I do hope that people understand that this is a cover from Billy Cobham's debut album Spectrum - one of the most amazing jazz-rock (fusion) albums. And yes, this was written by a drummer. Spectrum contains some of the most insanely melodic shredding by the incomparable Tommy Bolin.

I've also viewed many of your reactions to music video's as well which always adds new insights , which is always cool! Never heard of Govn't Mule before but they have that great " Southern Rock" sound , heard of John Scofield of course, love his playing in all genres.

John's solo with Pat Martino on the song "Sunny" is so good. He always keeps you guessing where he's going next just like here with Warren. A real master of the guitar. He played with the great Jaco Pastorius on Jaco's bass instructional video from the mid 80's.

This is the rockiest I've seen Scofield for a while. The song was from Billy Cobham's first album(Spectrum) after the original Mahavishnu Orch. broke up. Tommy Bolin was great on that album. I was lucky enough to go to the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1976, and the Billy Cobham / George Duke Band was there. George Duke sang lead vocals and played keyboards on the original "Inca Roads". Their guitarist was John Scofield. He had long hair, and used a wawa a lot.(It's on KZbin) That was a good year. McLaughlin was there with Shatki, and Larry Carlton was the long haired white guitarist in the Crusaders. Anyway, jamming on this must have taken Scofield back to his youth. Jeff Beck plays this song often, and there's a good version with Cobham, Frank Gambale, and Brian Auger on KZbin.

Thanks Fil. Another great thing about Warren is his guest musicians. Every show theres a music great sitting in. It started when Allen Woody passed. For a couple years Mule had no bassist. Warren didn't want to replace his friend Allen, so all bass players were outrageous greats...from all parts. Like Jack Bruce for a show I saw. He also had keyboardists from all over sit in with them. And the amazing thing is the eagerness to which great musicians show up. It's a testament to his esteem in the music world. When he hosts his Christmas Musicians Benefits there are great thrown together groups....just people doing what they love.

Hey Fil. Did you know Gov't Mule was a power trio back when Allen Woody was on bass. He passed 20 years ago today. Warren and Max auditioned many, many players before settling on the clay like ever changing format that is Gov't Mule today. Woody was a powerful bassist for the Allman Brothers at the same time as Warren. There's a beautiful tribute to him penned by Warren in Google today.

If you've not heard the original... it is from the jazz drummer great Billy Cobham album named "Spectrum," and the guitarist on that cut/album is the immortal Tommy Bolin. If you can't place that name, Tommy Bolin's first band was Zephyr in 1969 and he went on to front The James Gang after Joe Walsh left, then replaced Richie Blackmore in Deep Purple... and this was all before he died of a drug overdose at 25! He was an amazing guitarist that few people know about, and just thin... if this is what he did before he was 25, what could have been?

And they're both so low key, no rock star bullshit. Anyhow, find a Laura Nyro track called 'Beads Of Sweat' from 1970. The woman was a visionary and a genius. Aside from all her contributions to the song-songwriter and composer, beautiful voice multitracked and doing all the vocals plus she's playing piano-, she's got Richard Davis (One of the great Jazz bassists) on acoustic bass and Chuck Rainey on electric bass doubling up on the bass line, Cornel Dupree on electric guitar, and Dino Danelli, the Powerhouse drummer for the Rascals, on the drums. We're talking serious heavy hitters. And then she brings in Duane Allman to play electric guitar and lead guitar. "And we all looked out to God although He is the color of the wind". The song gets dangerously close to pure joy.

This is a studio cut, but check out "Protocol" from John during his '80s days. Absolutely killer piece: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn6lk6yQd8mEd7M

Miles sure did know how to pick 'em! I attended a Scofield gig when he was striking out on his own, and someone sitting behind me made this remark to his girlfriend: "Al Di Meola better learn to enjoy the taste of manure sandwiches.""

Extremely expressive playing even if you did not see him moving. And digressing by saying, a REAL Rhodes....still!

@@davekiddie4467 Jeff said that hearing this album changed his playing. I also recall reading Tommy od'd after a jam with JB back in '75, RS. It shocked me. Max was also influential but i feel Tommy opened a door. Actually read the GP break down i didn't want to read at first. This is where the JB quote came from.
