The mood of the song totally betrays the words of denial. Its dreamy quality captures the mental fog of someone who is totally in the grip of love. And the seductive hushed tones of “Big boys don’t cry” is his subconscious mind reliving a moment of intense passion from the night before. Not in love? Don’t believe it for second, he’s totally under her spell.

These four guys were monster talents! The lead singer and co-writer of this song, Eric Stewart, went on to write and record three albums with Paul McCartney. Graham Gouldman, the other co-writer of "I'm Not in Love" with Stewart, was a hit maker in his own right, penning both "For Your Love" and "Heart Full of Soul" for the Yardbirds, "Bus Stop" and "Look Through Any Window" for The Hollies, as well as songs for Herman's Hermits and many others like Wayne Fontana and Jeff Beck. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, the other two members of 10cc, were no slouches. After 10cc, Godley & Creme became award winning video producers and directors creating videos for The Police ("Every Breath You Take" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger"), Duran Duran ("Girls on Film" and "A View to a Kill"), Culture Club ("Victims"), Herbie Hancock ("Rockit"), Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush ("Don't Give Up"), Frankie Goes to Hollywood ("Two Tribes", "The Power of Love"), Sting ("If You Love Somebody Set Them Free", "Fields of Gold"), George Harrison ("When We Was Fab"), Lou Reed ("No Money Down"), Wang Chung ("Everybody Have Fun Tonight"), Yes ("Leave It"), and The Beatles ("Real Love"), among many many others.

Coolest part is the lyrics of denying the hurt. Then the multi track voices are sort of the dreamscape of not accepting reality. Very cerebral. Eric Stewart has a McCartney vibe about him.

10cc is one of those forgotten bands of my childhood I was just in the fourth grade when this song came out and I just had an old transistor radio and I love the song but later in life when I was able to buy a nice stereo and played this then I realized how dynamic and incredibly wide and deep this song really is production wise. I feel the Brits appreciate this band WAY more than we do in the US. 10cc is just a genius band that needs so much more recognition. Four crazily talented musicians. Even after the massive loss of Kevin and Lol in the mid-70's, Eric and Graham were able to soldier on with amazing results. I'm not a piano player, but that chord the Eric hits at the end of "oooh, you'll wait a long time for me, oooh you'll wait along time".....just hits like a ton of bricks. Any idea on that chord Fil?

Oh gosh Fil I absolutely love this song. In fact, every time I hear it, I go back to my teenage years, laying in my back yard on a hot summer day slathered up to get a sun tan (that's what we did back then). This song is on the radio. I was 14 when this song came out. All these years later I still remember how the sound grabbed me. I did not know how they did it, but I knew that what I was hearing was the work of a musical genius. At the time, at age 14, I had been singing in choirs for several years, taking piano lessons for several years, and was playing trombone. This song, with the voices as primary instruments, laid the groundwork for singing both blues and Barbershop, both of which require the ability to tune chords with the voice; deliberately singing off key the correct amount to bring chords to life. Hearing the angels sing (resultant notes way up in the Gods) bring a thrill second to none.

You've got four guys with a vast experience in writing music and performance. Eric Stewart who was part of the band called Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders. Graham Gouldman who wrote songs for The Mindbenders (Pamela, Pamela), The Hollies (Bus Stop, Look Through Any Window), Herman's Hermits (Listen People, East West, No Milk Today), The Yardbirds (For Your Love, Heart Full of Soul, Evil Hearted You), Jeff Beck (Tallyman). Gouldman was in a group named the Mockingbirds and wrote the song for the band "You Stole My Love" that has a really nice guitar riff. Kevin Godley was part of the band The Mockingbirds with Gouldman. Lol Creme and Kevin Godley formed their band after 10cc. The song "I'm Not In Love" played constantly on the radio waves here on Long Island, NY when it came out. What a song it is. It was so different from what was played from other artists. The song peaked at No. 2 here in the US and in the UK at No. 1. It doesn't surprise me of the success these four musicians achieved with the song. Thank you for the analyses on an incredible band and this particular song that was a huge commercial success.

Thanks so much for your top notch appraisal of this song! You have picked up a lot of really salient stuff here! I always loved the song. When it came out, I was in my mid teens. I had never heard anything like it before. The lyrics and production just knocked me out. Years later I found out way more about it, and you are quite right.....to get a ' studio type' production live is not easy, to hit notes spot on ( without earpieces in those days!) and to synchronise with a backing track just with the low moog drum beat can't have been easy. Now you can do so much digitally, but when this was made, it was a labour of love( and very dedicated musicians!). Makes me appreciate it even more! Thanks!😊

A couple of things about this song and group. at 15:02 into Fil's analysis video, the song sounds so much like Hall and Oates' "She's Gone" . Secondly, 10CC was a great sounding group and one of their songs has always been in my top 100 songs of all time----- Gotta Have More Love---- Fil, you should analyze that one too!

Ahh, it’s so good to hear this song again….it took me back to my teenage love-angst years beautifully.😅. Your video, as well as, an 11-minute video on “The Story of ‘I’m Not In Love’ by 10cc” came up at the same time, and I watched the one about the band first. It giving background about the studio that was started and how the band came together and made the songs they did. Very interesting stuff, and together with your video, gave me a good understanding of how clever and innovative was this method of production. Your video also gave me insight into how difficult this would be to play live, matching that thick, rich, ethereal sound with live vocals and instruments, without popping out over the mix. And, because of their talent, they were able to do it. It’s shocking to hear how little money they made, and it was a shame to hear (in the other video) that they broke up not long after this song had its day. Thanks, Fil, for this video (and your viewers for suggesting it). You play and sing wonderfully, while demonstrating your knowledge of “the making of the songs”.👏🤩

To me, 10cc are an illustration of how the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. That's not to take away from any of the individuals in the band who were all talented, but when you compare the amazing creativity of the four of them together to the music they made with Wax/Godley & Creme afterwards, it's amazing how much they lost from the separation. Godley and Creme were still adventurous with their production, as well as with the new medium of video and Wax still wrote catchy pop songs, but none of it was on the same level as when they were together in 10cc. They also seemed to lose their appetite for incorporating different genres and blending genres in their songs, sticking to more bland pop songs.
