This is one of my favorites of theirs. I just about wore through the grooves playing the HotRocks album as a kid. Then I was privileged to finally see them in person on their Bridges to Babylon tour. It was a sold out show for months and then 2 days before the concert they opened additional seating on the wings of the stage because of their unique stage set up, which Mick & Keith kept coming out to play on. I was roughly 15 feet away from these guys as they performed. It was incredible. The baseline in Sympathy for the Devil you could feel down in your soul, as if it was coming from your own body, it was crazy and such an amazing experience (and there were no drugs or alcohol in my system for anyone reading this and wondering lol). Fil, I don't know why you keep listing yourself as just "British guitarist" when clearly you are a historian. Thanks for once again knocking it out of the park Fil.

Some comments on your analysis and a few thoughts of mine: - great choice of song; it highlights Mick Taylor's brilliance - since there are 2 Micks in the band, you should make it clear which one you're talking about (younger people probably don't know the 'other' Mick) - the studio version of this song (on Sticky Fingers) has more of a country feel; in this one, Mick Taylor's playing reminds me of Duane Allman - it's the same period, and same guitar (Gibson SG) - It should be said this is a fantastic 100% live performance by all the Stones; the vocals by Mick and Keith are terrific - Being a guitar player myself, this version is incredibly inspirational, I've watched it hundreds of times - Mick Taylor is one of the greatest guitarists ever

My favorite Rolling Stones song ever is "Can't you hear me knocking" the extended instrumental, the whole thing...It's all Mick Taylor, extended jam session the miraculously got caught on tape, and included on the album! From a different perspective, a bit later, my friend and I decided it would be a good idea to take our respective girlfriends to a nice night out on the town, so we got tickets to a Christmas/New Years performance of the Nutcracker in San Francisco. I asked a friend if we could borrow his car, a "rose-pink" Cadillac (!) and he agreed! It was awesome!!! Bill as stoic as ever and on point. Taylor's melodic sensibilities being like sonic threads that hold it together yet embellish at the same time. By the time I was old enough to see the Stones, the MT era was long past. I was able to see him when he joined the Stones for a few songs during their 50th anniversary tour. I'll admit to being teary eyed. I love your videos Fil. Rock on.

Isn’t it amazing that the British, always thought of as reserved, have so many of the greatest rockers of all time! 🏴 🤘🏼 ❤️
@mevrammcoyoteV8f1505 жыл бұрын
That's because of the American music scene influence on them.

It is amazing yes. The Beatles were first on the scène instantly followed by all these British invasion bands.

Ah yes . Well ..what is British ? We have been invaded and migrated to . We are a sweet little melting pot . We are Celts . We are Saxons . Normans . ... and all the rest . All the rest . I think the reserve is there but not when art , music and performance ate concerned. Hell no !! 😉💕

Taylor's countrified blues playing rules. Love it when he bends the hell out of a note .

I'm not a Stones fan, but I am watching this clip because of Mick Taylor. I was curious after him and his playing. Because he is actually living nearby me in a very small village (called Diever) in the north of the Netherlands. I have seen him several times at the supermarket or on his bycicle with a plastic bag in his hand. People say he's a drunk. And he looks like that; a sad old man. A few years ago Mick Jagger actually visited him. And the whole village was buzzing because Jagger had actually gone to the local little supermarket to buy some food for him and (other) Mick. Can you imagine!!!???! Unfortunately I missed that 😌 Whenever I saw him (Mick Taylor) I thought of the life this man had. Being on stage with the Stones, playing for 200.000 people in Hyde Park. And then seeing him like this; completely faded away into the shadows. It's sad really. You wonder where it all went wrong...

My opinion? Mick took every last bit of the greatness of the Rolling Stones with him. Oh, and his tone on this track is to die for.

I think this was their best period. His playing was perfect for the band and that particular era. I don’t like the Stones material much post-Taylor but we have to be fair - Some Girls is a Great album.

I saw the Stones live 17 October 1973 at Vorst National in Brussels (Brussels Affair) with Billy Preston on keyboards, Trevor Lawrence on saxophone, Steve Madaio on trumpet and Mick Taylor on lead and slide….. the Stones at their peak…..the band was 🔥🔥🔥cooking and Taylor took them to another level….he was fickle and unpredictable, but when he was on his addition to the lineup was fantastic 👏👏👏thanks for the video 😎🥂

I was JUST thinking today about how you haven't analyzed Rolling Stones (in a while, turns out), how great! Loved the story about Mick with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. I learn so much from your videos 😊

Mick Taylor!!! yes!!! Sticky Fingers is one of the best records ever... Underrated... Have listened to it like a thousand times...
@gerard19545 жыл бұрын
ipsurvivor that’s hard to say cuz beggars banquet and exile on Main Street were very good also

ipsurvivor in what world is “Sticky Fingers” underrated? It’s like their seminal most identifiable albums ever.
@gerard19545 жыл бұрын
ledflaplin2001 didn’t say it was underrated just saying those other ones to me were just as good

Thank you for the history there. I was 16 during '69. Exile on Main Street was the last Stones album I cared about. They played to their success thereafter, had a few good songs while settling into making money they didn't need. If they were as honest now as they were way back when, telling that story in song would perhaps be meaningful.

How can you not smile when Keith steps up to join Mick on the mic "take me down little Suzie.." Taylor overplays a bit.

1) Thanks for another good video, Fil. 2) Flowers is one of my favorite Stones songs. 3) Mick’s playing reminds me of what some have said about Ringo: he played just what the song needed, no more.

Mick T actually toured with the Stones again in 2012-2013. He would come out as a special guest and only play a few songs - I think Midnight Rambler during the middle of the set and then Satisfaction at the end - but he was at all the shows on that tour. I think he also toured with Dylan in the '80s, along with playing on some studio tracks.

the stones need three live guitarists I think. so Keith and Wood can do their throwing riffs around, you can have a guitarist holding them together, because at this point there's simply no platform to the guitar live, like Keith used to do

Great analysis Fil ! 🤗 I enjoyed listening to Mick Taylor, loved his guitar playing. 👏👏👏It's a shame that drugs can get in the way of musicians. Take care...

Why is this a competition comments people, Ronnie or Mick are both fabulous guitarists and each gave the Stones something special.
