I had the privilege of seeing Glen Campbell perform on his second to last live performance. He was well along with this disease by this time and his daughter was his "guide" as far as the song selection and variety. He had a teleprompter to help him with the song sequence and lyrics and at one point, he started to play the same song again. Ashley (his daughter) had him stop and he laughed and said what his mind forgot, "his fingers still remember" He never missed a note and made no concession to the disease in his playing. He was spot on during the entire show. Amazingly gifted performer and we were blessed to "know" him musically.

My friend, talent is an inherent ability. if you give a guitar to two persons who have never played it, and one starts playing songs the very first time, well, that is raw talent! Glen had years of experience, and what sounds like magic took hard work. In just about all cases of genius, the hard work is overlooked. Having said that, you could say he played magic on his guitar. I think he should be rated on the top along with Roy Clark. He is my favorite. His voice and his ability on Guitar together made such wonderful hits. I have known about him for 46 years. I never forget the first time I saw him on TV, riding a white horse and singing Rhinestone Cowboy. What an entrance! and What an incredible song. Yesterday when I was young, his version along with Roy Clark's are the best, and many have done the song. I cried when he died. What an incredible musician, hard work along with an inherent ability made him such a great singer. May God bless his soul. I have also done some of his songs, but nowhere near his version. Mine was done to amuse myself at home. I may put some of them on KZbin some day. what a loss when he passed away!

When Glenn Campbell was near the end his life, his mind ravaged by Alzheimer's, he could barely remember his name. He could still play guitar. He remembered pieces of music, especially those he had played as a younger man. What a talented human he was... Thank you for helping his memory live on. 🤘🤘🤘💞💞💞

I'm coming at this from a bass player's perspective. Many people--myself included--did not appreciate Glen's one in a million talent because a) we're not guitar players, b) we're not big country music fans and c) we're only familiar with his hits that don't feature his shredding. But after watching this video and Fil's analysis and other musicians who played and recorded with Glen I sure do appreciate him. Part of the problem is that if you're not a guitar player you simply can't know how insanely difficult this level of playing is because he makes it look so easy.

Right after Glen passed, Alice Cooper, one of Glen's closest friends, told a story that Eddie Van Halen asked Alice if he could get a lesson from Glen when he was much younger. Glen inspired me to take up the guitar 50 years ago. Many people don't realize that Glen was a member of the Wrecking Crew before he ever made a hit record. He even identified more as a jazz player than a country player. He was an incredible artist.

One thing I want to add to my previous comment is that some people, very few people, are born with Savant abilities and Glen was one of those. It’s weird and absolutely wonderful. Where does it come from? That gift which brings so much sheer joy to people. It’s amazing that at the end of his Alzheimer’s Battle the one thing he could do was Play The Guitar!!! Glen's talents are similar to MANY musicians at the time. He's basically playing BeBop. And there are hundreds of examples of musicians with this kind of talent. He was a studio musician for many years. He did hundreds and hundreds of recordings, spending an incredible number of hours playing and recording. It is more a testament of what is possible to those who persevere, not some god given talent. And it helps to start young. Charlie Parker, who was at the centre of Bebop, was said to practice up to 16 hours a day. It's called hard work. "It’s amazing that at the end of his Alzheimer’s Battle the one thing he could do was Play The Guitar!!!" This is also a myth. We know that music is found in very deep places of our brains. Those places remain relatively unaffected by Alzheimer's. BTW, I'm not trying to diminish his talent. He was an excellent musician. But the Wrecking Crew was full of good musicians who all got really good at doing something for a lifetime. Go check out Carol Kaye.

The original comment didn't say he had "done something right". He said that Glen was born with "Savant abilities". I disagree. He practiced. I agree that there needs to be some natural affinity for things, but people like Charlie Parker practiced up to 16 hours a day. That's what makes these people great. Glen Campbell spent many years in a recording studio for hours on end. 12, 14, and 16 hour long sessions were not unheard of. Ask Carol Kaye. He spent most of his waking hours PLAYING. There are a whole host of musicians like this. They are called studio musicians. Every city has them. Yes they are good. But they don't just shit talent. There is a lot of work that goes into it. Ask Michael Jordan if he ever practiced or had to put effort into basketball. He'll look at you like you're smoking crack. Go see how modern athletes prepare. Their regimen is insane. The same goes for many musicians. People who aren't musicians don't often get it. I studied music (I'm retired now). You practiced every day. There was no taking time off. And if you wanted to be good, it was a minimum of 4-6 hours a day. Because the guy next to you, who wanted your gig, was doing the same thing...or more.

I've discovered so many great guitar players watching your videos Glen being one of them, I missed out on so many greats and great music in my youth being the narrow minded heavy metal kid, 60s to the 80s was the golden age of music when talent and originality was the driving force behind music not pretty faces. I'm sad that I missed so much back then, but music is timeless and I can still watch them here and buy their music like a kid in a candy store. Thanks Fil.

So good of you Fil to really explain to those who dont play what his skill reflects. Glen said his uncle taught him guitar and woukd tap his left hand pinkie when he didnt use it too. These 16th notes just amaze me. i played probably 5 yrs before i could do that. But to me it is much harder on electric guitar. As you say your mistakes stick out like a rotten apple. He was really versatile in the styles he could play too. As a session musician he recorded all kinds of stuff. You remind of him because you are kind, and humble. Thanks so much, just really enjoy your channel and all your hard work.

I am just in awe of Glen Campbell. When I was about six years old his aunt, who lived in our town and went to our church passed away. I saw Glenn play as a very young teenager. His passion, sincerity and unrivaled talent impacted me so much as a little boy. In the past few years I have fallen in love with his music all over again. I agree with the Merle Haggard quote! You have absolutely nailed your analysis. The enormity of Glen’s guitar musicianship is often overlooked, perhaps because he had so many other talents (perfect pitch, beautiful voice etc) and maybe due to his country genre. Glen was definitely at the very top of world class guitar playing talent. He was second to none, whatever genre or era you choose to compare him against. Hendrix, Van Halen, Clapton, Vai, Santana - choose anyone and you have to put Glen in that company.

I was blessed to see Glen live in his prime, in a venue of about 1500 people. You just can't fully understand his talent without seeing him up close, live. His number one focus for the entire show was connecting with the audience at all times. All guitar playing was automatic for him......and perfect. He mostly played his Fender Strat-plus with lace sensor pickups (midnight burst finish). Prior to the concert, I was privileged to meet him back stage. He was so kind and friendly, just chatting with me like we were neighbors.

I saw him in the mid 70s. I watched his variety show so I was excited about seeing him. His singing and playing and showmanship mesmerized me. I was a huge fan the rest of his life. I listened to his music at least once a week. He was a true master.

Back in the day a certain jazz guitarist/vocalist had a TV variety show. JB would invite other guitarist's on his show and then jam/duel with them at the end. He generally destroyed all the guests....including the likes of Carlos Santana and Jimmy Page, then he had on, one Glen Campbell...the jam was priceless, as Glen not only stayed with him lick for lick {jazz style] then he played some of those country/jazz licks and made Benson sweat bullets. I loved every minute of that. By the way, a personal tip from Glen....as a studio musician he would practice saxophone charts to improve his dexterity.

Glen taped a fund raising special for PBS with our Symphony Orchestra in my city in 2003. His voice and playing were perfect, even though he was 64 at the time. You can find the entire performance on KZbin, and it's pretty impressive, his solo om "Galveston" is very impressive, and is largely improvised. Another amazing player (from a completely different genre) is Allan Holdsworth. His song "Was There" is a perfect showcase for his unique style.

Glen Cambell was an American Genius on guitar ! His talent for timing , use of meter , and choice of notes were supernatural ! The most amazing thing in my mind was all the years he did session work for everybody from Frank Sinatra to the Beach Boys without the ability to read music ! Nice analysis, Fil. I was lucky to work with Glen a few times. I once asked him how he got to be so fluid playing those runs. He said he started practicing when he was very young and would just play those scales every day, over and over. He was totally focused on it. I guess that is what it takes.

Glen was an incredible entertainer. Watched his documentary about his fight with Alzheimer's disease. Eventually he didn't know what day it was, but he could still sing and play his old songs as well as ever. Gone too soon.

Ovatons. Glen mostly played them acoustic & elec. Do you mean the gtr fought him or the corporation⁉️ Ovation made pretty nice instruments on those days. I played a nice 1971 Balladeer for many years. I doubt he was fighting the guitar......✨

Ok. I have always leaned on rock stars as my guitar heroes. However....thanks to Fil and years of watching, I have seen many blues players that are amazing. Glenn......total different level. A lot of rock stars blend and bend out notes and tap. The amount of notes he could hit...not lengthen and stretch. Just clear accurate notes quickly and in sync. Amazing. My friend thinks he is a guitar god lol. To be honest he is very good after twenty five years of playing. I shared this a few minutes ago....he waited and than said, I have no words and I think I need another twenty five years of playing. He is now researching and viewing Glenn’s videos. His last text said....the man is a freak. Thanks Fil.

Glen seriously studied Django Reinhardt's technique for years and he was determined to become the best guitar player in the world. (pg 41 of his autobio) Then he joined up with the Wrecking Crew and the rest is history... His brilliant musicianship was the culmination of natural talent AND hard work, and jazz was what he, rightfully, loved best.

Wichita Lineman is a fascinating piece from a musical perspective. It seems to start in "F", then goes to "D" and never really resolves, which fits so well with the lyrics. Jimmy Webb literally sent it to him in the studio while they were waiting to finish an album. He said, it's not finished, but here's what I've got. Glem improvising that iconic solo bridge is so proof that less is more.

I love that Ovation hollow body electric. You don't see many. When I was a kid in the 70's I SO wanted an Ovation round back acoustic. They were/are a unique guitar.

This is the only video of Glen where it appeared as though he was actually concentrating while he played! lol I had heard at one point that he actually enjoyed and wanted to play jazz, but he needed to make a living so he took a more commercial route. What a natural talent!

I played golf with him a couple of times in the early 2000s… Just a really nice guy who had a great sense of humor and was very self-deprecating. And a really good golfer too!

I never gave Glen Campbell the credit he deserved as a musician because I wasn’t that much into country music so didn’t follow his career. I thought he was only a nice singer. I have now come to realize, after he is gone, what an absolute genius he was. I have to give you credit in being able to articulate exactly what it was he was doing that made him so special. I would have merely said, “Yup, he was amazing!”

@@jearly5859 Roy did love Glen's playing and equally liked to pick with him but...in the end it gave him fits!! On one occasion when Roy was guest hosting the Tonite Show he had Glen on as a guest. Glen did some otherworldly guitar solo on the song he was performing. When he went to sit down for his interview after thundering applause Roy looked at him not smiling one bit and said "I didn't know you were going to play the guitar tonight!"

Glad the camera actually focused closely on much of the solo. So many times in older videos of bands anyway, as soon as the guitar player starts his solo, the camera guy zooms in on the drummer's face or something lol! I'm like...ARRGGGHHHHH!!! 😭
