I saw Mayall at the legendary Golden Bear, in Huntington Beach, California, twice in the early 80's. Once with Walter Trout, and the other time with Mick Taylor on guitar (and a few years later with Coco Montoya.) Why this guy has not been recognized by the industry for his contribution to blues and rock is bewildering, to me. A finishing school for guitar legends, only equaled by The Yardbirds and The Allman Brothers Band. I remember feeling fortunate to be able to see him, as a young man who thought then that fifty was old. And yet, he's still out there spreading the gospel of the blues to newer and newer generations...

I bought my first John Mayall album in the 60's (Blues Breakers) and I bought my last one last year, but I hear he has another out. He has put one out almost every year....and they are still some of the best blues you will hear. He has helped dozens of people in their careers and then lets them move on so room for the next person. His legacy is one of the longest in blues AND rock history. He has influenced so many people along the way, the list is mind boggling. And he can still play a lot of instruments. So happy you did this.

Saw John in St Kilda Melbourne some 30 idd years ago. Great night out. My guitarist brother came along and ended up playing lead for a successful blues band in Melbourne with a permanent residency in a groovey suburb. Wow, the absolutely incredible John Mayall another guy from back in the day. Another song where John tells us all about it ! So smooth, so cool for a guy that absolutely drives his point home. The guitarist absolutely takes you back to the place where it happened as John tells us all about it. Beautiful. Thanks Fil for another technical journey that you take us on. The guitarist then tells us his side of the story so convincingly and dynamically, what a treat ! Then John vocally reiterates the importance of his side of the story with even greater delivery matching the intensity of the guitarist. Beautiful, excellent, two great performers in a blues duet. Gary Moore was a force of nature with a gentle touch that could caress or sting like nobody else ! One of favorite guitar players . Male or female , English , American , or whatever . Also this video is one of the best vocals John Mayall has ever done . In my opinion he got better with age , instead of weaker . I never felt that he was equal to the guitar players he has had with his vocals in the early days ! He is one Great talent scout , I can tell you that !! I miss Gary Moore !! Sadly missed , and taken too soon !!!

On Mayall's 70th birthday concert DVD, though it was great to see Clapton and Mick Taylor play with him again, for me the big surprise was Buddy Whittington's playing. There are also videos on KZbin of Buddy's band with Gary Moore guesting, and Buddy playing a lot of slide. Lately, they've been putting out CD's of Mayall touring the U.S. in the 80's with Mick Taylor. As far as Mayall retrospectives go, the 1971 "Back To The Roots" album, besides Clapton and Taylor, also had some songs with Harvey Mandel on guitar. There's a guy with a recognizable style. I saw a KZbin video of him on stage wearing a kind of a mask over his nose. In a recent interview he said he has had 34 operations ( including reconstruction) on a rare form of cancer that was discovered in his nose. He says he is cancer free now, but still has a couple of operations to go, and funding has been a problem. He's 74 now, and hasn't quit playing.

When I saw John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers back in around 2003, it was Buddy Whittington on guitar, with Robben Ford (the opening act) sitting in on some songs. As far as the voice going first, I know that's often the case, but I saw Tony Bennett in concert when he was 80 and his voice was incredible. Of course I love Gary Moore and had never seen him play with Mayall before now!

When I was a senior (1968/69) in high school, some of the musician kids were into this music. They played in church and school basements and cafeterias . Its where I first learned of John Mayall and buying a few of his albums. And then I got to see him with his band and Blind Faith. There was one song California with a saxophone and when he got to the high note....The experience of hearing and feeling this music in person.

Wow Fil...great job and as insightful as ever. This performance was like a master class on how two great but very different players can add so much to a performance. I cant help but think John had it in mind when this performance was conceived...John is a master of live production...I always thought of him as an architect of sorts and he ALWAYS gets the best out of players. Fine human being too. I have an anecdote: I provided backline for him at a festival in the nineties. Not one to hide out in his trailer during the opening acts, he was enjoying pizza with my crew and really listening to the other bands... At one point a very famous British blues band was playing...every note perfect, every note sterile. John said, "enough of this". Motioned me to follow him and as we exited back stage he probably put 6 Guinness in various places in his denim jacket. I thought it peculiar as I had seen him nursing the one in his hand for quite awhile. We went into the crowd, (who did not recognize him), and he proceeded to chat people up after offering them a stout. Never mentioned his name...asked people about themselves and if they were having a good time. Epitome of grace and humility. We got back just in time to get him onstage where he proceeded to deliver one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. Nicest legend ever...

WOW ! Thats all, just WOW ! What can you expect from the man who gave us Clapton and Taylor? The story goes that back in those heady times, John would make everybody play 8 hrs. a day, whether they were gigging or not. Thats how they became so damn good (not forgetting their talent). I used to listen to the BluesBreakers back in 70-71 and was totally in love with their sound. I particularly loved the two albums he made w/o drums, which he accomplished by having a very good bass. My fave piece of John's has always been "Room To Move", in which he does that fantastic harp solo. Glad to see that at this advanced age, the man is still "kicking out the jams".

Pre 1970 John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers produced seminal all time great influential albums. Parchment Farm up there with anything. IMHO, Peter Green was the greatest blues guitarrist this country (Britain) ever produced. Edit and i include Eric, Gary and any other Brit in that statement. Not counting Rory, coz he's Irish.... By the way, Buddy is good in this. Real good. Gary is, well, just Gary. Always great. Saw him live with Thin Lizzy - smallish 3k hall, standing only - mind blowing.

I saw John with Gary Moore and when buddy was still playing with John in 06 at Sheppard's bush empire.I waited outside in the rain for a hour to get John's signature,when he asked me where I was from I said Australia while he was signing my ticket.He let me on the tour bus and got my program fully signed a night I will never forget.

Always a fan of Gary Moore playing. He did a solo on Stand By Me with Roger Daltrey on vocal and the late Greg Lake on bass as well. Even his solo exchange on The Thrill Is Gone with BB King is top notch! You should really check these 2 out. A master of the guitar, both at technique and feels.

I’ve seen John probably 5 times in my lifetime. Years ago in the 60/70’s and last year in nyc at les Paul’s club. So he was what 80 something. Glad he’s playing, but I just felt a bit of sadness there. Selling his cd’s and such. The Godfather of British blues still got the blues. 🤘🏻
