I'm from the same town as Sonny and have had the pleasure of hearing him live for the last 40+ years, often sitting in with other local legends like Clifton Chenier, Zachary Richard, and others. Very, very down to earth guy.

Yep - Breaux Bridge, LA. I was the F.O.H. sound engineer and production manager for Sonny back in the 90's. Sonny (and Dave Ranson on bass) both excellent guys to work with and very laid back. We used to go to "Cafe Des Amis" when I was in town visiting with Sonny. Excellent restaurant - which I was told is now closed. Always a good time on tour with Sonny and Dave! Both top notch musicians.

Sonny is one of very few guitar players that legit blows my mind. I've seen him a few times and and very often during the show I'll need to shake my head real fast just to make sure I'm actually awake and this is not some sort of dream bc what he had just played was so mind boggling that it should not be possible in the real world. He is one of, if not THE best living guitar player in the world. Also he's a SUPER duper nice guy and very humble. Got to do a meet and greet with him and he was so gracious towards his fans.

Oooooooh Sonny.... KING of Slydeco! This guy carved out his own niche among slide players* (most others are 'occasional' slide players, not Sonny) by developing a "behind-the-slide" playing technique that is singular and amazing. Slide on pinky, his other fingers are free to fret notes, chords and chord fragments! That, my friends, is incredible dexterity and tactile sensitivity. Right hand slaps and taps; his picking is what I call a Hybrid/Full PIMA method of picking; most other hybrid pickers only use just a couple of fingers. Sonny Landreth is a truly unique and creative player, and in my opinion a Criminally Underrated Guitarist. Thanx Fil! For the due and proper on guys like Sonny. ROCK!

I hear criminally underrated a lot and often about people that other players are aware of and respect but also have a decent following among the public. I just saw a comment I did on Sonnys 4 U & Forever? And he is hardly heard but he is amazing. I first heard him on College Radio show called The Bayou. And the phrase is definitely warranted in his case.

For myself, Sonny has the edge over the great Derek Trucks, hailing from the musical gumbo that is Louisiana/New Orleans. Such a melting pot of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz, blues, country, rocknroll, cajun, zydeco & beyond. Then there's that fretting behind the slide technique...he's definitely my favourite electric blues based slide guitarist. Speaking of great slide guitarists, I'd love to hear your assessment of jazz slide monster, Dave Tronzo...check him out, he'll melt your face!

When I was a kid, I saw Duane Allman, so I went out and bought an Ernie Ball glass slide. I thought I was okay, until around 1995 I was at an invitational jam with The Hippy Dogs and Kirby Kelly got up and started playing with two slides. I didn't take my slide out anymore. Then I caught Sonny playing somewhere, when I got home I took my slide out and sat it on my practice amp. Around that time I was talking to a Roady with Government Mule, with Warren standing right there, the roady said if you want to hear some really great slide playing go see Derick Trucks, Warren nodded like he was in full agreement with the roady and that Derick was bad ass. So first time I had a chance, I went to hear him, when I got home I tossed my slide into the waste basket.

Exactly, Fil! I think Sonny heard and saw(ABB played NO a lot) things, like the Duane's "bird calls" on Mountain Jam for example(sliding the end of his slide back to the bridge), then later heard some of those harmonics through his Dumble, and extended/manipulated. Just my guess. Who knows where Duane would be today?

oh yeah. I can even tell when he's playing the violin on a cut I've never heard. he's just got such an organic and unique sound. You can pick him out.

I have heard you say on many slide guitarist the value of putting the slide on their pinky but could one put the slide on their index finger and get fretted slide action that way also.
@wingsofpegasus6 жыл бұрын
It's possible, but to fret 2nd finger to little finger might be a bit awkward especially if your hands are on the smaller side. Unless you just want one fretted note at a kind, that would be ok.
@goodun60815 жыл бұрын
Not really, because you want, actually you really need, to be able to have your other fingers mute the strings behind the slide to stop weird backwards noises from the strings. The only way it works to put the slide on your index finger is if you are Australian guitarist Dave hole, who plays slide over hand style, almost like lap steel, but on a standard guitar and instead of holding the slide between his fingers he puts it on his index finger. Dave Hole is an anachronism, to say the least.. He is also a monstrous slide guitarist and a very good blues-rock singer-songwriter, by the way.

That kid, Lucciano Pizzichini, from Argentina, is 18 this year. I saw some original stuff that he did recently with a band he put together himself--kind of bluesy, kind of crunchy, kind of technical. Very nice. It wasn't right up top when i looked just now, but here's a little solo work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZywqKutqdyenNk

@@hipgnotist777 This seemed kinda broken...not smooth. Like the gretsch drums behind him. Liked him better a kid.

I kind of agree, but now you know who he is. I'll post that original stuff later if i find it. It's rather better.
