These men are honestly unbelievable. They truly are amazing specimens of human beings. The fact that not only are these guys in the same sport but all playing at the same time shows how amazing the NFL is. Seeing guys like this play the sport is what is making me so excited about it. Who do you think is the biggest freak of nature in the league at the moment?

I am glad you took the time to research and enjoy this great sport. While from a global stand point it's not for everyone. I know "Soccer" takes the top spot globally, but to be a top 10 sport when it's really only supported by one country as their top sport, says a lot. If people were open minded about it like you are and saw what this sport brings, it would explode around the world. It has strategy, grit, hard hits, speed, power, a passionate fan base and from a college stand point, it has pageantry and history. As you have seen, there is nothing like it. Nothing. I am an American and have been around the world and lived in Europe for years (currently in Norway) and nothing beats the complete package that American football brings. I want the world to be on board and one day we can have an American Football World Cup, so we can smash other countries. lol

Before the NFL Draft, the league selects some of the top collegiate players who are entering their rookie seasons to the Combine. There's a variety of tests including 40 yard dash, agility tests, bench press, vertical jump, positional evaluations, and interviews with team coaches. Pretty much an athletic and skill showcase for new players to give teams an opportunity to figure out the kind of player or athlete they are before they make their way onto a team. Highly recommend checking out some of the best combine participants including John Ross, DK Metcalf, Byron Jones, etc.

Derrick Henry, by position, is probably the most unnaturally sized player compared to his contemporaries. As the video said, most linebackers are smaller than him. Half the defensive ends are smaller. Running backs are typically smaller with lower center of gravity and have speed. Even the bigger Running backs in history like Earl Campbell or Christian Okeye were massive but could not outrun defensive backs. Derrick Henry is the only back his size that could. And Bo Jackson.

Combine is basically a static collector for guys coming into the NFL Draft. If you get called to Combine, you’re in the draft. However, that doesn’t mean you’ll get picked. Guys like Jeff Demps, James Jett etc were Olympic sprinters. The Miami Dolphins currently have 4 former track runners on their offense RIGHT NOW. The 40 yard run is often used as a measuring stick for future NFL players. When a student gets drafted out of college to go to the NFL, the 40 yard run measurement is a big factor in deciding which players teams want. To put into perspective to you as a Brit, the 4.39 speed means that he is running TEN (10) meters per second. He is almost going 36 kilometers per hour. That is like a car in second gear! (Edit). 8:30. The combine for college/university students tests speed, maneuverability (obstacle course to run around left to right), foot speed through a ropes course, jump height, raw power of hitting obstacle dummies, & if you are a quarterback there will be pass accuracy & distance passing.

There was an NFL coach in the early days of pro football named Paul Brown. He watched film to determine how far a player would run on an average play and came up with a distance of 40 yards. That is why the 40 yard dash is the standard for measuring speed in football. Paul Brown is an interesting innovative coach. He founded the Cleveland Browns and the team is named after him. After this he helped found the Cincinnati Bengals. He also reintegrated the NFL (there were black players in the very early days but then they were banned until Brown brought in Bill Willis).

40 yard dash is a general test of speed for football players. Most players take an official 40-yard time during the combine, which is an official event where college football players take a series of physical tests in hopes of being drafted by a team in the upcoming draft. Both the combine and especially the draft have become pretty big events in recent years. In addition to the 40 yard dash, players also do various jumping, agility, strength and skills tests at the combine. Lots of high school players get their 40s tested and some college players opt not to test at the combine and do it at their school’s pro-day (basically where their college hosts its own combine-like event for their own athletes) but these 40s are taken with a pinch of salt because they’re usually faster than the combine’s laser-timed 40 yard dash, since the school’s themselves would obviously like to bump up the testing numbers of their own athletes to make them look better. For the 40 yard dash, the times are: 4.20-4.30 seconds is elite speed 4.40-4.50 is great/good speed 4.60-4.80 can pretty good for bigger positions like tight ends or linebackers but for running backs, receivers or defensive backs it’s pretty bad. Anything above 5 seconds is pretty slow unless you’re an offensive/defensive lineman where that’s about as expected.

Very interesting Alex, thanks very much for the rundown, it is great to get a better understanding of the combine and the importance of the '40 yard dash'. I am a soccer fan and there are always arguments about who is the quickest in teams and leagues but there is nothing like this to get a real gauge and accurate figure for it. Thanks very much for the breakdown of the times and ratings too. That makes perfect sense and will allow me to have more context when I see the figure mentioned for players in any future videos. @Anastas1786
@Anastas1786 Жыл бұрын
When you're being considered for a spot on a college or professional football team, your 40-yard dash record is one of the more important things they look at. A record of 4.5 seconds or less is ideal, since it means that you can be expected to take off from the line of scrimmage the instant the ball is kicked and be in position to catch it when it comes down. Some coach in the mid-1940s apparently did the math and figured that an average punt travels about 40 yards in about 4.5 seconds, so he started timing his players' 40-yard dashes instead of the then-standard 100-yard dashes, figuring that a punt's distance was a more useful, practical measurement than the length of the whole field. In a bull rush, a defensive player rushes straight at an offensive player... well... like a _bull._ They use both their arms and all their speed and brute strength to simply _heave_ the offense out of the way or to the ground, as appropriate. NFL players mostly enter the League via the Draft. College football players (or any non-NFL football player at least three years out of high school, technically, but in practice most players that are actually chosen have played some college football) submit themselves for the Draft, and then each NFL team picks new members from the resulting pool of names. The teams make their decisions on the advice of their scouts, who attend lots of college games and watch tons of sports news looking for talent. _The NFL Scouting Combine_ is a pre-Draft event that basically centralizes things a bit. Instead of just hoping that the scouts from your favorite team just _happen_ to visit your school on a good game night for you, you and the rest of the best-of-the-best college players attend _(by invitation only!)_ the Combine, where a whole _bunch_ of the scouts and coaches and managers attend to conduct interviews and put you through a battery of physical and mental exams to assess your suitability.

That is absolutely brilliant information and background mate, thank you so much for the explanation. This is why I love making these videos and reading the comments, for comments like this where I learn so much not just about the video but about the history of the sport. Great stuff. It makes perfect sense for the distance to be 40 yards when you put it like that but to know they also did the math to work out the exact distance makes it even more interesting. I love how the bull rush is named in such a literal fashion. I didn't even think about that.

A 48 inch box jump isn't the same as a 48 inch vertical. In a box jump you can bend your knees and lift your legs to get up on the box. In a vertical leap test, you reach up as high as you can while grounded and touch a marker then you jump as high as you can and touch the highest marker you can while in the air and then the difference between the two markers is your vertical.

If you’re curious, the 40 yard dash is the length that it is because of punts. It’s the average-length that they would wind up going (at the time of it’s induction into testing) & the quicker you could get to the ball on the punt, the better the odds that it isn’t returned for long distance. Also to answer your question, a “bull rush” is the most straightforward way for a defensive lineman to beat an offensive lineman. It’s an “I’m more powerful than you, so I’m going to overpower you by driving you straight backwards” statement that’s impossible to Stop if you’re significantly weaker

Dude, I'm a Jacksonville Jaguars fan and they aren't joking about Derek Henry. Go watch the highlights from last weekend's game between the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars. There's a play with 22 seconds left in the first quarter where Derek Henry moves the _entire Jacksonville defense_ an extra 5 yards after they've hit him. He does have some help from his players but they push the entire Jags defense another 5 yards down the field after he's been hit the first time. It looks like a legit rugby scrum. A massive pile of about 8 guys and Henry in the middle and it surges forward. If you watch close, one of the Jags players is lifted off his feet entirely while they push the pile forward. It's insane. It's alright, though, because the Jags won the game. You pretty much nailed it. The combine is where the pro scouts can evaluate college players before the draft. They test them every way you can imagine from running, jumping, and weight lifting to position specific skills. It's televised and I'm sure you can find footage of it The 40 times are just how fast you can run 40 yards - aka the 40 yard dash. For context, the fastest each year is around 4.2 seconds, anywhere from 4.24 to 4.28 seconds seems to be the fastest every year. So, for example, Metcalf's 4.3 40 is pushing close to the fastest times.

So, the Combine is the Pre-Draft "camp", where scouts from the teams evaluate the current draft class at a variety of physical stats and challenges, like 40 yrd dash, flat footed high jump, weight lifting, things of that nature and then they take those evaluations back to their teams and they set up their draft strategies. If you have a "bad" combine, it affects your draft position. If you have a good combine it sends your "draft stock" higher. You need to see the play where DK Metcalf ran down the Budda Baker interception. Tyreek Hill is fast, but DK *might* be faster.

Larry allen is an old school monster and freak of nature. Look up video of larry allen chasing a guy down after an interception. He holds the record for most bench press reps at 225 with 43 reps making him the strongest man in league history. He was absolutely enourmous and was athletic enough to literally chase down linebackers and dbs half his size

The NFL playoffs start in about month, I hope you get a chance watch some high lights, or maybe react to the high lights. We would love that. As for a freak of nature video, go back to 2012 Running back Adrian Peterson's MVP year, a year after tearing his ACL to winning MVP in a passing league was amazing. Or any highlight video if his.

I will definitely do some highlights reactions mate. I have been wanting to do them actually for a while but I am unsure if there are any copyright issues (I just don't want to get any strikes). I will maybe do one next weekend as a tester and see how it goes but I am really looking forward to the playoffs. Ok thanks for the suggestion mate, will check out Adrian Peterson too. Thanks

College playoffs and bowl games are coming up soon too. Love to see the reactions to those if its legal. I am sure it is. I have watched videos of people doing it. Maybe if you edit it some. idk

I always say America would have a couple world cups under their belt if our best athletes grew up playing soccer
@RMgolf

I do not wish to be controversial here but I’m just stating what is the truth about American culture. We do not allocate our best athletes to soccer (British football), kids growing up who are bigger, faster, stronger almost unanimously play American football. This is why on the world stage we do not compete in men’s soccer. We have our athletes playing American football. If our youth grew up knowing serious money and fame comes from playing soccer we would have players like tyreek hill playing soccer and there just wouldn’t be much the world could do against that kind of speed and agility.

Thanks Paul. That makes perfect sense and it is interesting that they test exactly that figure. I think in a lot of other sports they just test 100m sprints and that doesn't give a true gauge of how effect the sprint would be in the relative sport. But American Football seems to have it exact. I like that attention to detail

As far as literally a freak of nature I think Derrick Henry and DK Metcalf are probably the biggest right now simply because its conventional for their respective positions to be much shorter and lighter yet they are both stronger, taller, bigger, and faster than most people playing their positions

The forty yard dash is the yardstick by which American football speed is measured. The distance was settled upon because it is more or less the average length of a punt. Therefore, the speed with which a player can close that distance is valuable. In broader terms, American football relies upon short, sudden, explosive acceleration. The forty years dash is an excellent barometer of an athlete's capacity to reach full flight within the average span of a play. For clarification, the quickest NFL 40 times coincide with the rate of acceleration of the most elite speed athletes in the world. Bo Jackson ran the 40 in 4.12 seconds. Usain Bolt covered that same distance in 4.18 seconds when he ran his world record 100 meter dash. There are many who believe a player's 40 time is an overvalued metric. But, it does serve as a decent benchmark.
@mertsalih
@mertsalih Жыл бұрын
Wow that is amazing information, thanks very much. I think it is a perfectly suitable metric for American Football and is very relevant to the sport. I also like how it is easy to compare players throughout the league and organise them by position, etc. I will need to do a deep dive into the stats and check out the rest of the league too. Very interesting
@kentgrady9226
@kentgrady9226 Жыл бұрын
@@mertsalih In the most general of terms, any 40 yard dash time under 4.6 is very, very quick (by layman's standards). At the NFL level, running backs should be under 4.5. Wide receivers should be under 4.4. There are other players of other positions, who are capable of such times (as the video describes), but they are very rare - even in the NFL. Footballers (as you and I would understand them) are astonishing athletes.... able to run for days, transition from standing, to trotting, to sprint, brilliant footwork and body control, etc. But, for raw explosiveness and agility, American football players are the pinnacle.

A guy from my hometown was my sentimental favorite freak, although he was a knucklehead who didn’t have a great NFL career. Matt Jones from Arkansas was a 6-foot-7, 240 pound college quarterback who went to the combine. People knew he could run but he was so tall and big they assumed he’d run maybe 4.6. Instead he blazed out a 4.38. That may well be the fastest combine speed ever for a 6-7 guy (to add to the surprise, to be blunt, he’s as white as milk.) Not sure but he must be close. He got drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He couldn’t pass well enough to be an NFL QB, so they tried to make him a wide receiver. He never panned out that well and had some drug and alcohol problems. Finally after a few years he was finally playing well and finished the season strong. But in the off-season he got in trouble with the law and that was the end of his career.
@mertsalih

Wow great insight into Matt Jones' career, thanks very much for that mate, it is very interesting to read and hear about a player that I would probably otherwise not have heard about. That is such a shame that it never worked out for him, especially after putting up such a great sprint time in his combine. I hope he is doing better in his personal life now.

When they're saying they have 4.5 in the 40 (for instance)... it is timing his speed in the set distance of 40 yards (36.6 meters). So 4.4 in the 40 means he runs 36.6 meters in 4.4 seconds.

40 is the basic metric to gauge NFL player speed, because it's a good combination of explosiveness and full stride speed. However, it's not as important as fans and media make it out to be. The NFL isn't a track meet, and effective speed is far more important. It's really only valuable at the extremes. A 5.0 is very slow, a 4.2 is very fast. Anything in between is position dependent. George Kittle is much faster than 4.5 would indicate, and he plays a position at which 4.7 is average.

I'm sure people in the comments would be happy to give suggestions of games that might be typical & entertaining that you could give a try, and then come to an informed decision on whether it's for you.
