When I discovered I had Welsh ancestry (as well as English, Irish, and Scottish) I looked at some of the language. It's like they just grabbed a bunch of left over letters from multiple Scrabble games and then pulled them out of a hat to name things.

It's not just city names, street names will mess you up too. In Pasadena, Tatar is pronounced "Tart-er". North side of Houston is a street called Kuykendahl. It's pronounced "Kirk-en-doll". We seem to add hard "Rs" to names.

Yeah we also have a lot of town and city names that are hard for other ppl outside of wisconsin that r hard to pronounce just because a lot of them are named from native americans tribes and after them too or a word from their language or a sometimes their leader's name. But we also have German and polish places named from their language too i think. I'm polish on both sides cause my last name has ski and that usually is polish but also I learned from my family that my mom and dad's side r both polish mostly with a bit of German in us possibly.

So the perky blonde girl brings them their Banana Split and the man ask her if he can ask her question, she snaps her chewing gum and say in her best Texan accent " Well, ... I gez so, go ahead & ask" So the old guy says " What is the correct pronunciation of this place?" Lol, Mexia has nothing to do with the “native Mexican language”. The place was named after a Mexican general from the 19th century (born before Mexican Independence) and the surname is of Spanish origin, nowadays seen more with a “j” instead of an “x” (Mejía).

I live in a city with a name that is often mispronounced by others. Here in Louisville it's joked about. Our chamber of commerce even had a sign made up with lots of different pronunciations. The farthest away I've been from home is Los Angeles, CA which is over 2,000 miles away and when I was introduced as being from Louisville the first question I was asked was how to pronounce the name of the city. If you watch the Kentucky Derby, college football, or college basketball, you will hear the announcers usually pronounce it the way we natives do, which I admit is kind of weird. The correct prounciation is LOO-EE-VILL, but we say Loo-UH-vull. There are people in the state but out of town who get it closer than those out of state. We can almost tell if you're from some other part of Kentucky or from another state just by the way you say it.

I actually remember listening to a couple of kids in the hall in high school debating whether Louisville or Lexington was the capital. Sad. Beesleys, the reason Gruene is pronounced Green is because it's down near San Antonio, which used to be a big area where Texas German was spoken. Then, along came the world wars where Germany was the bad guys, so it wasn't safe to speak German anymore. "Gruene" is how it's spelled in German, but it translates as 'green'. . . . same story as above, and named after a German city--BROWN-felce. I don't know where the Study came from in "Study Butte", but a butte is a variation of a plateau, and there's a city in Montana with that name.
