestyle gaining popularity) for our food. We aren't limited as many in other countries are. There's plenty of room for criticism for sure when it comes to convenience foods but these aren't the only options available.

When you come to the US and try American food, my advice is to not try and Britishify things like some UK reactors do, in other words try it American style, and don't do something like putting clotted cream and jam on biscuits, though jam or jelly on biscuits is ok to do, it is most often done in conjunction with butter in the US. Speaking of butter don't put in on sandwiches in the US if you want to have an authentic experience, in the US we will butter plain bread, or toast, but generally not if we are making sandwiches.

We don't eat as much fast food as you think. Just because it is available does not mean we all eat it. All of the restaurants are a novelty to you but normal for us. We grew up with these chains (many are regional, and we don't have access to them). We drive by, go home, and cook dinner just like you do. Fast food is not only unhealthy but also extremely expensive. As a teenager in the 1980s, I was addicted to Big Macs. I haven't been to McDonald's in over 10 years. That's "I'm too busy/tired to bother making anything good." This is why U.S. ingredient lists sound like they contain many "harmful" things. The references that the documentary uses, like Democracynow!, tend to have views that swing leftward. Congrats to UK on some better food safety! Here in U.S. one has to go to great expense and efforts to find meat, produce, baked goods, and so on that are not full of harmful additives and being produced harmfully. Tiny amounts of additives are NOT required by FDA to be labeled. Tiny amounts of contaminates from ordinary processes are allowed and not for public to overtly know about. The least to be done in an instant, is to the eliminate harmful food dyes found in candy favored by children! The regulatory Agencies are headed by political appointees. Many go back and forth to corporate (food conglomerate and such) posh jobs. Food production, communications, pharma, are truly overlords of the Fed regulatory Agencies and the Congress, corrupted by campaign contribution and lobbying, over decades. Most famous and failed outcry was try to dis allow 'Nutrasweet/ Aspertame' , first allowed by FDA in 1974.
