1. Bread and Butter - meaning: main source of money/ income 2. A bad apple, A bad egg - meaning: a bad influence someone who brings trouble. 3. A couch potato - meaning: a lazy/ idle person 4. A hard nut to crack - meaning: a difficult person to understand or a difficult problem to solve 5. A piece of cake - meaning: very easy to do 6. A smart cookie - meaning: a clever/ intelligent person 7. The big cheese - meaning: an important person (usually a boss/ superior) 8. It doesn’t cut the mustard - meaning: not good enough doesn’t meet the required standard 9. Food for thought - meaning: worth considering and thinking about 10. (to go) pear-shaped - meaning: gone unexpectedly wrong 11. In a nutshell - meaning: simply put to explain things in a simple way 12. (to be) in a pickle - meaning: in trouble/ mess or difficult situation. A (little) pickle - meaning: a naughty/ badly behaved child 13. Chalk and cheese - meaning: opposites, very different (Referring to people) 14. Two peas in a pod - meaning: very similar in personality and character. (Referring to people) 15. It’s not my cup of tea - meaning: not the type of thing I usually like. It’s just my cup of tea - meaning: the type of thing I usually like 16. Selling like hot cakes - meaning: selling quickly & in large quantities (very popular) 17. The apple of my eye - meaning: the person I adore/ love (often referring to your child) 18. The cream of the crop - meaning: the best amongst many 19. The icing on the cake - meaning: something positive that happens in an already very good situation or quite bad that happens in an already very bad situation 20. To be handed something on a (silver) platter - meaning: to acquire something easily, usually without any effort 21. To bring home the bacon - meaning: to earn the income/ money 22. To butter someone up - meaning: to flatter/ charm someone in the hopes of receiving special treatment 23. Don’t cry over spilt milk or there’s no point crying over spilt milk - meaning: don’t get upset over something that has already happened and cannot be changed 24. Eat humble pie - meaning: to apologise and accept humiliation 25. Egg someone on - meaning: to encourage someone to do something foolish 26. Go bananas or 27. Go nuts - meaning: to lose control as a result of being extremely excited/ happy or annoyed/ angry 28. Have a bun in the oven - meaning: to be pregnant 29. To spill the beans - meaning: to reveal (usually secret) information 30. Take it with a pinch of salt - meaning: to accept that a piece of information is probably exaggerated 31. Have your cake and eat it too - meaning: you can’t have something ‘both ways’ you can’t have the best of both worlds 32. Cool as a cucumber - meaning: a relaxed person not stressed by anything

Superb lesson Leila. You have found a perfect rhythm, not too fast, but especially not too slow as could sometimes be in the past. 30 idioms clearly explained in 10 minutes is just great. A lesson to listen and to listen again and again...
