I deployed from Bruggen to Bahrain with the first of the Tornado GR1 force on Aug 23rd 1990, there was no desert kit available so we were issued with tropical DPMs, the standing joke at the time was “Trained in Britain, to fight in Europe, kitted out for the jungle and sent to the desert!” I moved to Dhahran at Christmas and spent the war there launching and maintaining our ‘mudmover & recce Tonkas’ till the end. We did get a limited supply of desert DPM lightweights, but as for NBC suit, we just had the plain green mkiv versions.

I was issued 6 green mkiv suits when I deployed.

There is also Navy coloured MK4. Also I believe other camo patterns for different nations

I recall green Mk4 suits being referred to as ‘training suits’ with DPM/Desert versions being retained as ‘war stocks’; sounds plausible.

Weird how the fabric was manufactured before Saddam had even invaded Kuwait

I believe the date relates to the manufacture of the charcoal impregnated cloth, this is the bit for which the date of manufacture and useful lifetime really matters. The camouflage printed cloth is initially separate and essentially forms a thin outer layer over the charcoal cloth when the suit is manufacutred.
