I have learned so much in the past 4 weeks watching this channel. I had bought a "GS" smock, OD green, patterned after your current issue smock, made as a kind of a generic smock, I guess? Back in August. It came from the UK, I was reluctant, but the price was right. At any rate, the smock was made so well and fit so good, I now have four others different British surplus smocks! in camo(s) of course! these are great pieces of kit!

We certainly certainly regressed with our shade of DPM as we went through the 80s and 90s. The earlier lighter shade was certainly a lot more versatile

My first 2 x Combat Suits were 84 patt in the 60/68 patt colouring. the darker DPM was an evolutionary change.

The lighter, early DPM was far superior in open areas, later DPM was way to dark! Loved wearing my DPM Junglies.. Best fitting smartest uniform we ever produced..even if it was a bit...melty..

Hail DPM! You served us well, my favourite has the tiny dots on the trailing ends of the “splotch patterns”. Having a fade is bolo. The video’s editing is in the style of the subject camouflage.

I had been led to understand the change to darker pigments in Brit DPM colouration during the 80's was a result of improving it's anti-infra red signature, as well as the differences in cloth/pigment saturation.
@RiflemanMoore3 жыл бұрын
This was possibly an additional change in the '80s, the change from cotton to cotton modal occured in the mid to late '70s with the corresponding change in the darkness/saturation of the DPM print.

There are quite a few color variations between British manufactures in the 80’s and 90’s..some is very dull almost like the Dutch DPM. I have an 84 pattern Jacket which is very Olive in color. I have what appears to be a trial smock Soldier 2000. Which is very like New Zealand in colour pattern.

Check out the Russian "Kukla" camo, which is essentially DPM pattern, and comes in a variety of colours

That first combat jacket was very rare, I only saw one once., with that collar it's a very early DPM jacket. When we joined in 1977, the DPM was darker on most jackets, but some of the other recruits had lighter and they weren't new. I had to exchange a KF shirt in 1978, the colour was usually a light green, but the clothing storeman gave me a khaki shirt, as a joke I think. Anyway I liked it and it was a softer material, held on to it for years.

DPM the dark colours were reversed in the Canadian pattern from the British DPM was the Canadian Airborne Regiment Jump Smock which i have 2 of one early and one later the patterns changed slightly...The camo was also used by the Tanzanian military purchased through contract from Peerless. Which is where the CAR DPM originated and was adpted by the CAR . But i digress...There was a trial version of CAR DPM tested but it was issued to the RCMP for a short time ..Canada also had another camo that was called "paint by numbers" came out in the 90's known as the Garrison Smock it was short lived
@DavidYoung-je8mf6 ай бұрын
I thought the Tanzanian uniforms were from the camo trials and were not reverse DPM like the Para Smocks. I have pictures showing these being worn in the Tanzanian border clashes. Also, the smock shown here is the last version (as noted in a post above) where the pattern was enlarged and had a mustard hue.
@johnsteele29863 жыл бұрын
The Canadian Para Smocks had two distinct colour schemes, yours is an Ambridge and Thompson manufacture which had a very curry colour to the base tan. The earlier ones made by Peerless were more subdued and closer to original DPM. If memory serves me didn't the Canadian DPM reverse the colours for the green and brown shapes?

One thing you should try and get hold of is the Kiwi issue DPM Swandri it was really impractical (the Size it was huge) but at the same time really practical (IE: warm even when wet) it was awesome to use but would take up way too much room in the pack and you couldn’t compact it at all but made a really good pillow if you did bring it along. It had a big hood which was also great in wet and windy conditions very popular with Civilian Kiwi hunters but has become as rare as hens teeth
@cuhurun3 жыл бұрын
Was it made the same traditional way as other Swanies, with natural wool ?
@zaynevanday1423 жыл бұрын
@@cuhurun yes it was a true blue Kiwi Swandri just made in DPM with pockets normal Swannies didn't have made specifically for the NZDF I cant say if the Navy and the RNZAF had them but the Army most certainly did

@@zaynevanday142 : That's great, I'd love one ! By the way, I still have my old Swanie which I bought from a thrift shop in Blenheim... blue and black check, but a button-up shirt as opposed to the classic smock style. I did hear Swandry went out of business a while back. If so, it's a bloody tragedy.

Great vid. A couple of weeks ago i made a similar picture of my collection - 3 generations of tropicals and junglies plus windproofs + 90's Rip Stops. That NZ Smock in "Action Man" patten looks basicaly like the british P68 "Mustard" variation. I have a whole set of British P68 mustard tropicals. I don't know to this day when P68 turned from the "green" to "mustard" ... or maybe it was the other way. But it kind of resembles ERDLs variations in highland and lowland ERDLs. I also made a picture of British Tropicals vs ERDLs and Woodland. Anyways. That late 80s NZ shirt pattern was called "bananas" as it turned very yellowish in the tropical sun. I've seen pictures from peacekeeping missions in the late 80's / early 90's where it's just ridiculosly yellow. LOL Canadian pattern seems soo cool! Modern NZ mid 90's DPM looks a lot like the British Airtex DPM Junglies.

Thanks! Though I'm American, the darker Temperate DPM is my favorite pattern. I have a Gore-Tex shell parka, with no pockets and hood in collar that I really like for cool, rainy weather. It has an army info tag, that unfortunately is badly faded so all I can read is the garment size. Does this ring a bell as to what it was called in the British Army?

If you make another video, would you be willing to show comparisons? It'd be interesting to see if the shapes on the New Zealand hood and the British 1960 pattern smock are the same. Dutch DPM is most similar to the DPM on early British 1984 pattern uniforms. The later British 1984 pattern uniforms usually have a scaled down DPM as on your smock.
