I believe possum is regional (southern) slang. Ofen spelt 'possum, the animal is called an opossum and we northerners call them "O"possums, though we don't see them much. I don't think I've pronounced the "O" since moving to TX.

We have both alligators AND crocodiles in the U.S., both species can be found living together in the state of Florida. The American alligator has a much larger (and growing yearly) range, it can be found in a huge area of the Southern U.S., their population, once under threat, is now thriving.

Alligators are even coming back to some of their pre-colonial habitat such as southeastern Virginia and Southwestern Tennessee. Tennessee’s wildlife resource agency recognizes them as a returning animal while Virginia’s seems to not really want them there

Racoons are dangerously intelligent and will work together to get food..shelter and anything else they want to play with. If you google "racoons in deer cameras" you'll see them do all kinds of things... like riding a wild hog to reach a feeder.. and my personal favorite- 4 racoons standing on each other to reach a feeder. They are Beautiful charming and intelligent little guys.

As a Wyoming native, I'm glad the Jackalope got a shoutout. Jackalopes are very special (mythical) animals. Only the males have antlers, which gives them the libido of stags in rut. During the mating season (January through December), they will engage in displays of strength and daring, charging each other or anything else they see in order to impress the females (who can be distinguished from normal rabbit females because they watch the males out of the corner of their eyes). They have been known to charge bison, who get out of the way because they fill sorry for the little critters. Jackalope meat is inedible, and killing them supposedly brings a curse, so if you encounter one in the wild and it charges you, the best reaction is simply to imitate the bison and get out of the way. It won't care if it misses; it has done its duty, and will immediately try to find a female who might have been impressed by its daring. (And if you missed it, yes, it's not a real animal, but it's a hilariously wonderful mythical story)

Same for Snipe in Missouri. Nothing like a good Snipe hunt in the middle of Summer. It's a right of passage on camping trips. All you have to do is find a good long stick, and hit the ground around evening time. Best if you can find small holes in the ground since that is their favorite hiding place. Snipe are a unique animal similar to a small weasel with bird legs. Very fast, almost too quick to see with the human eye. They make a weird noise when they leave their hole. They also have sharp teeth so wear gloves, and bring a burlap sack as well. LOL

I think Laurence has done other interesting videos on animals also. The proper name is opossum, but I don't know anyone who says that. Most people just say 'possum. All of these animals, even the deer, can be dangerous if they feel threatened and it is best to leave them alone and appreciate them with some distance. Most of them will generally avoid people. Raccoons are cute but can be aggressive. You can smell a skunk around your house even when the windows and doors are closed and it just kind of hangs in your nose and makes your eyes water. You can smell it within a surprisingly large radius, and if sprayed, it's hard to get the smell out.

In the rare occasion someone keeps a skunk as a pet it's either male because only the females spray, or if it's female they get it deskunked by surgically removing the gland responsible. Cayotes are skittish creatures so are not dangerous by themselves, but a pack of cayotes is dangerous because they are braver as a group.

You can not imagine a skunk smell. You have to smell it to understand. It is almost unbreathable and you can’t get it off if the spray makes contact with you, your car, your dog etc. We just call them possum but our possums are not the same as the cute ones found elsewhere. My husband and I raised one when we were in high school after he ran over the mother taking me home from a date 😳 We have bald eagles in Oklahoma where I live. They nest along the Arkansas river and the Keystone Dam.

A friend on the neighboring farm saw one of her cats carried away by a bald eagle. Those suckers are huge. I knew a wildlife rehabber who had one that was injured and couldn't fly. He'd toss it a frozen roast and it would tear chunks off without waiting for it to thaw. Talons the size of your fist. Skunk smell can be detected literally for miles if the wind is right. There's nothing else that smells quite like it.

Raccoons are super curious and smart. They have pads on the side of their paws that they can use like opposable thumbs, so they can get into anything, open doors, turn knobs, open chests and coolers, unlatch gates and garbage bins. They are extremely cute and basically very friendly, except occasionally their attitude can switch quickly, especially with much older raccoons, or if you surprise them. And they live communally, so rabies is a problem as well. They like to wash their hands and their food before they eat. Generally, they keep their distance, but get curious about people sometimes.

We just call them Possums usually here in USA, at least where I am from Virginia (East Coast). They are actually really great animals and are the only marsupial in the USA! The species has stuck around for millions of years. They have a super short life span, and can birth up to 20 babies but with only room for 13. But they give birth several times a year. There are indeed another similar animal called “possum” which are found in Australia, NZ & China.. Oppssum/possum are interchangeable here in US in spelling and pronunciation. I used to live in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. The bald eagle migration is beautiful. No, they aren't tame. They are a raptor. You can train them just like any other raptor, but I think just watching them be wild is amazing! Another great video Lav!

Raccoons, Opossums, and Skunks make playful pets but they tend to get into everything, and pet skunks usually have their scent glands removed, surgically.

I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere already, but skunks don't smell unless they're actively spraying. Out in rural Ohio, you'll usually smell them a couple of times per year. When I was a teenager, I was walking through the field behind my house and suddenly I noticed a skunk about ten feet (3.3m) in front of me. It's probably the fastest I've ever come to a halt, and although it didn't seem all that threatened by me, I still went way around it. If they spray you, it's a helluva chore getting rid of the smell. You can't just hop in the shower like normal. I also encountered one as I was sitting on the porch steps one night. It came sauntering by the bottom of the stairs, rooting around in the grass for grubs. (they smell them in the ground and dig 'em up apparently) I carefully went back inside. I guess they only have a limited number of sprays before they can't do it anymore. Fortunately, the worst threat a skunk presents is an awful bad smell.

I'm dying with the jackalope! We actually had to make up a hybrid animal for one of my science classes in high school and give it habitat and explain it's physical attributes and I came up with a jackadillo. Which was a jackalope and armadillo mixed! Armadillos and platypus are my favourite animals. Please keep reacting to animal videos! Maybe even one about weird pets Americans have!

My favorite animal's here in the US, are the bald eagle, a very large bird when you see them up close. The dolphin, whale, and I love elephants.

I live in Coeur d' Alene (where he saw the Bald Eagles) and there are a lot of them here. If you come at the right time, I think November-ish, there is a trail next to the lake and you can see dozens of Bald Eagles. I went fishing recently and I saw two of them fighting over the lake.

We have a mating pair of Bald Eagle directly across the river from our property and we love to watch them hunt in the river. They are so big and strong that it just amazes me every time they snag a salmon and fly it back to their nest.

We have wild skunks in my neighborhood. Sometimes they spray other stray animals (or people), and the smell lingers for a while; it isn't pleasant, but it's not the worst thing in the world - it just smells like a skunk.

Skunks can be kept as pets if caught very young. You can have the scent glands removed so they wont spray anymore.

Growing up, the Bald Eagle was always on the Endangered Species list. Then, in 2008, I was on a family trip to Disney World's Animal Kingdom. We stopped to see the Flights of Fancy (bird show) and were in the front row. I am a US Navy vet and have always been very proud of our military and the symbol of America (the bald eagle). At the end of the bird show, a lady came out with a bald eagle on her arm, one that had been rescued with a broken wing and they were healing. It was the most beautiful bird I'd ever seen. Then she mentioned that the bald eagle was moved from the endangered species list to a watch list, meaning more were out there. I started crying. My group knew how much that meant to me and were all smiling at the news, even the 10 year old with us seemed to understand. Mom alter got me a bald eagle plushy to celebrate. This may not have impacted others the same way, but this was a proud moment in conservationism. If we can do that as a world, we can save so many other species that man endangered.

Bald eagles winter here in Arkansas, and yes, it is most common to see them around water. A couple of miles from here on the edge of town there’s road signs-near a river-asking people to please not park on the shoulder of the road to view the bald eagles. They have a popular recurring nesting spot there and people were causing a traffic hazard.

About the keeping skunks as pets thing. Some people do and typically they're indoor pets. A lot of people when they get one will have its sent gland removed so it cant spray anhthing but some dont bother removing it as skunks only use it if theyre scared.

Bald eagles are huge and powerful. They usually hunt fish, but have been known to fly off with small animals such as snakes, rabbits, cats, dogs, and even lambs. Here in Maine, they are quite populous along the many rivers and streams.
