Amazingly spectacular as a ruin, imagine how it was when first built, a great visit you had.

Thanks for the video! We came across Tintern Abbey by accident when driving the countryside and holy cow was it an amazing place. I took a ton of pictures and they don't do the true scale justice.

Capturing the scale was the trickiest problem for us, even with a person in shot you can never truly reveal the impact of it. It looks awesome lit up at night too

@@MostlyCastles I appreciate that. I like your style and format. Something to consider when filming here in Japan. It is hard to get in-depth background information, as most sources are in Japanese. The difference between castles is stark. Much of the ruins here Japan have not survived, as most were made of wood due to earth quakes. But like Wales, they are all over the country. Literally thousands of castle foundations. Japan's history is full of blood and violence.

"In 1675, a half-interest in the ironworks company was purchased by Colonel Lewis Morris, [who obtained a title granting him 3,540 acres (14.3 km2) along the Shrewsbury River]. Morris also obtained land owned by Bartholomew Applegate, who had built a corn mill on the other side of the river. Morris, who procured the land for iron mining, named his holdings "Tintern Manor," after his family lands in Monmouthshire, Great Britain.Tintern Abbey, located in Monmouthshire, Wales, is often accepted as the namesake of Tinton Falls." I grew up and a mile from the old iron works. That build sits above the waterfalls and is an excellent bar and restaurant.

For a moment there I was rather excited about the idea of a bar and restaurant above some waterfalls at Tintern in Wales. Then I realised you were talking about New Jersey. 😀

Given that so much of this structure remains when compared to other ruined abbeys that Henry VIII assaulted, it seems that it would be easy to re-roof and somewhat restore it. Why isn't this done? When the Soviet Union fell, one of the first things that Russians did was to rebuild and restore churches that the communists had pulled down. After WW2 the city of Dresden rebuilt the bombed baroque Frauenkirche, literally from a pile of rubble. In Poland, Malbork Castle, once used by the medieval Teutonic Knights and badly damaged during WW2, was restored. Restoring at least ONE ruined abbey in the UK - or just the church Tintern - would be an affirmation of faith, hope, and the human quest for beauty that made Tintern a reality in the first place. It would also signify the triumph of the human spirit over the kind of destructive insanity that Henry VIII (and later, his son Edward) unleashed in the UK. Abbeys, convents, books, manuscripts, statues, stained glass, carvings, vestments, murals, all were smashed, torn down, stolen, altered, destroyed, or covered up. Bringing Tintern back would not lessen it's value as an historical monument. It would be symbolically righting a wrong.
@MostlyCastles3 жыл бұрын
I can’t speak for the rest of the abbeys and monasteries, but Tintern became part of what was called ‘the picturesque’ movement. People loved it for what is was. It used to be covered with ivy, which possibly added to its charm. Artists drew it and poems were composed about it. We have plenty of intact places of worship in the uk, full of stained glass windows and icons etc. I think the draw for this one is that it’s impressive as it is without all that ornamentation. Its roof arches seem immense as if they were built to frame the skies. It feels like part of the landscape, a homage to nature, and a reminder of former glories. When we visited we heard far more accents and languages in this place than in any other place of worship. If Tintern doesn’t embody the quest for beauty, I don’t know what does. -Jo
