William Hampton You ain't lying. I saw him live and it was mind blowing. Players with him were as well. I see bluegrass and country picking prowess as I see the same virtuosity of jazz and classical musicians. I have mad respect this. I play sax,. keyboards, drums and flute, but the guitar and strings I can't figure out. It sucks, but that's why I respect those who can play.

Fill, what a joy your videos are. I love watching your reactions to the American pickers I grew up with. I am especially happy you did this video because I am an old friend of 'Picky Ricky" through my dad (the man on the bass..Jesse Chambers). Btw, this tune was written by Tony Colton, Ray Smith, and Albert Lee (all from Head Hands and Feet, out of England). God bless!

At risk of stating the obvious, when people think the left hand is doing unreal things, the right hand is doing pretty much the same thing in having to hit the same string. Bluegrass musicians are absolutely unbelievable talents..

Phil, just a great analysis here. I’m so impressed that you understand the nature and the challenges of high-level flatpicking. It looks like rickies on a D18. The action is higher and the strings are thicker than on an electric and the string attack has to be way more physical. The acoustic does not have the sustain of an electric so the right hand has to stay busy all the time so consequently eighth and sixteenth notes fly out. When you’re good at this type of playing it’s real accomplishment! Great work on this one Phil!

Great video, as usual, my young doppelgänger! 😝 It's nothing you can use on this channel, as there are no guitar calisthenics involved, but do yourself a favour and check out Guy Clark ("Old Friends" is a good place to start) and the certifiably mad Townes VanZant (go for "Pancho and Lefty"). The playing is good, but the lyrics as sheer bloody poetry. Both artists have made proper rabbit-holes worth a dive into. ✌️

I had the privelige of seeing him twice in concert and meeting him both times. He is an old school entertainer who made a point of signing autographs and taking photos after the show. And better still, the first time we went to see him, the opening act was his protege, a relatively unknown Vince Gill

Wow, you nailed it with your analysis, this is insanely good! Ricky and the band, very impressive! Very interesting to note, I think Ricky has a piezo pickup system in his acoustic guitar and not mic'd at all, unless that old vocal mic is picking his guitar up too...but he seems to be wearing a very early wireless system! possibly the banjo too! Very cool live performance, thanks for presenting this!

Third row center, in a small theater, I saw this incantation of Ricky’s band. Opened by Steve Earl, no less. Someone said this band will melt you face, and that’s an apt description. Like the old Memorex commercials where all the furniture is blown back and your hair is flying. I was fortunate to see a lot of bands back in the day, and they were equal or better than most. Thanks Fil, for your loving appreciation of this musical majesty. Again, you’re spot on with the analysis and dissertation and the band, and the vibe of classic country.

Ricky has a great band. Another band you might check out is New Grass Revival for the 1980s. They are incredible musicians. Sam Bush is the world's greatest mandolin player (He's terrific on fiddle, t00), Bela Fleck who's described as The Man Who Reinvented the Banjo (he turned it into a modern jazz instrument in his band The Flecktones), Pat Flynn who is amazing on guitar and John Cowen who's not only a wonderful bass player, but one of the best male vocalists to ever come out of Nashville. I too am SOooooo happy that at your age Fil, your videos are so inclusive & spot on concerning all genres of music. Ricky Skaggs has always been one of my favs, way back to Buck White & daughters (his wife Sharon is one) & Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. For someone who played on stage w/ Bill Monroe at 6 yrs old, he was & is one of the FEW (like Mark O'Connor) who NAIL anything they take on! Thx for another great insight to the techs of guitar playing, vocals & the entertainment factor. You bring out the playful attitudes of Ricky, Roy Clark & their interactions w/ the audience &/or the camera. I have always thot that was one of most endearing things about Eddie Van Halen, in his videos &/or on stage. It is no act on his part, I;m old & saw them before they hit the big time. Eddie, like Ricky Skaggs & the others, have that ability to make the audience feel like they are playing specifically to that person or audience.

Hi Fil I sure enjoy your insightful and informative reviews. Always very entertaining and great choices. I have a couple of questions. What is that chord he plays in the verse, i think it's the 3rd chord, near "city slicker" in the first verse, quite interesting. Also, is there a momentary key change when he sings "I'm just a country boy, country boy at heart". Thanks Terry
@wingsofpegasus
@wingsofpegasus 4 жыл бұрын
It looks like he just frets the Eb as a single note, not playing a full chord, as the band are supplying the full chords in the background. There's no real change of key there, as we still resolve to G the key of the song ☺

I always loved Ricky's style and between him and Kentucky Thunder (his band), they will leave you breathless with the complexity and speed they can pull this stuff off! ...and make it look like a walk in the park! You're spot on about his technique, and I'm sure it took quite a few years to develop. Even at my best years, I couldn't even come *close* to what Ricky could accomplish on the mandolin (and I've got a pretty good Michael Kelly F5 Legacy). He's still hard at it today, while I'm sort of fading out, due to bone spurs and tendonitis in my left hand.😜 Sure is good to listen to some of these older performances though just to get an idea of how crazy good these guys were/are.😍😉 Thanks Fil, another great review!😁👍

There's no faster pickers than bluegrass players. And Ricky Skags is at the top of the food chain. He's been playing since he was a little kid. And grew up under tutelage of Bill Monroe. If you haven't ever seen Ricky Skaggs and the Kentucky thunder. It's quite a thing to see . The do a bluegrass breakdown that is phenomenal.
