They've been playing together for over 30 years. First in a metal band and then as an acoustic duo. Their on-stage chemistry is pure perfection.

There's no delicate way of putting this, but I've learned a lot from watching Gabriella's right hand over the years. I still can't quite pull those moves off but it gives the nylon-string guitar such a unique sound. Cheers, Fil.

I remember her from her days busking in Dublin. All the lads were crazy about her because she was gorgeous but also a phenomenal guitarist. That percussive technique is effortless when you see it live and she's so at one with her instrument.

Yeah, it's crazy to me that they aren't more popular. Almost anything you can play on acoustic will end up sounding good on a nylon string. And there are plenty of hybrid ones that are acoustic electric with thinner necks that suit steel string players more.
@willykanos10446 жыл бұрын
It is interesting. Several US Country artists have used nylon string guitars. Not always but you can find a lot of videos on You Tube of Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and Willie Nelson playing nylon string guitars.

"It's very hard"? The music written for nylon string guitars is hard, classical and flamenco. But Nylon string guitars are much easier on the fingers to play than steel string guitars

It took some searching but I FINALLY found this video! I am SO happy to see you react to and analyze Rodrigo y Gabriela. I've been following them since the first time I heard Tamucan. Having been raised in a family where music was constant, instruments were everywhere and records were always on from Back, Beethoven, Handel, Haydn, &Tchaikovsky to the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul, & Mary, & John Denver, to CSNY, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Metallica to Dougie Maclean, The Battlefield Band, Altan, to Tommy Emmanuel, Robin Bullock, Al Petteway... so many amazing musicians & compositions & genres; Rodrigo & Gabriella blew me away from the first bar and have somehow captured ALL of the FEEL of what I grew up on, all at once. They are incredibly technically talented and unique, my favorite part of any of their perfprmances is watching Gabriella get lost in the music. Fantastic duo, incredible playing, writing & performing! Ahhhhh God I love them! Thank you so much for touching on them! They deserve so much appreciation & respect.Thank you, Fil! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Rock \m/

So cool, my wife & I saw them at the House of Blues in Chicago back in 2010, great show!!! As for hand stress, I use to play at the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Wisconsin (2011-2015) & I would play a Spanish Renaissance style using the same type of flamenco technique & at 8+hrs of playing in hot weather, the top of my hand would swell up, didn't hurt, but would go a little numb, so I can definitely relate to any hand injuries Gabriela might have gotten!!! Thanks for sharing this Fil, you ROCK my friend!!! Stay safe, Rock On & God Bless!!!

Thanks for doing these guys, Fil! You're on a bit of an acoustic roll, here. I noticed a couple folks mentioned GyR in the comments from last night's installment. Elfasci is new to me, so thanks for that one, too, btw. You seem to have the history more or less down, but it's worth mentioning that Gabriella worked up that percussive style as part of a deliberate effort on the duo's part to develop a unique personal sound. These days, one can search "new flamenco" and, surprise! it sounds like GyR. So, they've essentially spawned a genre, which i figure for a mighty feat. Plus, you know i like these sorts of stylistic fusions. Now, i also noticed that the old Crossroads duel came up in conversation last week, with the conventional Vai and Cooder lines being drawn. Here's the article i go to to settle the question, wherein Cooder consistently defers to Arlen Roth and Bill Kanengiser: www.guitarworld.com/artists/forgotten-guitar-crossroads-and-its-unsung-guitar-hero-arlen-roth. Here's Roth working out a classic with his solo band, (see if you can detect Roy Buchanan's influence): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGiUaKGbecSer68
