This version of Dazed and Confused probably contains a couple dozen riffs or pieces, and he just goes on and on. His creative genius is off the charts. He's always been my favorite, not simply for his playing, but his writing, producing, and general over all artistic / creative skills. There really is no other like him. To me he's the 8th wonder of the world.

One of the things that makes Page different is that he’s totally fearless. He goes places that aren’t ‘musically correct’, sometimes paints himself into a corner and gets into trouble but finds his way out. And in the process, he took you places that other guitarists wouldn’t have dared go to. Fearless!

Most guitarist play the same way night after night it gets boring, Jimmy’s mistakes are better than being bored . Not to mention his creativity in the studio . There are better guitarist with speed and technique. But for feel and and diversify in styles Jimmy’s #1 in my book .

Personally as a Zep Head... I'd give it a 3/10 from his whole career. Does that make him seem good? Kinda, but his worst was 1980 to 1984. His top playing was definitively 1971 where it was the best of Pre-1972 showman style and early proto-metal; the the best show in 1973 for fans was mainly Offenburg, Germany. Although some people think the recording's quality is subpar.

As sloppy as Page may have been at times, it simply worked perfectly. Live Zeppelin was all about the feeling and vibe. Page was and still is one of the absolute greatest writers for the guitar from an orchestral approach. Page was the connection between Les Paul and many other players when it came to having what seemed like a thousand guitars playing at once. Yeah, I wish I played guitar as sloppy as Jimmy Page! A musical genius of our time, period.

I've got a lot of boots of Zeppelin and what has always impressed me is Pagey playing it different each night. I'm so glad you played this particular clip, because when people wanna bag on Page & say he's sloppy, I always want to play them this specific live solo- it's incredibly clean AND fast- not to mention, improvised! but Page, like other true greats was much more than just a great guitar player- he was a visionary, a producer, a songwriter, arranger, recording artist, performer- each member of that band was incredible- & the chemistry they had is unmatched to this day! I heard Over The Hills And FarAway on the AM radio back around '74, it really caught my ear & my fancy- I knew I wanted to do that- now 50 years later, I can say I fulfilled the desire to learn how to play guitar on a professional level ,make music & perform & record- but there is still an intangible element to it all, & that's where the magic occurs-

@thebreathalyzer3 жыл бұрын
I think you could say his playing wasn't always precise... but he's more like a jazz player where it's more about the overall vibe and arc to the solo/improvisation than the specific individual notes. He's telling a story and it goes to a whole number of different places and the band all goes exploring that together. There's not a lot of bands playing in that style who could really do those long ranging jams like that...the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, some of those bands did it that way too.

I have to agree that Zeppelin was an incredible improv band. Thats what makes great live music special. They could go off the rails, but Jimmy could usually cue Bonzo to reel it back in. When they were spot on it was magic. They took a lot of risks but it usually paid off. They were that good at it. Sloppy? Sometimes, but the slop usually led to something amazing. You build ideas that way. Zeppelin on a bad day in 1980 is better than most anything out there today. 73 & 75 were incredible.

The “Brown Sound” in all its glory here. Dazed live was a evolving work in progress. If you look at their tour schedule from the ‘73 tour and go back and listen to boot recordings you’ll hear where all this jamming came from and led up to. They ran this workout six out of seven nights for like eighteen months straight. Total ensemble type jam. It was like a flock of birds in that everyone would follow a particular idea and run with it….until the next one. Many of the musical passages heard in Dazed ‘73 can be traced back to live performances back to ‘69.

The idea that a lot of guitarists consider Jimmy Page "sloppy" does his playing a great disservice. The sonic palette from which Jimmy derived his ideas was so, so varied and wide but also very personal. He played what he felt and expressed such a huuuge amount of ideas and sounds throughout the years as to be mind boggling, Although I've heard some dreadful work from Jimmy when he was obviously wasted, when he is on, there is nobody who sounds like him in tone, ideas or expression. In general, to say that he "missed" something is to suggest that one would know what Jimmy was going for in the first place. But if he's only judged for not being as technically accomplished as John McLaughlin or the like, then it's a waste of time.

I love Jimmy's playing. He's never out of ideas and always teetering on the edge of his technical abilities - which are pretty big, given the era he played in. His playing, though sometimes filled with mistakes, is always moving and stirs the emotions. TSRTS STH solo is like someone speaking of an old love. Some of Jimmy's quotes that I think sum up his playing: "I don't deal in technique. I deal in emotions." "I'm not a guitarist as far as a technician goes, I just pick it up and play it. Technique doesn't come into it."

I don't think Jimmy's technique was sloppy just that when you ride that close to the edge you fall off sometimes. The Song Remains the Same version of No Quarter is Page at his rippin best!

Dazed and Confused from their concert movie The Song Remains The Same, excellent!. Jimmy's solo on No Quarter from the same concert movie is quite brilliant. His playing on Since I've Been Loving You, which is in the movie but not on the soundtrack, is brilliant as well. Word of warning though, do not watch that movie while under the influence of acid. It could cause one to become extremely annoyed with Robert Plant's screeching and moaning.

Those Dazed & Confused improvs comprise some of the most dynamic & exhilarating live guitar I've ever heard. The thing with this Song Remains the Same performance is that he just keeps belting out powerful guitar lines for twenty minutes & doesn't relent. It's an audio assault of the senses. It reaches a tremendous climax before returning to Robert's final verse. Then Jimmy goes above & beyond the call of duty to deliver a blistering finale that takes something which has already essentially peaked to yet another level. I've never seen another guitarist do that.

Steve Rickenbacher wanna bet what what ? please elaborate, or at least maybe a full thought, sentance. Fil's whole point was improvising, playing in the moment, If that concept is foreign to you, then you have no idea of live music/artistry - Garcia is the definition of that.

They were one of the greatest bands on the planet, if not the greatest. If Page is sloppy, it is pleasing a great many people. Page was bold playing off the cuff, and never sticking to rigid rules. Sloppy needs credit , if it sells nearly 300 million albums.

Just the SRTS album alone qualifies Jimmy to be the best. Every note, every phrase, the way each phrase stops and goes onto the next is so masterful. No one comes close. Give me Jimmy at his sloppiest over anyone else at their best any time.

Jimmy page was a beast of a player at the top of his game. But later in life due to a secret drug addiction after the band broke up he stopped playing I believe for a while and that’s apparent when he’s in a concert with Eric Clapton you can see Eric has brought him along as his friend and to inspire jimmy back into playing. As jimmy was very rusty in that concert. But in his prime of playing he was a monster

The film footage of that concert shows the train wreck that Page was by that point. Fortunately, he was able to straighten himself out.

The greatness of Jimmy Page is in the fact that no matter how sloppy he may seem to be, everything he does comes out right. He has an uncanny ability when it comes to shaping a chaotic storm of guitar sounds and riffs and runs into something that makes sense.......

To the people saying page is too sloppy ...No one can play like page people try but can't. this is improvising at its finest. you wont catch steve vai playing like this or joe satch (great players) because they don't have pages mindset. It's hard to try and emulate page he has infinite sounds that'll make you wonder how he even does that. his sloppiness makes him unique and a little slop doesn't hurt anybody it just adds to the guitar lore. All the greats had a pinch of slop ( Duane allman, hendrix, roy buchanan, clapton etc) slop is part of the guitar lore just the right amount though.

Sloppy or not, there is more heart and more interesting ideas in this than the vast majority of rock players manage to convey. And, yeah, his phrasing and feel is so unique and funky!! IMO a lot of the "slop" is rhythmically brilliant! and very hard to copy.
