Talking about pedal steel and Telecaster playing- here's a guy who excels at both. Al Perkins joined the Flying Burrito Bros- he has been in Shiloh- a Texas band that had a certain Don Henley on drums and played on their swansong album- the live "Last of the Red Hot Burritos". Since then- in the early 1970s he has played with bands that include the Rolling Stones and many other headline names Manassas ( Stephen Stills & Chris Hillman) Emmylou Harris and Mike Nesmith . He is a self-effacing guy and I have seen him twice- both times with Chris Hillman on dobro and Hillman said that Al was the best player on the bandstand. He's really amazing and did those great duets- with James Burton on the Telecaster- Al Perkins on the pedal steel on the two Gram Parsons solo albums. Here he is on Telecaster kzbin.info/www/bejne/gobbgWdtrc53mpY and here on lap steel- also at NAMM: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6Cpf6lqhZhpmcU Playing dobro with Hillman and Bernie Leadon and Jerry Scheff- finishing with a Flatt & Scruggs gospel song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZenZ3dmhsuIZq8

Went to a Gregg Allman concert in Munich at the Tollwood festival a few years ago. Unfortunately Gregg’s gig was last minute cancelled due to his heavy health problems. Most of the people went home deeply disappointed, but I decided to enter the festival tent to have a look at Gregg’s support band, which was Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Never heard about this guy, but from the first tone he blew the audience away (at that time not more than 100 persons). He and his mates played full sped ahead, changend instruments, made the aucience dance to “The March” and most of the other tunes, and when it ended after a full two and a half hour nonstop set a big crowd filled the hall, cheering for more - and they got ist! Fantastic performance, and more than a comfort for the cancellation of Gregg’s concert! Sadly enough Gregg never came back to Europe…

The music of today for the most part has lost its connection to actual instruments. You said it best when you said that the music industry and musicians are separate. While self-admittedly being a "simple guitar player" his songs have been making us laugh and cry since his 1971 debut album, and his current "Tree Of Forgiveness" tour dates are quickly sold out. For anyone who doesn't know of him, "Hello In There" would be a good place to start.

Yes Professor Fil, your opinion on this video is spot on. These folks were definitely speaking the same language as the tune was being created. I call it getting "in the zone." Looks like the audience liked it as well.(What I could see of it.) It reminds me of Eric Clapton's Crossroads festival(s). It is so cool at those shows when at least 7 or more musicians "jam" together on one tune. All ages, legends & those who aspire to be called one as well some day. Most important, they have mutual respect for each other. Plus, they look like they are having a whole lotta fun. It makes me wish I was musically inclined. (Oh Well!) This is getting entirely too HEAVY. Bet I surprised you. Oh heck, I surprised myself! (That IS a wonder!) Hope all is well with you. This is Sandy, THE SOUTHERN LADY FROM THE USA. Sandy Bulla, since you're down South somewhere, you really should get over to Houma Louisiana in October for the free, 3-day Voice of the Wetlands Festival hosted by blues-rock guitarist Tab Benoit. Two stages, a mix of national and regional bands, and daily admission is FREE (the Wetlands foundation gets funded from sales of food and drink). You can even camp there with tents, RVs or whatever ( I think they charge a modest fee for that). The jam sessions are wild and might run until two a.m.....and if you've never seen Tab Benoit play, you really really should! Look online for details.

@@goodun2974 Bless your heart. Thank you so much for the info. I'm in North Carolina, 20 miles South of Greensboro. Randleman is where I hang my hat. That Louisiana "Blow Out" sounds like it could be a "LARGE" time. Don't know if I could make it since it's a bit of a distance. Best way for me to get there would be to fly. I'm not high maintenance but I DO NOT like to camp. The closest thing to "camping" for me would be in a RV. Not necessarily a HUGE one, but not tiny either. You had no idea you would be texting a relative of Goldilocks did you? Any motels fairly close? Bad idea they're probably all booked or the rooms that are still open probably cost out the wa-hoo. @@sandybulla5623 , My wife and I live in Southern New England and so we flew to Louisiana. We stayed in the French Quarter of New Orleans For several days, Then rented a car and drove to Houma which is only about an hour's drive from New Orleans. There are plenty of hotels in motels within 10 or 15 minutes of the campgrounds where they hold the festival common and many of the people in town didn't even seem to know that there was a festival taking place, so it shouldn't be any problem getting a Room if you do decide to go. They had a bit of everything, there was rock, blues, jazz, Cajun and Creole and zydeco, some country fiddlin', and the local School of Rock band played as well. Nearly everybody who played at the festival seems to play 3 instruments. Must be something in the water! Tab Benoit also plays drums, in addition to guitar, and he has a recording studio where some of the other musicians who typically play at the festival have recorded, so there's all kinds of jamming going on well into the wee hours of the night and morning . The Friday Night Guitar Fight jam had a half dozen different guitarists on stage all taking turns! We particularly enjoyed bassist-to-stars Doug Wimbish playing with guitarist Eric McFarland; Jumpin' Johnny Sansone and his band were also excellent, as was the Chubby Carrier Zydeco Swamp Band. I just hope the weather is good for them; when we were there it was unusually cool and dry, like early fall in New England, and we thought it was absolutely perfect weather but the folks who live there were all pulling out their jackets that they hardly ever have to wear!
