Honestly, the *most* impressive thing about Gilbert is the guys humility..... He's always really down to earth, never comes off as egotistical. Likely from years of teaching and having to relate to students as well. But as @wingsofpegasus said, he's always just a good guy. Even though everyone has been putting him on a pedestal for decades now, and deservedly so. Same with Guthrie Govan, just a great and down to earth guy, and an absolute monster on the instrument.

I've actually met Paul. And Billy Sheehan as well. My cousin works at Göta Källare in Stockholm, and he managed to squeeze me in backstage when Paul played there in 2010. I brought my guitar with me for him to sign, which he generously did. And then he said: "Well, let's see what you've got!" I almost shat myself! XD I couldn't compete with his monster skill, of course, but he showed me some pretty cool riffs and exercises. Absolutely top guy. And not only can he play like the devil himself, but he's also one of those blokes who gives back to the guitar community by giving lessons and always sharing what he knows. I met Billy in a music store, where he was demonstrating a new model bass (can't remember which it was). Also a really nice guy with monster skills. And hilariously funny. I got him to sign my guitar as well, but luckily (?), I didn't have to play with him...

Yeah MAB is a great player... Gilbert's picking over a wide variety of licks and styles, plus his impeccable control of dynamics, are still unparalleled, in my opinion... And his riffs, rhythms and harmonies are just as good as his leads... Lots of unique gems in his old VHS, like the first terrifying shred solo in Intense Rock 1 or Screamin Blues O'Mania, also The Gargoyle, Colorado Bulldog's pentatonic madness intro and outro, and one of my favorite shred-song ever composed Let The Computer Decide, there's a perfect live performance of it from an asian's clinic, you should check it out...

I met him at a clinic after Mr Big had blown up and he was still this super cool guy, like it was him meeting his idol, not the other way around! also his musical knowledge really, REALLY blew me away. He did a piece where he would ask for song & band from the audience and then play it and discuss the structure of the melody and the progressions, modes, inversions they were using... people were calling out some pretty weird and random stuff, I thought it had to be rigged (and practiced) until a mate called out some ABBA song, which he again nailed! I asked him afterwards and he said he just randomly called it out as it was the most un metal song he could think of...
@fistoftulkas73356 жыл бұрын
Yep, Gilbert is a good drummer too, he can play different instruments... I've seen him trading places with Tomas Lang in his recent tours for a song or two, also at soundchecks, same with Pat Torpey (sadly missed) in Mr Big, he played Smoke On The Water on drums in 2009 at Budokan... And yes Gilbert is a human's jukebox, it seems he knows every pop, rock, whatever song mankind ever created and can play it perfectly on request, mindblowing stuff...

After watching a few of you videos, I think I am on the same line as you. I really like some slower more melodic playing mixed with technical brilliance. Was this filmed in 1982? On a serious note; Paul Gilbert is fuckin amazing. One of the best guitarists alive. He's got the speed. technical proficiency, plus he can deliver very tasteful and melodic music. Way better than Malmsteen.
@wingsofpegasus6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Paul is really cool too, I once saw an 'instructional' DVD by Malmsteen where he wouldn't explain how he shifted from one string to another he said 'I just kinda do it' and that 'it just happens'. Like some kind of school kid hiding his special secret trick. The answer was either an upstroke or downstroke. When you've played for a while its easy to figure out anyway. Paul always explains everything clearly and isn't this childish!
@yellowlightingbolt6 жыл бұрын
wingsofpegasus That is because Malmsteen is useless as a teacher. Just because you are good at doing something does not mean you are good at teaching or passing on that knowledge (it is a different skill) however that doesn't make you a worse guitarrist (in fact Gilbert counts Malsmteen as one od his influences). Having said that is true that Gilbert is great at explaining music. I am not a player myself and still love his instructional videos.

Fil, mate your right, now that you mentioned it I agree that it does indeed have that Comfortably Numb feel and sound in the background. Nice job on this as well. I think it's an awesome feeling when folk's are able to get past just listening to music. But when you are able to feel the emotive sounds that the musicians are putting out there in your on soul it is a very cool and personal thing for not just the musicians but to the folk's who appreciate the abilities music has. It's not just for the ears. It can help you to heal quicker, it is the One Absolute that can bring many different folk's from many distant places together. Lol, I know I'm preaching to the choir. But lot's of folk's miss out on these awesome vibes. Cheers from across the pond in Utah.

Paul has and uses every tool in the tool box. He has such a huge catalog of music to listen to and appreciate. Blues, Metal, Classical Electric, Classical Acoustic, his range has no boundaries. Paul and Guthrie Govan share the rare talent to play, feel, and understand the minor details of many major styles. Anyone can play the notes at this level. But their talent is broad. Guys who play notes without the emotion, just play notes faster. Andy Timmons too. A beast

I have massive respect for paul gilbert. He is probably the best rock guitarist on the planet. But what I always really revered about him is how musically open minded he is, he listens to all kinds of music and really loves to understand how it works and use these tricks and techniques for himself. I remember him saying in an interview when he went to study music it changed everything for him, he heard more genres and styles and learned more theory and made him really nail down his techniques come up with more music ideas and licks. He is also an incredibly nice guy. I actually met him when I was in Manchester a few years ago when i was a university student, I was a beginner at that point and i walked into a pub i used to visit a lot and there he was. I walked up to him and introduced myself and he asked me what my name was what i did, and he gave me some great advice he literally just said "listen to music you like even if people say its lame,practice your tail off, but its okay to put the guitar down for a few days everyone needs a break and don't be scared to learn theory" then he told me about his website which I still use time to time as a learning resource. Do you think Paul Gilbert was actually playing through a big muff at the beginning here as implied on the green screen? I thought he would have been a rack guy back then.

Yeah I don't know! I wonder if he can remember that far back?!

Paul's signature Ibanez picks (plectrums) changed my life. No lie.
@adrianlee34976 жыл бұрын
Mike Varney knew how to pick 'em. I saw one of those fringe guitars in a pawn shop for relatively cheap I didn't know it was his signature model until later. That's his Racer X stuff on the Shrapnel label.

I would love to play like Paul Gilbert. His video “Intense Rock” was a huge help for me to learn alternate picking. Now that I am getting the arthritis I have to get used to the idea of letting it go. (I would have to be in my teens to even hope to get to his level. As if...lol Thanks, Phil!

I think it's called Metal Dog, and the phrase after the intro melded into what is now known as Technical difficulties

Paul loves the blues. To be with you, one of the first songs I learned by ear, after the National Anthem.

Anything that is intense enough is not for everybody . That is why we see many people getting turned off by metal music when even the very best musical elements are there in the metal music community. Same goes for technical guitar players. Paul's technical difficulties is a classic great example of shredding where one can definitely see it is melodious, has music theory behind it's composition, has many cool techniques, has dynamics, has intro, build ups, main lead solo , outro, everything. But it is not for everyone. I have friends who say there are no lyrics / singing in the song when I blasts instrumental music in the car. What ever it is, it doesn't matter. The fact that we understand what it is, that we appreciate it , that we learn these songs to actually play it, shows a lot.

One way to help overcome the wide interval finger stretch thing, though it's a bit of a drastic measure, with it's own set of disadvantages, is to use a shorter scale instrument, so that the frets will all be closer together.
@wingsofpegasus6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm not sure I could live with the look of it! But it's ok its not a problem to use the right hand, I actually prefer the legato sound of tapping!

So we need per individual sized scaled guitars to utilize that range of fretted stretch instead of one size fits all. Not like pro hockey players have mold form prescribed skates at their "Advantage" Paul has adapted the stringing to expediated his playing and possibly used different sized instruments in his playing for instance the double bass.

Man, your titles always get me before I click to watch the video. As you know, the miniatures in YT's main page don't display the title's full text, so this video was titled "British guitarist reacts to Paul Gilbert's lack of technical...", which I immediately assumed to be lack of technical skills! XD

Funny thing, when Mr Big first arrived on the scene my friends and I were all looking at each other thinking, just great, another hair metal band but when you listened a bit closer you knew they were anything but, and I think Paul and Billy Sheehan had more than a little something to do with that hehe.
