For you youngsters, the the "phone" is depicting a phone booth (phone box). Phone booths were rectangular boxes, usually made of glass on all four sides and they had a door. They were for the purpose of having privacy when you were on the phone. Clark Kent went into phone booths and emerged as Superman.

@James He could also be called the conductor. If you looked around the edges of the field there is at least one more positioned directly opposite, across the field from the main conductor. In this video, I counted three in total, with possibly a fourth out of the camera site lines. The reason for the multiple conductors is simple. They allow a bandsman to be able to spot one at any point during the performance to make sure they are all playing in tempo. The Drum Major in most bands also provide this service via the use of his mace. Ohio State really likes for their Drum Major to primp, prance, strut and parade around to give their performances a bit more “show” for the audience. Personally, I think it distracts from the band’s overall presentation and performance.

TBDBITL!!! The Best Damn Band In The Land. :) The guy in the middle of the field is the Band Drum Major. The man on the sideline is the Director. The Drum major did not drop the baton. He bounces it of the ground then catches it all in time with the music. The Drum Major also leads the band in Script to spell Ohio at the pregame show. The Band works up a show for each game. It is different every week as far as I know. This game is a big rival game like Celtic and Rangers in the UK. A lot of people go to the games to see the band as well as the American football game. Most games are sold out. Very difficult to get tickets unless you are part of the alumni that has a connection. OSU is one of the best universities in the country. This is what I picked up as a Brit living in the states for a while.

I'm from Ohio but did not go to Ohio State. Tickets to one of their football games are easily $100/person/game. I went to a game once and it was crazy. I'm sure there's not a video but the University of Cincinnati is a couple hours from there - they had a routine a few years ago that incorporated the cheerleaders which was really cool. Some of the Ohio high school bands might not be up to this level but there's a great pipeline of talent.

I was in the Cincinnati band. The irony is the last few weeks where Cincinnati was ranked ahead of Ohio state has not happened since Luke Fickell (Cincinnati's current head coach) was the head coach at Ohio state.

You can watch quality marching band "half time shows" at almost any highschool or college game, this is an American tradition that geeks aspire to be apart of and give it their 110%. I was in my highschool one and it was an absolute blast to put on

Yep. Four years in high school, and I spent my freshman year as a proud Marching Maroon of Eastern Kentucky University (the requirements of my Major prevented any participation past my first year there).

TBDBITL!!! In Columbus the band is revered & second only to the football team. There's a number of these that are really good, but the Hollywood blockbuster was one of, if not the best IMHO. Some are better than others, but what's impressive is that they learn a new one for every home game (they did "Rush" today) plus 1-2 away games, as well as the B1G Ten Championship and any bowl/College Football Playoff games they make. They made a documentary that's about 2 hours long following them through the 2018 season that was pretty neat.

The term you're looking for is "Conductor". Actually there are 6 of them on ladders on the sideline. The Main Conductor is in the middle on the 50 yard line. Yes, they do a halftime performance every 2 weeks at home games. Imagine not only having to learn the music but the formations as well - in 2 weeks - and having to go to regular classes with tests and papers to write. These band members are are the Best of the Best and deserve the title Best Damn Band in the Land!

They train since 6th grade. Starting in High School at grade 9 they practice marching band. My high school was won many state competitions through the years. The band practices every day in summer break from 8am until 6pm. Sometimes longer. It is absolutely more than a full time job. It’s insane how much they practice but it is required to learn the music and their steps/positions

Marching band is in incredible experience. We usually start around high-school here in the US (14-18 age). I couldn't do it these days because of age, but my time doing it was so goddamn fun. Since you're performing on a football/handegg field, it's constantly checking how many inches you are from the marks to stay in formation, while playing the music that you've memorized. There is also a certain way you have to walk (It's calling "rolling your step", in that you go heel to toe as smoooooth as possible. that you have to learn). If you don't, the sound from your instrument gets "bumps" and a bad sound, it's like a trombone doing a slide, but not a trombone or intentional. One person in the band does that, and either someone else notices it and then you have everyone out of sync; or at best, that one person is off and it ruins everything anyway. Marching band is hard, incredibly impressive, and fun.

About 30 years ago OSU Music Department grasped on to computer driven marching packages and have taken them to heights no one else in the world has. The are the best marching band in world bar none. They are the World Class. The bands people compete every week to maintain their positions as the absolute best. Incomparable! I love watching them during halftime shows. Watch the video of the Micheal Jackson tribute halftime show. It was amazing I remember going there. Don't know if you noticed but... before Superman saves the falling building, he backs up in a 'phonebooth' .... notice the red ribbon with the word 'phone' on it to show that Clark Kent goes into the phone booth to change into Superman. Haven't heard any reactor mention it. The second, Lord of the Rings and the Eye of Sauran. The third, Harry Potter (his inials and the 'Z' scar) and the Quidditch game (with the Golden Snitch that Harry must catch) flying around the field until Harry catches it. Then Jurassic Park with the T-Rex eating the people. (BTW, there has always been a huge competition between Michigan and Ohio and the person that the T-Rex goes to eat, is a person wearing the Michigan jersey). Then Pirates of the Caribbean with the Ohio ship sinking the Michigan ship (two rivals in football). This is amazing.

PS: I’ll explain how the OSU marching band works. They get music and new marching drill on Monday. They rehearse 4:10-6pm Monday through Friday. Friday they do final run through and music checks. Every bit of music gets memorized. Saturday is the game. Away Gabe’s they typically repeat a show, otherwise they do a new pregame, halftime and used to do a postgame show every home game. They are called TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land) for a reason. Fail three music checks on Friday and get kicked out. The history of this band includes creating marching band as we now know it; prior was just parade style marching bands. Look up the Horse running show, Michael Jackson show, any Script Ohio and the history. It’s amazing. Then check out the Top Gun show. Tom Cruise actually is providing a private viewing for the band in Columbus, Ohio spring of 2022 and gave them tee shirts. This was the hardest job I ever had, being a student of this band.

Beesley, I forget what the halftime show was when I saw this comment, but the band members would get a substantial college scholarship for being in the band, but worked for it, in that there are daily 2-hour practices, plus carrying a full course load.

No they don't. Until very recently Band members received absolutely no financial support, and paid to be in the Band, since it counts as a 3-hour college course. Some years ago the University started a campaign, headed by Jack Nicklaus and his wife, to raise money to support Band members, and they now get a small scholarship for the autumn semester, but nothing like the actual cost of tuition and board at Ohio State. They do practice every day, and have to memorise the drill and music (they don't carry music on the field) for a new show for every home game.

I did marching band in high school and it was and still is the most fun thing I have done. If you like this, I would suggest reacting to DCI (Drum Corps International) They are basically marching bands, but on a whole other level. My favorite clip would have to be the Blue Devils Felliniesque in 2014. They hold the record for the highest score ever awarded in DCI.

The start is the Michigan band leaving the field after their performance, I think. As the 'Pirates' segment demonstrated, Michigan was the opponent school in that day's game. The marching band stadium show of this sort is a truly American art form, quirky as it is.

And to your question about if they do this every home game, yes they do. Not only that, they have a new show for each game, so they have to learn these in just a week or two.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this but university marching bands perform a new show for every home game, so that means it takes them 1-2 weeks to learn a whole new show - music and drill coordinates. In high school, we only learned one show for the whole season.

There are a lot of great marching bands in college, but among the big schools, Ohio State's is almost universally recognized as the best for the creative formations and shows. The conductor doesn't tell band/orchestra members what pitch to play, that's written on the page or memorized. They're only there to keep time, and queue entrances and such. Also, for a marching band, it's usually a few members of the band taking that job, and they're called "drum majors". You should find a video of Bands of America competitions to watch. These (especially Grand Nationals) are some of the best high school marching bands in the country, and they absolutely take the cake when it comes to putting on a show.

Beesley, rats, I did it again--I posted before I should have done so. The previous band was from the opposing team, and the "head guy" is called the drum major, who's like a roving conductor, and like a symphony conductor, his 'stick' is a baton. Before the movies came out on Superman, it was a TV show, and Clark Kent changed into Superman in the nearest phone booth. Also featured were 1 I didn't recognize, "Harry Potter (the wings)", 'Jurassic Park' (@ 11:14, the dinosaur ate someone dressed as an opposing team membere, and at 11:26, he spit out his helmet), and 'Pirates of the Caribbean".

Lord of the Rings is the one you didn't recognize- they made the ring, and then the Eye of Sauron (key symbols from the series if you're not familiar with it)

I was in marching band in high school and I'm telling you the amount of practice we had to endure is NOTHING like college level. So much hard work we never see cause the comintaroes have to talk.
