Stevie Winwood has to be on every list. One of the most talented musicians of any time period! Someone please tell me what is he not a master at. Singing, songwriting, keyboards, guitar, and more! I actually put him on my list recently. Top musician who came out of the sixties! I was at Woodstock in Saugerties NY. I think 94 or 95. Traffic stole the whole Festival. It was pure magic. If you don't believe me. You can find their whole set on you tube. You can really see the pure genius of Stevie Winwood! You can also ask Eric Clapton his opinion. I honor you Stevie Winwood! Thank You ( Great Review)

My oldest son went to live in heaven in 2008. On December 22nd he would have been 39.. anyway I always wanted him to play rocknroll like you do fil...His name is James Benjamin Miles..he was born with heart disease and spinal disease..was a very happy person..although the he didn't show pain..we all knew he was always in pain..not anymore....that's why I like seeing you sing and play your music. With feeling. I'm sure your family is so proud of you...I am to....keep on playing and I'll keep watching..your so talented and gorgeous..never forget God loves you always

Steve Winwood has always been one of my favorite all around musicians since he started out in the 60's. I saw him perform live with Traffic twice, first time in 1968 in Central Park, then again in 1970 at the Fillmore East, and he performed this song

Wonderful analysis, Fil. When Steve and Jim Capaldi reformed Traffic back in 1994, I caught the show and they opened the show with this. No fanfare, no wild lights and arena announcer, just Steve walking up to the microphone with his guitar and singing. Jim soon joined him to sing harmony vocals and flautist Randall Bramblett joined shortly thereafter. A haunting, simple and beautiful performance to kick off a spectacular night of music. You brought me back to a wonderful time in my life, so thanks again, sir!

Really cool you picked Stevie Winwood. I saw him play on August 28th 2014, here in Montreal, opening for Tom Petty. He was absolutely on his game. Unbelievable. I was truly blown away and I've seen well over 2500 live shows. I have been doing a radio show since 1990 and have been playing music in bands since '83. I don't use the word unbelievable often and it takes a lot for me to be blown away. He played songs from The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind faith, I was downright shocked by his performance. He played guitar on Traffic's Mr.Fantasy and Blind faith's Can't Find My Way Home(way better and different than any Clapton version, I shit you not.) and a few others. His voice and piano/keyboard playing were also on point and delicious. He played: I'm a Man (The Spencer Davis Group song) Them Changes (Buddy Miles cover) Can't Find My Way Home (Blind Faith song) Medicated Goo (Traffic song) The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (Traffic song) Empty Pages (Traffic song) Higher Love Dear Mr. Fantasy (Traffic song) Gimme Some Lovin' (The Spencer Davis Group song) So glad i went to that show. Tom Petty and his band had to really bring it to not be overshadowed by their opener....they did. One of the best live show I have ever seen.

Strange how Steve is never in any best of rock singers lists by the music press, his voice is still one of the most recognised in world music, great analysis as always Fil, another recommendation from me is a band described as the best bar band in the world by the American music press Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes with their cover of ' Walk Away Renee' , you won't be disappointed, keep safe and cheerio from Glasgow.

I was a major Traffic fan from Day One. Steve has one of the best and most distinctive singing voices ever. I was fortunate enough to see/hear Traffic at the legendary Middle Earth in London in Spring of '68. Dave Mason had already left the band by this time. Stood ten feet away while Steve played Dear Mr Fantasy on piano, then jumped up and grabbed his guitar to play that beautiful lead part. Unforgettable. Those Middle Earth shows started at midnight, no alcohol served, of course, but everybody was high. I saw Jeff Beck (Rod on vocals) there, also Tyrannosaurus Rex (when it was just Marc Bolan and a guy I think playing the bongos, both sitting down on the stage) and finally, last but not least, Captain Beefheart! The Captain was heavily pitched by John Peel on the radio. Those were great days, I was in England (I'll always love England) for my junior year abroad from my college in the US. Thanks Fil, as usual, for your interesting analysis. I always say rock and roll started in the US, and England saved it.

Steve Winwood is an incredible genius. I was fortunate to have been born in a time when I could experience music directly beginning in the 60s. I love The Spencer Davis Group. Was lucky to have lived in San Francisco from 1967-1982. Saw Traffic at the Fillmore & The Winter land in 1968, Blind Faith in Portland in 1969 and Steve Winwood in Bend Oregon in 2008. Please more Steve Winwood through all the years. One suggestion; how about a review of some "older obscure" groups...Crow "Evil Woman", The Music Machine "Talk, Talk" & Python Lee Jackson "In A Broken Dream"...etc. Thank you Fil, you are The Best!

Thanks for this video, Fil. I have seen the performance video many many times. I can't say enough good things about Steve Winwood. I think of his voice as an important voice of the 60s. It's really good to see Steve Winwood still getting the recognition he so richly deserves (if not more so!). I have to admit I didn't like his 1980s period but, then again, there was very little music that I did like in the 80s. In any case, even musicians (genius musicians, even) do have to eat. My first exposure to "John Barleycorn Must Die" was on a Transatlantic sampler vinyl album, which I bought in 1972 or 73. The performers are a group by the name of The Young Tradition. Their version is, in fact, very traditional in nature - a cappella and (it appears) complete with hand behind one ear and a clothes peg on each nose (very Steeleye Span!). The Traffic's version also featured some very tasteful flute playing, which is not particularly missed here, though, as SW does it all so well on his own. Apart from the great singing and guitar playing, by Steve, I find that remembering all of the words and how the verses are sequenced is a job in itself. I always get it wrong when I sing JBMD in the shower. Perhaps I should draw a process flow diagram, because that's what this song is - a description of the agricultural cycle - from planting all the way through to enjoying the fruits of everyone's labours. Python fans may be put in mind of "The Ronettes Sing Medieval Agronomy" Cheers!

Great analysis Fil - as usual! You may already know this. Steve Winwood grew up in Great Barr, Birmingham. I am sure I read somewhere that he was allowed to play the church organ at his local church at 14 years of age and he carried Christine McVie's books home from school (She was Christine Perfect back then and her dad was a vicar ?) Apparently, there is a "Walk of Fame" in Birmingham - on Broad Street (maybe). Some famous Brummie/Midland inductees who have "stars" on the "Walk" include Noddy Holder (Slade), Jeff Lynne (The Move, ELO), Ozzy Osbourne & Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) and various others (?). So why isn't Steve Winwood's name been added? I am sure you would agree he has earned it! Saying that though, I reckon Steve would be too modest to be part of something like that! Anyway, Steve is one of the finest musicians to come from the U.K. and he's made excellent music for many years. Let's hope he keeps going as long as he can. Thanks again Fil. Stay safe.

Phil!! Love your stuff man. I'm 65 and thoroughly enjoy your spotlight on these great classic artists. Can you do a special about the great bands and their proximity to historic UK cities? Most of the great prog bands (except for the Moody Blues and ELP) lived in our near Cambridge? The center of the Universe for wonderful choral music and the Anglican ethos. Most of the R&R centered bands came from "blue-collar" Manchester? And Liverpool was the gateway for the skiffle-to-rock evolution, right? American soldiers brought their early rock albums by Elvis, Bill Haley, Ike Turner, Chuck Berry, etc. and that kicked off the Animals, Beatles, Stones, etc. If there is a book that breaks down the genre and related UK cities that would be awesome. Or maybe a Phil the rock polymath will do a show about it! Best regards!

Hmmm. I think I would be an audience member for this song (big hands) Listening to Steve Winwood's guitar has always been so soothing to the soul, well at least his more recent work. Fil's guitar sounded so very nice. I was certain that there would be some description about some different tuning on Steve's guitar (it does sound unique) but no it was just that 7th fret capo, and Steve Winwood. Thanks Fil

Winwood, gracious, talented and humble. Three words most famous musicians cannot claim. Search "Now the green blade riseth" by him on acoustic guitar. It is appropriate for the coming celebration of Christ's resurrection.

I would suggest Fil does weekly concerts, playing his songs and cover songs. The analysis is getting repetitive, and evolution is needed to survive. I don't mean stop the bread and butter analysis, but everyone loves and respects Fil, so seeing him use his talents would be awesome. I really enjoy seeing his talent with the instruments and he needs to show his ability more, not just highlight others like Windwood. This is only my advice, of course.

I went to see Steve Winwood with Traffic in 1972 live performance at Winterland in San Francisco and the concert cost only $6.00 then and played this song as well Rainmaker and other great songs.

Beautiful picking. I would enjoy an analysis of your favorite (full band) Traffic piece ….I searched and, unless I’m mistaken, you haven’t posted one yet😊. While I’m at it, Shake Your Hand, Let it Ride, or your pick from The Guess Who🎸🎶🎵
