They basically have to - it's an automatic ejection (or "game misconduct") if you keep the gloves on during a fight (the hard leather and plastic actually makes it worse than a bare-knuckle fight). There are a bunch of rules like that around fighting to try to make it ... well, not "safe", but about as safe as you can reasonably make trying to beat up somebody on a slippery surface while both of you have knives strapped to the bottom of your feet. Similarly: no resuming the fight after the refs have managed to break it up, no leaving the bench during a fight or fighting from the bench, no ganging up on an individual opponent - although the refs are sometimes lenient about the last one if they really obviously deserve it.

Sometimes players agree to fight before the puck drops that's why some of them never go for it beforehand. OMG! I love this so much! Ice hockey is my absolute favorite sport to watch and it's so underrated! Think about the strength, speed, balance, agility, control it takes just to play the game, and then play it on ice! These men are in unbelieveable condition! If they're really good, they'll get drafted at 18 years old and play until they're in their 40s. NHL stands for National Hockey League, and yes, it includes both American and Canadian teams. Hits or "checking" and fighting are part of the game, but there are rules to it and all kinds of penalties. When a team has a player in the penalty box, the other team has an extra player advantage or "power play". So you see, you can't really have hockey without fighting. It's literally part of the game. The players that specialize in fighting or hitting are called "enforcers", and they generally protect or assist their teammates more than intimidate, but frustration has been known to take over. Oh yeah, and being toothless is a typical hockey player stereotype. LOL

I really like watching hockey. To answer some of your questions, this video's hits were pretty mild compared to most seasons due to Covid. If someone were to try to stab another player with their skate, they would face fines, an extremely long ban and possibly jail time. The NHL is comprised of teams from both the US and Canada. Also, many of these fights occur for different reasons. Sometimes its the players policing themselves in the event of a dirty play. Other times, a fight might be instigated by a player trying to motivate his team. One of the most famous fights was back in 1997, when the Detroit Redwings had a big fight with the Colorado Avalanche. The fight occurred because of a dirty hit on a Detroit player the year before, requiring multiple surgeries for the player hit.

There are two major conferences. and there are four divisions. They play for what they called the Stanley Cup! The NHL features the best players from around the world such as Russia, Finland, Dutch, Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden and the Ukraine. And of course players from the USA and Canada. Fighting is allowed to a degree so one for excitement second to allow their aggressions to get out without causing further harm later in a game. And yes they can't use your skates because the skates are shorter sharper and quite frankly more deadly. And the past there have been players who've died. which is why I think we're helmets nowadays. You cannot pull the stick above your waist otherwise it's a 2-minute foul. Fighting can be anywhere from 2 minutes 4 minutes or 5 minutes depending on the severity. the 5-minute foul also includes an ejection from the game. and right now they're not allowing fans in the stadiums due to covid-19 . Maybe they'll resume next year.

Being from the northern Midwest, there is hockey and field hockey (the former being more prevalent), not ice hockey and regular hockey (or did Diane even say "hice hockey"). The goalies are generally trying to prevent a puck to the nut, and also a puck to the goal, sealing off the space between their shin pads and the ice to prevent a low shot from going in. There's an expression "The gloves are off", meaning you're ready to fight. Gordie Howe played professional hockey until age 52, and for a time was a teammate with his two sons. There have been, I think, two instances of a skate blade going to a player's throat and nicking the carotid artery. Both survived, but lost massive amounts of blood.

Greetings from Canada, again, eh! Many a hockey game under my skates, and a few observations on your video. At the beginning, that's Zdano Chara formerly of the Boston Bruins. He's 6'8", he's 43 in this video, he's a freak and he's still playing. Hockey has been trying to clean up the "goons" from the game. It'll never be eliminated, but, thankfully skill or fists is winning out. It's still not uncommon for a player to skate up to an opponent at a face-off and ask "wanna go"? Hockey players ages range most 20-30, over 30 your career is winding down. Your stick must stay below shoulder height, contact with a "high stick" is a 2 minute "minor" penalty. If you draw blood, you get a double minor ( 4 minutes). A fight gets you 5 minutes. There are 4 "officials" on the ice. The two referee's, they wear a red arm band, and two linesmen ( they drop the puck, call the off-sides and they are responsible for breaking up the fights, not the refs) In Canada, it's hockey, not ice hockey, that will boil a Canadians blood when they hear that!!! It's a shame my game is always reduced to it's lowest base, the fights. It's a game of motion, poetry on ice, skill and grace that has been corrupted by cementheads. I hope you can watch hockey and enjoy it for the sport it is, not the cartoon it can become.

This might interest you -- when US and Canadian teams play one another, each national anthem is played at the start of the game, whether it's being played in the US or Canada. Plus, there are Canadians who play for US teams, and vice-versa. Fans in each country sing along to both. There was an instance in Detroit of a sound system failure during the Canadian anthem, so the mostly American crowd really piped up and belted out O Canada. Same deal in Toronto, where the mostly Canadian crowd enthusiastically finished out the Star-Spangled Banner and cheered. In 2014, there was a awful shooting incident in Ottawa at Parliament Hill. Soon afterward, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the the Philadelphia Flyers. Two US teams playing in the US so, normally, only the US anthem would have been played. As a show of love and sympathy for the Canadian people, the Pittsburgh Penguins organization asked a guy to perform O Canada before the game in addition to the US anthem, and the crowd was all about it. See? Americans aren't always d*cks! :) Seriously, though, there is a whole lot of love between Canada and the US. I am a Yank, but I love Canada every bit as much as I love the United States. And if you can't get on with a Canadian, that's a "you" problem.

As a Canadian, I approve of this video. There are presently 31 teams in the National Hockey League (will be 32 as of next fall). I like this because whenever there is a hockey season, I'm an announcer for my local junior level team in Thunder Bay. I should mention that trying to call the play during a game is more difficult than it seems.

Coach Jennings, as a life long recreational hockey player I enjoyed your reaction to our wonderful game. Once a hockey player always a hockey player. My older brother skates here in a league in Michigan and some are 75 years young. Classic Coach Jennings line, "are all these lads. all er .... (sniff sniff) on something" No, but good catch For a non-hockey fan you give some great commentary.

Regarding the on-ice officials, there are two referees and two linesmen. The referees call most of the penalties, and the linesmen call offsides. The other job of the linesmen is to break up fights when one or both players in a fight go down. Referees aren’t supposed to get involved with breaking up fights so they can keep an eye on anything dirty that may go on either in the fight or elsewhere on the ice. It looks like chaos, but there’s actually a whole ritual and unwritten rules to hockey fights.

@dvdraymond3 жыл бұрын
They let them go at it while they're both on their feet, and go to break it up once either fighter gets down on a knee or prone. You're sliding around on ice in a ton of padding and loose jerseys making awkward swings at each other. "Usually" there's not too much damage done, and it gets the aggression out. If they went to break it up immediately it'd just leave them still steamed and itching for round 2 as soon as they got out of the penalty box. If someone's down on the ice it becomes a lot easier for the guy kneeling over them to get a good solid hit in, which is why they break it up then.

You question age of hockey players. Generally hockey players start to go downhill at 30 although many play until mid 30s. Not every game has a fight, but sometimes the other guy just gets on your nerves. Sometimes a player starts a fight to fire up his team as they are playing poorly.

The uniform you recognize in 9:30 is the Montreal Canadiens. They were the original first of 6 hockey teams in the NHL and are over 100 years old. I am not surprised that their team logo is recognized internationally. They are an iconic team. They have the record for the most Stanley Cups at 24 with Toronto Maple Leafs with 14. Unfortuanely the Canadiens have not been doing very well this past decade with their last Stanley Cup won in 1995 or something around that time.

In regards to the gloves, the gloves are in fact armored to protect the hands from sticks and skates. In hockey, it's a gentleman's agreement that if you're going to fight, you "drop the gloves". The gloves can actually do more damage than bare fists.

You wondered how old a player could get: I don't follow hockey, but I do remember the name Wayne Gretzky because he was so well known that you didn't have to follow the game to know the name. He retired after twenty years in the NHL and is considered to be one of the best.

Same, I remember Gretzky and Bobby Orr, don't follow the sport

Gordie Howe was the longest-playing player, and the oldest at retirement, at 52 years of age. It's rare that a player plays past age 40 (even Gretzky retired before then!), though a handful have recently. Jaromir Jagr, Zdeno Chara, Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, and Teemu Selanne come to mind. 3 of those (Chara, Marleau, and Thornton) are active players as of 21-22.

Gretzky retired before he was 40, but he probably owns the highest percentage of records of any player in the four most popular North American sports. Crazy cool stat: He has more assists than any other player has goals and assists COMBINED!
