I've heard Paul say that Art was given a producing credit early on so the imbalance in their contributions didn't seem so stark. Fair enough, but I've always thought his delicate, crystalline vocals already played a huge part in bringing Simon's amazing lyrics to life. It's not said enough, but Garfunkel was a great singer with a real depth of feeling that needn't be bolstered by paper tributes.

I was at this show in Central Park. It was just soooo great. The secret recipe for pleasing a large or huge crowd--lots of great songs, all hits (very tough to do) and great musicianship. Their voices blend perfectly; Simon is generally an 'earthy' singer with a pleasant texture. Garfunkel's voice is either strong or gentle and really cuts through regardless of what modality he's in. It doesn't get any better than this and they don't make'em like that anymore. When the video cuts to the people in the crowd you can see that it was largely a 30ish to 20's crowd who were teens or in college or even grammer school when the songs were first out there. So until this concert happened, the songs, firmly set as milestones in the past, but performed ever so perfectly in that moment, gave a generation and a half a huge lesson in (for lack of better words) nostalgia's impact, while we were still quite young. I doubt anybody there ever imagined that they would be seeing this somewhere down the road in their lifetime. It was an unforgettable autumn night in the city with about 500,00 other folks and this pin drop moment is an excellent choice for a review.

I was there, too (age 28 at the time). Magical. Almost didn't go, figuring it'd be a madhouse (which it was); was working late in downtown Manhattan with a friend when it started, and after a few minutes of hearing it on the radio, we looked at each other, said "fuck it," closed up shop and headed to Central Park. I still recall hearing "Slipslidin' Away" drifting through the air as we approached the Great Lawn. You're so right -- an unforgettable autumn night in the city with a half-million people who WERE listening, united in the moment.

It's hard to overstate the cultural significance of The Concert in Central Park. Not only did it reunite the two, but it brought their songs back into public consciousness. I think he is talking about now too, read my post. It seems like it may have been a true prophecy, the vision that was planted in his brain. Part of it was about texting, some about idol worship and I think it tells that people about cancel culture, partly because they don’t want to learn from history.
@katherinem.4414

The vision describes it as us buried in our phones too much in cyberspace, texting too much, buying too much online, and not listening to the words of prophets, so we don’t waste our time on earth. Idol worshipping. Can’t remember what else.
@Historian212
@Historian212 3 жыл бұрын
@@katherinem.4414 It's nice that you can relate to the song, but as for the original: no, no one intuited such things as texting, the internet, personal computer screens, or "cancel culture" then. It was about the hypocrisy of those in power at the time who talked a lot, but said nothing of value or meaning in the face of the problems of poverty, racism, war, and pollution that were ripping the country apart. It's a protest against the BS of people who refused to face what America had become; who drowned out real conversation and attempts at dialogue with BS, with advertising, with lies, etc. "The words of the prophets" refers to the graffiti that covered the subways and tenements of cities like NY, which testified to the misery of people trapped in poverty, and cried out for justice. The importance of the biblical prophets is that they called kings and other leaders to justice, and chastised them for their hypocrisy; they spoke truth to power. That's what Paul Simon was referring to.
@katherinem.4414
@katherinem.4414 3 жыл бұрын
@@Historian212 Who knows?? That is just how I saw it, and one other person did. I do not doubt that people have visions, prophets have proven it, even in detail, because things come true later on. I have heard that young and old men have had visions and dreams of visions, and the scriptures say so. There are also near death experiences. And I hear that women too have some of those. I look for symbolism, because that’s sometimes how the Lord works. He talks in parables because that’s how people understand best. Whether this dream was a real vision or not, I don’t know, but I think that too much of phone and other device use is a form of idol worshipping. I believe that we need to be doing better things once we use our devices for what we need, and how we can communicate with others, or assist them with things they ask for. That is all. Many of us believe differently. I assume that in a way what you said could be true, but it all gets a bit complicated for me to think that way anymore, after my insomnia, sleep apnea and excess stress caused part of my brain problems. I seek for easy and simple to understand, and we have been told by a church leader that the gospel of Jesus Christ is simple, and that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass, just like the helm of a ship, kept guided through the waves, can guide it, no matter how big. I assume that things you say may or may not be true. You are blessed to be able to think through things, and I have lost that ability to a degree. Plus I have been living with family who knows nothing about psychology....so it seems, so we have not had any decent conversations using those abilities, trying to work things out. Not so good for me, I have always liked psychology, but that is what I have had to put up with.

Look out on the audience, this is a moment that transcends time and even the performers themselves. When the audience is so enraptured, they have gone beyond transfixed, they have become part of the performance, part of the experience. I have no doubt that every single person there that night remembers every note, every word and probably still feels the warmth of the breeze on their faces as they think back and smile. Truly brilliant!

What a masterpiece. I was fortunate enough to see them perform twice, both times in Wembley, in the early and mid 1980's. I remember a TV interview with Paul Simon, I think it was with Michael Parkinson back in the late 1970's. He said he'd disappeared, taken a year or so off from performing and recording, in order to improve his guitar playing. He'd taken lessons and spent lots of time improving his technique. I was impressed that at the height of his fame he'd take the time and make the effort to do that. As a writer he's unparalleled, as good as Dylan but less vague and so he's able to connect more easily and with more people. There's only one guitar and two voices here yet sound wise there are no gaps, no empty space, it's something of an auditory miracle. In this particular song I always thought Paul Simon's voice was telling the story from a human level, while Art Garfunkel's vocals, which are more etherial, were giving us the message from a spiritual point of view. This is one of the best of your analysis videos. Thanks so much 😊

Thanks, Fil, for breakin’ it all down in your thoughtful, engaging way. It’s always a pleasure to spend time with you.

To the point about the crowd cheering, they cheered particularly at two points during the song: when the lyric is about seeing "10,000 people maybe more," they were cheering because they were gathered in a huge crowd there. There were actually over 500,000 people gathered in Central Park for that free reunion concert (proceeds from the movie/video and album went to benefit the park) -- a reunion that fans had been hoping for, ever since the two parted in 1970. The second point at which a cheer went up was when the lyric mentioned the "subway walls," which at that time were filled with graffiti that New Yorkers knew very well. The city had pretty much gone bankrupt in the mid-70s, due to runaway inflation in the U.S. and the Republican president's belligerence toward NYC. The much-beloved park -- as well as the subways and other infrastructure -- had fallen into disrepair. So New Yorkers identified with the subways and tenements, especially because they knew that Simon and Garfunkel had both grown up in the city, so they're hometown guys who also love it. So while there are definitely performance nuances, situational factors played a part in the crowd's response, too. BTW my brother was there that night. For us, S&G's music evokes a particularly intense moment in time that all comes back when we hear it. Nice research you did on the history of S&G and that song. It's great that the lyrics are still so relevant today; and, like all great art, can be applied to times and situations other than the original one. But be careful about saying "more relevant." You really can't compare the two times like that. It was very relevant in the 60s, because it addressed the hypocrisy of people who *were* speaking verbally, but weren't saying anything worth hearing, because of social conventions, or because they were trying to avoid the important issues of the day (poverty, racism, war, pollution, etc). Of course those are still issues today (alas), but part of the reason the song became so popular at the time was that people were crying out for justice -- "the words of the prophets" -- and were being ignored, or drowned out by BS. And that was the sound of silence. Thanks for featuring this song and performance. I enjoy your videos, you really dig into the details. BTW I love Art Garfunkel's solo work, too, he's done some beautiful songs.

This song performance, the great Central Park Reunion concert, hearkens back to the original recording. Just two part harmony and guitar. The 'hit' version had percussion and electric guitars added later, much to Paul's consternation. Rhymin' Simon lyrics at his best. Their early stuff was all about social observation, isolation. miscommunication and loneliness. Paul or Art, not sure which, talked about sitting around practicing two part vocals while looking at each other mouths, just to nail it right. Paul was enamored by the Everly Brothers impeccable two part harmonies and tried to recreate it. Paul, a natural lefty, broke his left hand and had to re-learn guitar fingering. VERY under-rated guitarist. Paul has been writing songs and changing with times and taste for 50+ years and succeeding where many other people have failed. (Many don't know that 'Red Rubber Ball', a big hit for the Cyrcle, was co-written by Paul while in England). These guys are my favorite duo of all time. In case you can't tell. lol Rock on Fil!
