All good, just want to make sure that some of the true facts are mentioned. I think the true story is inspiring and compelling. The War of 1812 seems to get glossed over on the 🇺🇸. I guess because of several blunders and almost loosing the country just 30+ years after gaining Independence at the conclusion of American Revolution is not a bright spot. Canada 🇨🇦 had probably the best outcome from this conflict. The saddest part is the fact that thousands lost their lives needlessly during this period.

Hi Beesley .. great reaction to our history. When I attended school .. we'd start our day by standing, putting our right hands over our hearts & turning to look @ the US flag .. then reciting "The Pledge Of Allegiance" every morning. Each classroom had a flag. On these same lines there's a video of an explanation to The Pledge Of Allegiance narrated by an old time highly respected famous comedian Red Skelton, which my parents watched in the '50's & 60's. This is definitely one of his serious moments. He does an excellent job. Hope you will react to this ad well. Thank you .. see the link here: www.alssar.org/red-skelton-s-pledge-of-allegiance.html Btw: In the early 70's someone came up with the brilliant idea that prayer wasn't allowed in schools & this allegiance did contain the words "..one nation under God".. So reciting the allegiance in school has been stopped. Very very sad. I felt this may interest you Beesley. B safe & well .. peace💓✌🏼😊

It's not offensive; the War of 1812 or the American front of the Napoleonic War is not taught as much in schools in Europe as it is in the US. It's not taught enough in the primary schools in the US. The war of 1812 gave America the identity it has where love of iconography and love of country originated. During the American revolution it was 13 colonies fighting for their independence. The war of 1812 was where the 15 states actually became a team and got a true American identity. We wouldn't become the powerhouse everyone knows and love for another 130 years. The US was the 16th most powerful military in 1914 behind countries like Italy. Even after WWI the US sought to have a small army with a medium sized reserve component. After WWII the threat from the USSR made an increased military necessary. Most people don't just sit around reading history books for fun. I prefer to read Cassius Dio and Plutarch over John Robert Elting and Carl Benn.

I hear Europeans find our flag flying weird but THIS is just one of the reasons we are so proud to fly our flags everywhere. We fought HARD for that right and we NEVER forget it. It’s not the middle finger to the world, it’s our pride in our past, present and future warriors that bought that right with their lives.

I’m Hispanic but before that I’m a proud red blooded American, that flag flys proudly on my front porch and is all over my house. That flag represents not only the fight and blood spilled by those defending and forming our country but by the risk my parents made to come here from Mexico and Guatemala in the 80’s in order to have a better life for themselves and future kids. It’s an ideal to strive towards a beacon of hope to many abroad and my family in those countries tell me so. That ideal has been built upon by history time and time again.

Now every time I here it I cringe .. both at the words and how I was duped. On the plus side. If enough people believe in the ideas expressed, even if not true today, maybe one day this country will live up to the ideals. I am hopeful but I am not holding my breath either.

As a first generation American, (first generation immigrant to America), I find the British history during WWII equally inspiring and respect you the same way. Right now the people of Britain and the people of the USA are in another fight for their lives, a more dangerous fight as the enemy is now within, brainwashing our young in our own schools, throwing awful, evil theories that paint racism against white people as good, painting freedom and freedom of speech as "violence" and "evil", painting men as "toxic", and canceling anybody who stands up to such evil. It is a time described in the Bible as when the culture calls evil good and good evil. Let's pray that with God's help we can slay this type of hatred.

I like it when the Star Spangled Banner is sang soft like that. It is one of the few national anthems that tell a story. Too many singers get all wrapped up in the tough notes & their ability to hit them. But, I prefer when it is sung soft & we can dwell on the story. A story about perseverance ... about what the founders were willing to endure to create freedom for their children.

I strongly agree. I don't like that the Anthem has turned into a benchmark. It loses meaning because of it. It's used as a sort of 'test' or proof of one's abilities, to the point that they often completely disregard the original notes and make up their own highnotes just to show off.

My father was left for dead on the battlefield in Luzon on his 20th birthday in 1945. Shot three times in the chest and his helmet blown off by shrapnel. Also shot in the shoulder. He was in the hospital over four months, and was proud of his service until he died four years ago, but was very anti-war because of his experiences. He knew that sometimes there is no other option. He was typical of nearly every hero who has fought every war this country has been in, including the War of 1812 which this song is about. The story of our flag and the stories of all the people like my dad are why we love our country, this song and the flag so much. It's far from perfect, but we will defend it to the end if necessary.

I knew a WWII veteran who also fought in the Philippines, after Gen. McArthur's return. On the island of Luzon, up the Villa Verde Trail, in clean-up operations. Being constantly on the move necessitated digging a foxhole every evening: 3 inhabitants with rotating guard, 2 slept as the 3rd kept vigilance. As the Japanese usually defied surrendering, daytimes they hid in mountain caves, at night they persistently sought out the Allies. At the entrance of the caves, Allied forces urged, using Japanese speakers, the cornered combatants to come out and surrender -- which seldom occurred. After sufficient time elapsed, the bulldozers went into action, closing up the cave. This vet talked about the heroism of the Australians who fought alongside -- what with their distinctive attire of bermuda-shorts and one-side-turned-up Aussie hats. He went on to Japan for occupation duty. Malaria contracted in the Philippines left him 10% disabled, but like many of that generation, after the initial 2-year period, he declined to reapply for further disability payments as he felt that was "milking the government.". The disease disqualified him from ever donating blood, too.

He too went to Japan for occupation duty -- duration of the war plus 8 months. He said when they marched in, the Japanese lined the streets with their backs turned to them. They thought it was a sign of disrespect, but later found that it was that the Japanese did not feel that it was respectful to look at those they had fought against.

After the 9/11 Attacks. The Olympics were held in Colorado and the American athlete's held the flag while a choir sang the national anthem, you see in the video, a gust of wind picks up the tattered flag on the lyric of the anthem "rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that are our flag is still there, oh does that star spangled, banner yet wave?" It's beautiful, like the WTC flag waved in the wind like it was wounded. And near the end they rose up a new American flag. You should definitely check it out.

Two quick points: The video left out one of the most moving parts, which is when the fighting was over, the commander ordered the raising of another HUGE flag -- he said he wanted it to be so big that everyone everywhere could see it. Second, IMO, the best rendition of the anthem was sung by Whitney Houston before the Super Bowl during Gulf War 1.

There’s no confusion. This video was written by people who failed US History 1. This is not the American Revolution. The days of Colonies had long passed; by 36 years and though some call the War of 1812 the 2nd war for independence, it had nothing to do with independence. As said, the US was recognized by Britain as a sovereign state with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. It was not Fort Henry; rather McHenry. The illustration of prisoners below deck are of Civil War prisoner. You can tell by their caps. They even transcribed the words wrong. It’s “so proudly we HAILED” not held.

I saw someone else comment it, but just wanted to clarify. This was written post Revolutionary war, in 1814. We went to war with Britain, this would be known as the “War of 1812” very creative. But this is of course the most famous story and take away from the war. But there are many more, such as The Battle of New Orleans. Where then Gen. Andrew Jackson held off the British and gained his claim to fame. Which he very much used in running for President and becoming our 7th President. Also, Dolly Madison, wife/First Lady of then President James Madison (Founding Father). As the White House was burning to the ground, she grabbed herself and saved a painting of George Washington, one of the most famous ones. I believe is in the White House to this day. Even in American, the War of 1812 isn't taught much. I'm fortunate to live in Maryland, where this battle (Battle of Fort McHenry) took place, so we learn of it for sure. But anyway... that's that lol. Great video mate! Edit: Oof... looks like some people are getting heated over the inaccuracies 😂 sorry about that mate. Britain was not trying to reclaim the colonies. The US declared war on Britain because we didn't like some of their trade restrictions and we wanted more land. And no, we did not win. We got the shit kicked out of us. It ended with a treaty, but to any objective observer, we lost and lost badly.
@randomdude185
@randomdude185 3 жыл бұрын
Incorrect on several counts. We declared war on them because they along with the French had been impressing American sailors into service in the British and French Navies during the Napoleonic wars which ran concurrent to the War of 1812. We said we would join the side of whichever nation stopped impressing American sailors and France stopped first. We tried to take Canada in the war, the exact reason for this move is unclear as the journals of several important figures of the time contradict each other. During the war when in looked like the UK was going to win hands down one of the things they were demanding was the US becoming apart of the empire again, so yeas they were trying to reclaim us. And we didn't lose the war, much less badly no territory changed hands and neither side paid reparations which by the standards of the times meant it was a draw. Especially when you consider that the British considered it a theater of war in the Napoleonic wars, and not a separate war like we did, which means we were pretty much the only ally of Napeloen that made it out ok.

@Atheos B. Sapien It has inaccuracies that is true, but the spirit of the video is true. This was the belief of the American people at the time, and the attitude that they viewed the war through. In that sense, it is true. Propaganda, as an aside, is not the same as a lie. Propaganda is about messaging. It can be good or bad, and used for many purposes, both noble and evil. It lifts morale and is intended to bring inspiration. Inspiration, in turn, makes us better people as we try to live up to the narratives that underpin our society and culture.

@Atheos B. Sapien I think maybe you'd be better served looking up the origins of propaganda. "You Can Do It!" That's propaganda. You know, the sort of shit people refer to as motivational posters or whatever? That's LITERALLY propaganda. It is engineered to have an impact on your outlook. You are falling into the trap of framing it as strictly a negative concept, because it is commonly equated with malicious political ideological messaging in modern day. I am very glad that you aren't looking to debate reality with me, because reality doesn't accept arguments, it is objective. You are simply making the assumption that I don't have that belief, for whatever reason. Pretty rude, frankly. I'm hardly a member of any political cult, I regularly advise against such nonsense.

@Atheos B. Sapien that’s unfortunate.. there’s even a drunk history Comedy Central video about it, that is more informative.. and not filled with made up nonsense like that one haha. I just wish this version wasn’t the one I’ve seen reactions to! I do like that people seem interested in the battle itself though. Baltimore gets quite a bad reputation, but it’s an underrated city in my opinion. And the real story is enough that they didn’t need to add to the number of ships, pretend like there were more casualties, ignore the land battle, make up the story about aiming for the flag, pretend people could hold up that massive flag during a bombardment, and as you said.. put religion into it.

You guys completely miss the point of this story, people who know this story (anyone who paid attention in 10th grade history in my case) knows how this played out. It's the emotion and the meaning behind it that make us proud. People who spout "right wing propaganda" and find the need to be vitriolic towards such things are just petty and hateful. It's fine to point out historical inaccuracies, but at the point of labeling the story we all know is just that, a story, as such. Those of you doing so just have your own agenda, wanting to quash something beautiful for your own twisted pleasure. As if there are not thousands of sensationalized stories throughout history on this earth we don't hold to such scrutiny.

i found this rebuttal/correction on the internet. 1. It was the War of 1812, not the Revolutionary War - there were 15 states, not 13 colonies. 2. There was no ultimatum to Baltimore, nor to the U.S., as this fellow describes it. 3. Key negotiated for the release of one man, Dr. Beanes. There was no brig full of U.S. prisoners. 4. It’s Fort McHenry, not “Henry.” The fort was named after James McHenry, a physician who was one of the foreign-born signers of the Constitution, who had assisted Generals Washington and Lafayette during the American Revolution, and who had served as Secretary of War to Presidents Washington and Adams. 5. Fort McHenry was a military institution, a fort defending Baltimore Harbor. It was not a refuge for women and children. 6. The nation would not have reverted to British rule had Fort McHenry fallen. 7. There were 50 ships, not hundreds. Most of them were rafts with guns on them. Baltimore Harbor is an arm of Chesapeake Bay; Fort McHenry is not on the ocean. 8. The battle started in daylight. 9. Bogus quote: George Washington never said “What sets the American Christian apart from all other people in this world is he will die on his feet before he will live on his knees.” Tough words. Spanish Civil War. Not George Washington. I particularly hate it when people make up stuff to put in the mouths of great men. Washington left his diaries and considerably more - we don’t have to make up inspiring stuff, and when we do, we get it wrong. 10. The battle was not over the flag; the British were trying to take Baltimore, one of America’s great ports. At this point, they rather needed to since the Baltimore militia had stunned and stopped the ground troops east of the city. There’s enough American bravery and pluck in this part of the story to merit no exaggerations. 11. To the best of our knowledge, the British did not specifically target the flag. 12. There were about 28 American casualties. Bodies of the dead were not used to hold up the flag pole - a 42 by 30 foot flag has to be on a well-anchored pole, not held up by a few dead bodies stacked around it.

Thank you SO VERY MUCH for doing this video. Our young people here are taught, through our schools, to hate America. Our history has, and is currently, being re-written. There was NOTHING about this that was offensive. It touched my heart that you gave it such respect. Most of our young people have NO respect for the flag. I couldn't help but cry through most of this, 'cause if we answered that question today..."Does that star-spangled banner yet wave," I'd have to say it is now almost completely down on the ground. America's enemies are on the verge of dismanteling our country; destroying it, completely. Very soon, I'm afraid, that flag will be completely in tatters; our Constitution has already been shredded. But thank you, young man, for doing us this honor. And it WAS an honor to watch this. Thank you so much. God bless you.

Can you imagine 8th graders working table saws? Lol The Anthem makes me tear up to this day. I love America and our history (good and bad) because it's shown over and over the resilience we have to overcome. Well, since you decided to politicize this.. American history is not being rewritten, it's finally being told. America has much to be proud of, but it has much to be ashamed of as well. And the Constitution? All I can say is thank God there are brave men and women of all political beliefs who held their oath to defend the Constitution higher than a desire to serve a petty, sociopathic wannabe tyrant. Listening to that phone call of Trump trying to bully Georgia officials into falsifying the vote made me sick to my stomach, and hearing that REPUBLICAN stand up to him and say "no" made me the proudest I've ever been to be American. You and the other right-wingers who've replied to you are on the wrong side of history and will be remembered as the people who wanted to destroy American democracy.

The actual Star Spangled Banner is displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. Ft. McHenry is now a National Shrine. At the visitor center you can watch a more properly historical presentation of this story. At the end of the presentation, a curtain opens and you can gaze at the courtyard and the original flagpole with the banner* still waving. The whole thing was quite moving. *A replica flag. Not as large as the original due to the age of the flagpole

@@jeffwilliams2828 solely focusing on racism makes it worse. I am not ignoring racism by focusing on the positive. if you only focus on the negative it crumbles. remove the bad parts of history, honor the tragedies, and honor the triumphs. Don't burn it all down.. No man is purely bad or good. There is gray area in all people minus a few. Francis Scott Key was a racist, but he was a great poet who wrote good verses. We have removed the bad verse because it is not good, but that doesn't mean cancel the entire song. You and I just fundamentally disagree on how to deal with the issues in our past. I believe in nuance in the management. I can see you do not. You only see bad while I choose to focus on the good while acknowledging the bad.
