The closest analogy to the Houses of Parliament is the Capitol Building, which houses the United States Congress.

One secret service protection detail that wowed me, is that when the President is speaking in front of a crowd, and you see a an agent standing close behind him, the agent actually has hold of the President’s belt under his suit jacket! It’s in case they see something dangerous and have to act to move the President out of harm’s way immediately, they can just grab him or throw him out of the way. It sounds so indelicate, but if it’s to save your life, I guess you get up there and pretend to be relaxed.

It's happened. When President Obama & family were living in the White House a guy made it all the way to the family wing. There were a lot of suspicious things that happened to President Obama, like the mentally unstable guy with a gun, who rode the hotel elevator with the Pres & secret service. The mentally unstable interpreter at Mr Nelson Mandela's funeral.

@nochannel1q2321 Жыл бұрын
The White House is the equivalent of Buckingham and 10 Downing Street. In the US the President is the head of state (the Queen's role) and the head of government (the PM's role) and the level of security is far in excess of almost any other facility in the world. The only realistic comparatively defended locations would be the official residence and offices of the leader of the PRC and the official primary residence and offices of the President of Russia and even there the spending and features are skewed heavily in much the same way as military spending by the US rates against others in the world.

I was doing construction work in san francisco, and i believe it was president ford that was visiting a building a couple buildings away. Secret service went to all the surrounding buildings and told people not to go on the roof and they couldnt go past a specific point around the building the president was visiting. The best part was seeing a work van with ladders on top park by the building, and having 6 guys in suits and dark glasses come out of the back of the van.

The best defense against poisoners is serving the President a dish picked at random from the lot already prepared in the kitchen...they never serve "this dish is just for the Big Guy". The food ingredients are purchased by Secret Service agents in plain clothes from a list of reputable suppliers that are rotated so nobody knows where or when they will show up, even if the clerks knew they were Secret Service.

I remember touring the White House in early 93 or 94 when Clinton was president. In those days, you could buy tickets and walk in. I saw various rooms like the blue and green room decorated in those colors and the china room with the different commerative plates and sets for each administration. As a young student, I was throughly disappointed because the oval office wasn't part of the tour. Being young, it never occured to me that security was a big issue. Now, if one wants to tour the White House, you have to write your congressional representative and wait for clearance. Thanks for posting this. I never knew about the footpad technology.
@baraxor Жыл бұрын
Before the 1970s, the only way ordinary people could tour the White House was via the Congressional tour ticket system...each member of Congress and Senator get a certain number of tickets for each day the White House is open to visitors (I think it's Tuesday through Saturday, or at least that's what it was back in the day), and these would then be distributed to constituents who asked for them for a certain day, if still available. The tours would be conducted by off-duty Secret Service agents, one group every ten minutes or so. Then they expanded the hours slightly so that in the summer there would be a first-come-first-served general admission tour, where you could line up a ticket booth and obtain your ticket for that day only, again subject to availability. When I first went to Washington as a kid with my family in summer 1972, the line was insanely long, so we didn't even try to get a ticket. After a few years they refined the general admission so that your ticket had a specific time you had to arrive for the tour, which could be several hours later; however, that meant that you could leave the White House area and do your tourist thing in the meantime before coming back for the tour. Then came 9-11. No tours were conducted for a long time, and now once more the Congressional tour is the only one available to the general public. One last thing: as far as I know, White House tour tickets are free. Most countries charge fees for tours of the residences of their head of state, if such a thing is even possible.

They don't just have Secret Service protection for 10 years. I have experience serving both Ladybird Johnson and all of the Bush family at Austin Country Club in the 90s. Former Presidents and First Ladies have Secret Service until they pass away and even though that person is no longer in office if they are scheduled for any type of appearance or if they're just going to the Formal Dining Room at the country club their Secret Service detail comes with them. I always waited on VIPs because I was the Maitre D or Dining Rooms Manager and the Secret Service agents would always talk to me, the Chef and the GM before these guests would be served. I waited on the Bush family when he was still Governor so he didn't have so much security but his dad sure did. And the Bush family were a wonderful, pleasant and fun group to serve. Ladybird was very skittish so I learned to approach her table very carefully not starting with her even though she was the most important person at the table. Also she like half white wine mixed with half water so either the bottle or carafe served at her table was half water and half wine and that's what everyone at her table got. Same thing with coffee. She had to have decaf so just to make sure only decaf was served to her table.

The president is no longer allowed to drive in public once he or she is elected. George Bush (the younger) hates this rule the most. He prefers to stay on his Texas ranch because he is allowed to drive on his own property. The Secret Service places an agent right outside the president's bedroom at all times. No matter where he is. So any romantic time with his wife is overheard by the agent. As for the bathroom, yes, an agent is in the room. I was once in the same room with Bush Jr, Clinton and Obama for public event for 9/11 in NYC. My friend went to use the restroom and he couldn't not go into the room until Clinton as finished. Once the agents saw that Clinton was ready to go back to his seat, they walked him out of the bathroom and reopened the room to everyone else. Presidents get no privacy for the rest of their lives due to secret service protection.
