THANK YOU!!! Elvis NEVER claimed to be a guitarist or pianist, but he did use these instruments a lot. He was ultimately a performer (the greatest), but never tried to fake being an instrumentalist or songwriter. I resent people that downplay his talent because he was not those things. Don't forget that Elvis was a formidable rhythm guitarist for years; the first Elvis band was a three-piece, with Elvis on rhythm guitar and vocals, Scotty Moore on lead guitar and the bass player Bill Black - NO DRUMS, so Elvis had to be the rhythm guitarist playing with a strong heavily percussive style to augment the band sound with chords, fills, AND a percussive sound with a very steady beat; that took skill and great timing, and he had to do it while also being The lead vocalist. The later addition of a drummer allowed Elvis Presley to focus more on being the frontman and rely less on playing the guitar extensively on every song for every gig.

I've been an Elvis fan ever since I can remember (even though I wasn't born until after he left this earth). I didn't realize what a great rhythm guitar player he was until I started playing these songs in my early 20s. Just amazing - natural, instinctive. Elvis was a rhythm guitar player. Not highly skilled, but naturally good. His voice, his style, his ear allowed him to make good music. Elvis was actually a master at production. He could listen to that massive band he had in the 70s and hear a bum note. Come on. He wasn't the King for nothing. He was a badass.

This is what fascinates me the most, that he produced almost all of his music himslef, and that is one hell of a job the way Elvis did it, because he always wanted everybody to play together, so to say "live" in the studio, and he didn´t want the instuments to be recorded the isolated way. He even uses the word "great" several times, to describe different aspects of the song (not just the playing). This performance was huge back then and became even more huge a decade later when it was replayed on TV just after he died in 78. I remember being a kid and seeing the replay of this performance and how everyone in the neighborhood where I lived sat home and watched it, and how some stores and businesses in the area actually shut down when this was supposed to come on TV. It was like a huge television event when they replayed this for the first time after his death.

This was fun to hear. Elvis is still impressing us! I sometimes think of all the music he could have been making and so grateful for all his songs and music he has shared for the short time he was around. He's still the bomb! Elvis Presley was a very humble, yet incredible unmatched talent. He never called himself the King but he earned that well deserved title given to him by his fans around the world for lack of a word to give him even higher praise. The man has never been matched in voice or looks. Jerry Lee Lewis tried to convince people that he was the king but he never was given that distinction and rightly so. There was one Elvis and he was a phenomenon.

Long story short...He plays guitar like a Singer/Performer. That doesn't make him a bad guitarist, but rather it isn't his thing. I am a guitarist and the guitar comes first to me. I can also play Bass and Keyboards...but I play Bass and Keyboards like a Guitarist, meaning they are secondary instruments to me and only played out of occasional necessity. Elvis' main instrument is his voice and huge stage presence, those always came first to him. Anything else is secondary.

A close friend friend of mine who is in his 80s told me that he ( my friend) was in a bar in Greensboro, NC in the early 50s...he and his friends were hanging out and this guy pulls up in a car gets out with his guitar and plays a about 45 minutes...it was Elvis

Great analyses Phil. I'm sitting here trying to think of something cool to say about Elvis, and his music. I'm going to give up, because there isn't enough space on the internet to say what needs to be said. I was 7 years old when Elvis, and Scotty, and Bill recorded "Its All Right." Of course Elvis is a good guitarist. That song blew me away then, and still blows me away now. It was simply, to Elvis, a God given talent. What can you say? He was the whole package.

Elvis played guitar on his songs in the 50’s. 2 guitars and a bass. Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Elvis. Tom Parker later discouraged Elvis from playing and wanted him to focus on the singing. Elvis was no Glen Campbell or Mark Knopfler, but he was raised on the guitar and could play piano also. People thinking he pretended are just 100% incorrect. Great video as usual 👍

If Elvis had of just focused on Guitar we would be talking about a different artist that probably would not have had the cultural impact that he had. Long ago I talked to a member of his musical entourage about his music, hove singing, his stage presence, and he said Elvi could play better than he let on, but that he never, ever wanted his music to get in the way of his voice and his stage presence, as, in his opinion, too many singer/musicians did. There are few performers who can just let their natural charisma and their voice do all the work, but Elvis was one of them. His music was there to accompany his voice, not the other way around. There are many very famous band and singers who would be complete failures were it not for the outstanding music that sometimes overrode voices to the point where no one was even sure what was being sung. Not so with Elvis. Funny, but when my wife was only twelve, she got to spend some time in a limo with Elvis Almost fifty years later, I'm STILL trying to live up to the impression he left on her.

One thing that always gets my attention is how Elvis interacted with other musicians and singers. Its obvious how much he enjoyed playing in a group and in informal settings. He shows genuine pleasure and joy with the ability of the other musicians. He was not called The King for nothing but you can tell that it did not alter his awe of the talents of his peers. That is where Elvis found his happiness, making music with his friends.

My mom was an Elvis fanatic & used to take us to the cinema to watch Elvis every day that the movie was playing at the theater. It was a major influence on me seeing this guy singing & playing guitar to the admiration of all the girls & a few jealous guys fuming at Elvis getting all the attention. I thought to myself that this seemed like a very good job to have & my brother & I pestered mum for guitars for Christmas. We got the inexpensive ones with cowboys on them. Then a tsunami called The Beatles performed on Ed Sullivan Show & we just had to get real guitars albeit still inexpensive catalog mail order ones but good enough to begin taking guitar lessons. I can still smell that guitar as I unwrapped it that long ago Christmas morning! I glued some bottle caps on mine so it looked like it had electric guitar control knobs. It's been a life long journey & learning experience because I don't think anyone will ever completely master every way a guitar can be played. It's very good for brain exercise to try to learn a new songs,decipher new chord progressions or create your own music. Elvis has said that he was just a strummer on guitar. I'm so glad that you point out all the good aspects of his playing instead of picking apart his shortcomings on the instrument. Well, Keith Richards himself said in an interview he was amazed that Elvis was so good on rhythm guitar he didn't even need a drummer. It was just Elvis on rhythm, Scotty on lead, and Bill on bass for those early recordings. He isn't in a bunch of halls of fame for nothing.

This really is the beginning of the Elvis's music most know. He got his movie career behind him and focus on who he really was - a gifted singer and performer. James Dean and Marlon Brando were his movie idols and Elvis wanted a meaningful movie career playing that genre as a serious actor. He never got that chance, because he was exploited as a singer. He grew up a lot so he could focus. This concert performance after leaving the movie industry is really who Elvis was and you can tell he is really enjoying himself!!

Elvis was a complete artist, he created his own vocal technique, played piano, guitar, bass and guitar! It will be very difficult to come up with another artist as talented as he is! I noticed a comment from a gentleman that stated that Elvis was smashed on alcohol and pills. And. The gentleman insinuated that that is why he was so good. The funny thing is, Elvis didn't drink. On rare occasions, he might have a peach brandy. Yes. He had an issue with pharmaceuticals, but neither of what he may have taken; simply did not make his natural talent better. He had a God given talent, and no medication made him a better. He didn't care for alcohol. He wasn't perfect, he was a man. An incredible talent, and lets not forget; he had very serious issues with his health. He was also one of the most kind, and gentle souls to have blessed the very long list of human beings to have blessed this world. However, there's never been anyone else that could do what came completely natural to him.

I agree with you. In the beginning it was mostly sleeping pills downers uppers starting from his army days. It slowly got worse after he met Dr. Nick. I believe that was about 1966. Then came Vegas years starting in 1969. All his prescription drug use elevated from there. In 1969 he was still awesome, by 1971 you can hear changes in his vocals and physical appearance accelerating, bloating etc. He got in shape for his Aloha from Hawaii concert. Listen to 1973 Aloha compared to his comeback Special in 1968. A large vocal sound change in a short period of time. I thought Elvis was awesome to about 1973.

What a joyful performance! I'm happy to learn there was no falsity about Elvis' playing and delighted to see him really having fun. This '68 TV special shook off a lot of the oppression of the string of dumb movies he became very unhappy with performing in. Go back and listen to the Sun Session recordings of Elvis all the rhythm guitar playing is Elvis. Also he was 33 in 1968 he started playing at around 9-10 so bout 22-23 years worth of rhythm. His instrument was his voice.

I remember watching this show. It was great and they had so much extra footage, another special consisting of outtakes was aired. Something to know, if we are studying his playing here, is that he was REALLY frustrated that he didn't have a guitar strap. He wanted to stand up because he wanted to rock but also because he was "cooking" in his leather pants! He finally stood and had someone help hold the guitar.

People that have a natural talent can do it without formalization. By the time I was 12 I could do advanced college level algebra without having ever taken formalized training on the topic. I could also set really good running times without ever actually having trained properly. I think he was a better player than he's given credit for.. As mentioned before he played strong rythem on his SUN records. Lots of photos of him in Germany in the Army with an electric guitar. I'm sure there were plenty of jam sessons to learn from. Another interesting story to showcase his ability. I believe it was " baby, I don't care" there's a bass intro that Elvis's bass player Bill Black couldn't get right. He was a custom to the upright bass. The fender bass took some getting use too. Elvis played the bass line that is on the record.

The 68 special was the highest rated show that year. Then it was repeated each Christmas for years. Then VH1 started playing it back to back for weeks. Stop and start it again. I would have it going on all the TV's in my house. As I walked through a room, there would be Elvis. There were times when someone would be at my house and I would catch them stopped in front of a TV, staring. Ha!
