In this video we test the effectiveness of British Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP) in a heavily vegetated woodland environment. By watching this video you should get a good idea on how the pattern preforms in this type of environment while both stationary and moving.

I'm impressed at how effective British MTP is, surprising considering that it's color scheme virtually the same as US multicam and yet it outperfomed it. In my opinion MTP was way more effective than multicam and my favorite thing about it is that it was effective at every distance it didn't black blob. Great job man keep up the good work.

If I understand, it was a pattern started in the US then adapted by the British. There's a fine history of that sort of thing happening in both directions.

@@noshame7472 Multicam has some limitations, but what are you talking about it needs to be "moved on"? The UK did a great job by doing it right with no nonsense when it came to change camo from DPM to MTP, they spent money wisely and changed to something that works. Meanwhile the US kept changing camo, adopting different camo for different services, and then changed its mind and partially went back to sharing camo across services, each time they did that they spent more money. MTP will not work perfectly in all environments, however it works well enough that it won't need updating to a new camo for a long while yet, there are way more important things to spend money on in the MoD right now like new frigates, new nuclear deterrent submarines, new aerial and underwater drones, a replacement or fix for the new Ajax vehicles, and potentially a new self propelled howitzer. Just changing camo for something better every few years does not provide adequate improvements for the cost of replacement, it just doesn't make sense.

@@G1NZOU Hi No worries I understand what you mean and agree. But when have you ever seen the Army keep something that works? The industrial military supply machine is already looking at phasing out MTP/OCP as well with a date to do this, Sorry. You know and I know that contracts take priority over real time 'what might work', we are looking at moving back into the digital realm again, as my sources tell me in the MOD and aboard? Just look at the stock market spec's and the jigsaw puzzle this is? MTP/OCP was only made to replace another contract as it will happen again in a few years time. Sorry man that's life? Not sure what they got but a different type of UCP will be coming as in digital or something not sure.

I love your videos. Funny how staying away from bright colors and just being still is perhaps the best camouflage. I know that a deer standing still is hard to detect even though it is a solid brown animal. As a hunter, I've noticed that movement or lack there of is the most effective way of being undetected; however, blending in is a crucial element. I appreciate your videos and think you are doing a great job. Please keep up the good work.

When this was first issued I had my doubts, but I now think its better than Woodland DPM. Woodland DPM is too dark. I still think Desert DPM in a desert setting was very very effective, and in that environment maybe the best camouflage I've seen. I dont think the MTP fills that need so well.

***** I saw British troops in Iraq back in 2003 and 2004 in Desert DPM and it looked like a very effective pattern. I'll say down in those areas we were in where it was primarily desert, MTP definitely wouldn't have been a better option. However, when I was in southern Afghanistan there were areas that were literally lush with vegetation like Vietnam and then there were areas as dry and open as the deserts of Iraq all within miles of each other. In that scenario I think the utility of having a pattern like MTP definitely is the way to go.

Definitely, DPM works great in a thick dark forest, or jungle, but everywhere else the MTP tends to outperform it, and with thick foliage you can somewhat counteract MTP's disadvantage by using extra brush and branches to camouflage yourself, out in the open where you'll be relying on your camo exclusively in the absence of concealment I'd rather have MTP.

There was the lighter jungle variant of DPM in the past, though they seemed to have phased that out come cs95. I guess by then we had a smaller, less active army post cold-war. @@justdoit4834 Not quite true, the UK approached Crye with the idea that since MultiCam performed well overall in testing, they wanted a Brit variant which still showed the British forces identity up close with the DPM pattern elements, so co-developed MTP. Same reason Australian MultiCam is a MultiCam variant but with BunnyCam shaped elements to it and an altered colouration to match Australian environmental colours, camo uniforms are triple purpose, firstly they blend and conceal, secondly once you're actually spotted by an enemy they break up your outline to give you a split second before the enemy's brain realises they're looking at a human target, thirdly once you're up close and spotted by friendly allies they can look at your uniform which identifies you as belonging to a certain branch/country. If everyone used MultiCam there'd be too much confusion and possibly friendly fire if the enemy also used it, so variations in pattern for recognition are a good thing.

I respectfully disagree, they are both more similar to Flecktarn not in the colors as Flecktarn is darker but in the shape of the colored sections of the pattern. DPM and Woodland have much bigger sections in the pattern. I like them both, they work good in VA in summer but not so much in the fall where Flecktarn is better. One thing about the actual uniforms The british ones are way better quality and more functional and they also have a lightweight version which is great in a hot sticky VA summer and a standard version whick is equivalent to the US Multicam. I've used the US issue and Propper and Tru-Spec and none of them are as good as the PCS issue MTP.

@Dimitri Dragunov I think you misunderstood the "i.e" I wrote. "i.e" is the equivalent of the word "meaning". So what I was saying is "they should start developing active camo for personnel", I wasn't referencing myself for sure 😏 For the time being, there is apparently an alternative from a company called UF-PRO especially their uniform of multiple IR spetrum invisibility, have a look: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqe3Y4emqdqknNk ... It sure looks very nice but the commercial video neglects the surrounding terrain temperature which would make any moving shape with different temperature stand out in thermal scopes/imagers. Also check their website ufpro.com and scroll down a bit for MC/Flecktarn/Concamo side by side pictures. But if you want to see real adaptive camo check the *amazing* 👍👍 stuff from Canadian company Hyperstealth www.hyperstealth.com/ ... I was checking them since many years ago but their multi-spectrum light bending tech "Quantum Stealth" is top secret and wasn't shown to the public. But now (after losing a large contract with a bureaucratic US Military who apparently dropped invisible uniforms project [www.hyperstealth.com/Quantum-Stealth/index.html .. news updates down page] and after registering their patents) they have plenty of videos on the website explaining their tech. Videos are taken in office environment using panels of the classified "Quantum Stealth" version, but imagine those portable light bending panels being used in a jungle scenario! That is some actual "PREDATOR" movie kinda stuff, would be too awesome to watch! 😲 They also have great uniform/vehicle/buildings camo patterns, check them out. Have you done a video on the smock? I was issued an M65 field jacket and gortex jackets which both are great in different ways. The SAS smock the commonwealth-ers use seems to bridge the gap pretty well. I picked mine up in Dallas and it appears to be genuine, non-Chicom made kit.

I use this type of camo for wildlife photography and it blends in much better than Woodland or DPM. Especially because animals see different colors than humans the tans and browns blend you in very good.

We spoke before about Scandinavian camo. I just got a Swedish M90 set and compared it size wise with my MTP windproof. The Swedish 190 is a little bit smaller than my 180 MTP, the 180 M90 pants fit me perfectly. I Am glad that I had a chance to try before buy. As with the German surplus snow suit, the 190 was a better fit but the arms are a little short. I am 178 but I do like a long sleeve that doesn't ride up the arms whilst firing. I hope this helps.

@Brent0331
@Brent0331 10 жыл бұрын
For these really lush environments like mine I would look into some of the modern military patterns like MARPAT, CADPAT, ATACS FG, or if you’re looking to save a buck and still have an effective pattern look at some of the older surplus patterns like Woodland, Tiger, DPM, Flecktarn, etc. I like MultiCam and MTP but if I was looking at just one particular environment and didn’t need the versatility that those two patterns offer, I would go with a environment specific pattern.

This seemed to work a lot better in the Multi-Cam did in your Part 1 Review - which is odd given there similarity. Do you think that is down to the differing pattern - or do you think that you just did a slightly better job in hiding when testing the British Multi-Terrain?
@Brent0331
@Brent0331 7 жыл бұрын
Its hard to say man, I can tell you that the Multicam PART 1 video was filmed very earlier on when I started doing these videos. With that said in those days I did a lot more filming of scenes where I didn't have any natural vegetation interfering with the uniform to help break up the outline. I started changing it up a little bit after that video in which I have more of a mixture of scenes where the degree of exposure of the uniform to the viewer varies more.

I'd like this pattern but colored like OCP. I don't know if it would be as versatile but in this environment, it would work very well IMO. Also, it wonder why they changed the pattern to be like a hybrid of DPM and multicam. VS using the sharper DPM pattern which I feel is more disruptive. I have a MTP combat shirt but, need to pick up some DPM also.

Cheers. I was reluctant to get this camouflage as I do alot of wildlife watching on Salisbury Plain and don't want to look like a Walter. However, thanks to you and other on KZbin I brought one as the camouflage is brilliant for the Somerset Levels and the Forest of Dean. Just have a question about the cut of the jacket. Has this been copied by other militaries? I "hunt with a camera" I love the way that I can keep photography kit, 2 x 300ml Lifeventure mug/flasks in it (any idiot can be uncomfortable!), snacks and an Israeli dressing. I also love the hand warmer pockets. I pair mine up with my Alpkit thermal jacket in cold weather. Costs about 30 quid, if faded I rinse it in olive green dye then reproof in Nikwax and lets me get close to my photography targets.

I'm going to be one of the dissenters about the effectiveness of MTP after seeing this video. It just seems too light. While others have commented about it not going black at a distance, it seems to me that it goes white. In most scenes, my eye was drawn to where you were before you moved because it was the light spot. It might work better later in the summer when the foliage gets that more faded out look pre-fall.

Depends on what you need it for. The ECWCS gortex top is water proof, I think the parka is just water resistant. The two are really nothing a like, I would compare the parka more to a old M65 field jacket (but lighter). The parka is a lot quieter than a gortex top too.

As I have posted on your previous DPM video. The MTP kits looks too light for a UK environment . I saw you several times before you moved towards the camera. My neighbour who also likes going into the woods and practising Bushcraft prefers the MTP, but I prefer DPM, especially as my jacket/trousers are now well worn in and faded a little to take away any sharp shapes/colours. To me it looks like the UK Government went the way of combining camouflage patterns, so they didn't have to issue separate kit for UK /European woodland and Desert use.

The MTP pattern was specifically designed for Afghanistan. Whilst the desert DPM worked well in arid areas, it didn't work in the lush green irrigated areas. So the research scientists came up with a design that worked well in all areas of Afghanistan.

Have you tried the UBAS (under body armour shirt)? That sweat wicking material is better then most found on the market today, and the latest generation even have camouflage printed in the sweat wicking "shirt" portion, which most UBAS shirt out on the market don't - A big advantage as it allows you to wear it without armour, or not stick out like a sore thumb when you wear a chest rig.
