In this video we test the effectiveness of British Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM) in a heavily vegetated woodland environment. DPM had a very long service life with the British military, and was only recently replaced in the last few years by the new Multi-Terrain Pattern that is similar to MultiCam. Like American woodland copies of the pattern were adopted by militaries all over the world and has truly set a standard for camouflage for the past few decades. This video includes scenes that show the patterns use when both concealed with and without the use of vegetation in the environment, as well as what the pattern looks like moving and stationary.

As I am in the UK, the DPM pattern is my standard camo, when out and about in the woods. I did notice you a few times when hidden as your hat has straight edges, an olive green British Army scrim scarf over the hat and down the sides of your head may have worked to break up the straight edge outline of the hat. Nice video. It takes me back to the 1980's when I was wearing DPM and carrying an SLR for a living.

@LRK20 its not lighter, the tan is darker and the brown is lighter, however original early pattern British DPM had the lighter brown, CS95 or more modern DPM is darker to start with and works best when it fades a bit as is designed as old DPM used to fade to being too light, so now it fades to the perfect level. However the dutch darker tan is still wrong to original DPM and in my opinion works less well.

The difference between the sun hitting the pattern or it being dark is massive. I found when in sunlight it was really effective, but when theres no light hitting it it turns really dark. Big European pine forest and oak forests is where DPM and Flecktarn really work well.

Hi Brent, thank you for a very effective video. I wore DPM as a Sapper through out the 1980's. I only missed you once but with fresh DPM it is it's darkness that gives you away. Once it is aged and bleached out a bit it works much better. Also you would not just rely on the Camo. You integrate the local vegetation into your kit to break up your colour and shape. I compared this vid to your MTP vid and it has helped to answer many questions. REspect

@@Brent0331 Brent, do you have any idea how DPM would work in the Southeast USA? We're pretty much subtropical out here on the coast, with a couple of the islands nearby being near-tropical in terms of foliage (and we've doubled for Vietnam in at least one movie). I want to combine DPM clothes with a multicam plate carrier/chest rig and backpack but I'm concerned about it sticking out like a sore thumb compared to US woodland or even MC Tropic.

As a kid who grew up in the boarder counties of Northern Ireland this brought back memories. Two come to mind. One was the bush at the end of our farm lane that looked exactly like a soldier squatting by the roadside. Spent about a year doing a double take every time I looked in that direction. The other was driving a tractor as a teenager (around 1984 or 85) and almost swerving of the road when I glimpsed a pair of eyes looking out of the hedge. Just to clarify the squaddie wasn’t behind the hedge, he had just lent back into it but was basically invisible. 2LI as I remember, their band had done a performance at our school a couple of weeks before.

Great to see someone do a video on effectiveness of DPM. As many have noted, most effective in hardwood forests as found in Europe. I have been wearing a DPM SAS smock for over 20 years, though prefer US woodland BDU trousers. Not an exact match but close enough. Have seen pictures of British and Dutch Marines with same combination. Vietnam ERDL still my all time favourite, have a couple sets of originals in my collection.

@@hanburgundy4317 When I looked at the effectiveness videos of Reeltree camo gear I spotted them rather quickly in general. I think they lack in disrupting the shape and I think the material Reeltree used reflects sunlight far too much, but they are probably good enough for hunting animals and they do look rather nice. I think Flecktarn, Cadpat, Multicam but especially Desert All Over Brush (I still don't know why the US Army didn't select DAOB over UCP in the early 2000s) are a step in the right direction. They combine both macro and micro to give the wearer long as well as close range concealment capability.

@@koolyman It depends on what gear you buy, what pattern, and where you're hunting. Here in northern Indiana, anything from Redhead is quality material and Realtree's AP, XTRA, EDGE, or that new Hidd'n pattern (I think my buddy got it from Tractor Supply) work phenomenally. If it's a dry, crispy leaf kind of day, I'd go with Realtree - XTRA or EDGE - but if everything is wet, then the pattern is too tan; then, I go with Hidd'n, as it has a darker color tone that matches those wet leaves. I've had both deer and people come within feet of me without noticing me, so I swear by the stuff lol CADPAT is amazing - I wouldn't suggest any pattern over it for a greened-out environment, but I'd try XTRA Green around here; works great in maple woods. And, really, if you want to go full bushman, a 3D leaf suit is the best way to go; a company called Arcturus partnered with Realtree to make some phenomenal leaf suits, but their own patterns looks great, too. I'd say my favorite "military" patterns aren't even military but Kryptec; those patterns work great.

Another great entertaining video as usual, DPM had an even longer service life than US woodland and it outlasted it as well. DPM entered British military service around 1967 I believe and it was finally phased out in 2010. Where as US woodland didn't come along until 1981 and it was phased out between 2003-2006, they'ry both pretty effective depending on the type of area you're in.

A must have ! I prefer the old "tropical" DPM with lighter colors sometimes. In my opinion it's more effective on a shiny day of summer than the latest DPM like you're using in this video. A cheap yet effective and comfortable uniform. My favorite combination is a DPM shirt/smock with Belgian "jigsaw" /"flecktarn" pants (plus they are dirt cheap now over here, like 10€ max for the whole belgian flecktarn uniform at your size+the smock vest). The green-ish DPM for the vegetation/trees as a shirt and the darker/more brown pattern of the jig or fleck to fit the ground. The MTP is a big joke imo, they just wanted to save some money and they chose a camo "that could fit anywhere", wish is impossible obviously ... Great video as usual.

I think the UK military should have kept the Soldier 2000 Woodland DPM Pattern instead of transitioning completely to MTP. This is because now I feel British soldiers etc, look the same as the US and other NATO allies. When our forces are on operations now there is hardly anything to distinguish them from the rest! MTP is and was probably best for the Afghanistan terrain, but now they are back in the European theatre of operations, I think our military should revert back into Solider 2000 DPM. Although as always, the permanent squeeze on defence spending this now unfortunately, wishful thinking! Excellent demonstration of how effective Solider 2000 DPM was, Cheers!👍

Never had a use for DPM. As stated it’s better suited for piney, darker for the cloudy Weather pattern of England and European forests. Rhodesian Brushstroke is still the king. I love how several here think this isn’t thick wooded terrain. Part of it looks like the Crosstimbers. An ancient eco/geographic region with trees 200-400 years old. It’s unique to North Texas all the way running thick through Central and Northeast Oklahoma and thinning out in Southern Kansas. It’s an interesting Geographic area. Where Eastern Forests and wildlife mix with Western Forests and wildlife. Legendary American Writer, Washington Irving wrote about it in one of his books about exploring Indian Territory, particularly the area West of Tulsa, which is thick, thick forest with rolling, steep and Hilly terrain mixed with rock formations thrown in randomly to further complicate things. To quote Washington Irving: “I shall not easily forget the mortal toil, and the vexations of flesh and spirit, that we underwent occasionally, in our wanderings through the Cross-Timber. It was struggling through forests of cast iron.” The More You Know…..

My vote goes to tropical jungle DPM and even the really old-school 68 patter, though ironically, I think German Flecktarn works best in Britain. I don't know if DPM is in wide circulation in the States, but here in the UK it's the easiest and cheapest thing to get hold of, though some of the old patterns can be a little more expensive sometimes.

@@lancerd4934 All of those conflicts you list are pre-1967 , the year in which DPM was introduced, except for Oman, the Falklands, and NI. DPM was better in NI and the Falklands than MTP would have been. Officially the UK wasn't in Oman 1971-6, it was so secret that the Labour Party didn't find out about it until they won the election in 1974. Only 500 British troops max were involved in Oman and most were SAS. They didn't wear DPM but tended to mix & match faded old Denison smocks and lightweights/ old jungle trousers, worn with locally purchased shemaghs. For tropical environments troops wore plain green tropical kit until 1970 when tropical DPM, which was different tones to regular DPM, was introduced. Desert DPM was introduced in the late 80s and used in Op Granby (1st Gulf War). The bulk of the British Army was based in W. Germany until the end of the Cold War and had it kicked off there most of the rest of the regulars as well as T.A. would have been sent to reinforce them so. For this reason and the fact that there were different designs of camo, multi-theatre camo was not needed, and it is thought by many that the transition to this was just to cut costs. The Dutch Army which introduced their version of DPM - almost identical to the British - in 1990 has been planning to supercede it with a type of MTP since 2008, it was supposed to be rolled out in 2021, now their Ministry of Defence says it's expected to be rolled out in 2023.

NZ Army used the british style DPM right up until last year, and it was effective in close and open country environments, however any enemy with IR, NVG or FLIR would see you stick out a mile away. DPM uniforms were also very inconsistent in terms of brightness and pattern, and they were also extremely cold and uncomfortable.
@weichen5046
@weichen5046 10 жыл бұрын
The NZ version of DPM was not exactly the same as British, although it looks very similar at a glance and is clearly modeled after it. NZ DPM had an extra mid/golden brown streak through it, and lacks some of the "speckled" edge areas of some issues of British DPM (soldier 2000?). NZ DPM is also a bit inconsistent in it's colour variety from batch to batch. The quality of material and construction was also poor compared to Soldier95/2000. I didn't realise they recently changed uniform, I have been out of the country for a while. I can't keep up, ANOTHER set of camo I will have to get!

Well, TF currently wear DPM (except for me) whereas all RF are now in the new MCU, which is actually unique. Looks much brighter and "grey"er than even the US ACU's, but is a much more functional uniform I believe. DPM's were excellent for whatever specific environment they were patterned for, but were uncomfortabe, cold and required a lot of maintenance. And you are correct, NZ DPM's are quite incosistent, just look at the wet weathers. Some people have ones that are brighter than a para-flare, and other ones look like they've been soaked and washed in mud no matter how much you clean and iron them.

I've watched a few "tests" of DPM (and other patterns), and it seems to me that all suffer from the same basic error. With direct bright sunlight, any background that is lit by the sunlight will reveal the silhouette of the person, unless the pattern is also in direct sunlight. You could probably be wearing pink, orange or black, maybe even white (also grey, khaki or olive drab), and the silhouette would be the same. Either make sure the background is more shady, or get more sunlight on the pattern. Testing in twilight and/or heavy overcast would probably also help. For bright lighting conditions, patterns with lower constrast and more lightness, like MTP or even the ancient Italian Tele Mimetico would probably be better. Has anyone ever made a comparison of Tele Mimetico and MTP/MultiCam?

Brand spanking new my friend. Everything is new but nothing matches exactly color for color lol. The boonie I picked up on ebay and was mailed from the UK and its green is a little bit brighter than the smock I have. The Smock I picked up from Sportsmansguide.com which was advertised as used British surplus but the thing was brand new when I got it. The trousers I had to buy reproduction from RAP4.com, it can be hard sometimes finding XL clothing imported to the U.S. from Europe. The reproductions trousers are a tab bit duller than the smock but that’s about it.

Agreed, it didnt help that the pattern got even darker when soaked in rain which is basically every other day in the UK. I was issued MTP in my last year and whilst it may not be as good in dense green vegetation, it is far more flexible and works in a greater number of environments than DPM yet keeps the familiar pattern.

Good effort but many of the tests on KZbin seem to me to suffer from the same flaw. You can't demonstrate the effectiveness of disruptive patterns by hiding behind something. In this video you can see at the start that as soon as the subject reveals himself he is plain to see, in fact even at a modest distance the colours and pattern of the material are not distinguishable and there is no disruptive effect, he is effectively a silhouette. There is no doubt that in direct light appropriately coloured material for a particular environment helps a stationary figure stand out less and thus perhaps remain unnoticed for longer but it seems to me that 'camouflage' uniforms are not anything as effective on their own as many people like to believe. Nice colours and patterns though, and interesting if flawed thinking.

@Brent0331
@Brent0331 10 жыл бұрын
If you’re looking for a rig that can accommodate both AR or AK mags, I really like the one I wear in most of my videos. Reason being I’m frequently shooting AR’s, AKs, and .308 rifles like the M1A, or FAL. This rig’s pouches are big enough to carry all of those different types of magazines. They do not make the rig I have anymore but you can still buy the one it was based off of which is the Blackhawk commando chest rig: www.ebay.com/itm/BLACKHAWK-COMMANDO-CHEST-HARNESS-DESERT-TAN-/221365355068?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338a67423c A lot of people like the open top pouches with the bungee style retaining bands, those are fine too. I just think that this type of set up suits me best for my needs, and I like having the extra security of having my magazines completely enclosed inside a pouch.
