4:25 The band normally comes out during Half Time which is a break between the 1st and 2nd half of the game for the players and the fans. The band comes out to give a 'show' to everyone while the fans get their food, drinks, and wait until the beginning of the 2nd half of the game starts after Half Time. We normally practice the music in the band hall until we get that down by heart before practicing our movements on the field. Also, the band begins practice during the summer and has 'charts' which show the football field (or parking lot for when I was practicing in band). These charts would have dots on them where you are supposed to be at every measure or so, or just were big pieces are (depends on the music/performance/director). We go through each section of the performance over and over and over again until we are perfectly in line, on time, and in sync. You can spend hours out on the field practicing the same section over and over again. If you don't practice that much, you are liable to miss your steps, placement, or even step/fall on someone. One person out of place can ruin the whole picture so we need to have it drilled into our heads until it becomes muscle memory. (P.S sorry for the long rant)

Texas band director here. Glad you enjoyed the show. The band works really hard to provide halftime shows. These are musician athletes. A lot of work on the instrument and a ton of time learning drill in various weather conditions really gets them in shape. Marching band is not for the lazy. Band students are awesome people. Their level of commitment is extremely high and their payout is having a great performance. That appreciation from the audience or the ratings from a band contest is second to none. Ohio State is a great university band program. There is a ton of tradition and pride there. When you come to the U.S. you need to go to a college football game (if it is in the Fall when you visit). The whole experience is awesome.

I am now 63 years old, but when I was in high school I was fortunate enough to be the trumpet soloist from 1974 - 1977. I attended a small high school in North Carolina, USA. Our band consisted of about 100 musicians plus about 30 drill team members. In this video, the statement was made about this being a whole other sport. From what I experienced, there was not one single member of the band that could play football, but I dare to say that there was not one single football player that could do what we did. During marching season, we practiced after school, Monday through Thursday for 3:30 to 7:00. We then performed a pregame and half-time show at a Football game every Friday night, then did parades and competitions on Saturdays. In my opinion, marching band members are just as much athletes as the football players. We were just trained in a different sport.

Also wanted to add, most marching bands have set sheets that show the placement of each band member for each set. Each person has a unique number on the field. We use the yard lines, hash marks, and sidelines to mark off our exact location. Between each set is a certain number of counts that tell the band member how many steps to take to get to their next set, and these counts correlate with the counts in the music. The standard step size is called “8-5” because we take 8 steps in 5 yards, but of course that is adjusted for each set and show, depending on your spot.

Marching bands are huge in the US. Students in 5 grade pick their instrument and learn how to play it. It’s great, gets them involved in school, teaches them music, all my kids were in band. In smaller high schools, at half time when the band plays, football players in their uniforms, and cheerleaders abandon that sport, join the band to perform. It’s very cool. By high school they are marching. Then they continue on at college. The leader of the band is called the DRUM MAJOR. My husband was the drum major of his high school band. OSU is tops in this. Michigan and Ohio State are a huge rivalry. Coaches can get fired if they lose this game. Lol

The marching band comes in during half-time, the 12 minute break in the middle of the game. For the Super bowl they have a half time show with a celebrity collaboration instead.. Marching band was awesome when I did it, and you get multiple maps per formation and a number, on the bottom of the map, it has the number of steps your supposed to take to transition and where in the music that transition is. You learn the spots and music separately, and then put them all together. That was the real reason for band camp, to give people a chance to learn everything before school and football started. Including how to march properly.

My dad was a professor at Ohio State and we were lucky enough to have faculty seats near the 50-yard line. Every home game they would introduce a new show for the halftime. I know they've done Star Wars, but they're so incredible at every performance it boggles the mind!

I’ve been to over a hundred of them, used to have season tickets to OSU football and the band performed every halftime at home games, you should check out their skull sessions which they do before the games

I have a few friends that went to OSU just for the marching band, one who was an alternate and they both LOVED it. Most schools have marching bands, and MANY do amazing performances BUT nobody does anything close to this.

The band attracts potential students from all over and there are auditions and grueling Summer camp practices with a lot of running, exercises, marching, learning formations, learning music and on-going practices. They are top notch and probably the best in the top five university marching bands in the USA today.

I don't post here often, but I can say, without a doubt, that I miss my time in high school band. Remembering all of the parades and field shows that I have participated in, not to mention all of the jazz music from swing to dixieland, and formal concerts against other schools just leaves me amazed that I was able to put all of my heart into it to do the best that I could to make people cheer, clap, and even dance. What a great time.

We definitely love our marching bands in the US. Kids usually start playing in grade 5 or 6 in school and continue on through middle school, high school and then college. It becomes more than just a hobby. Musicians dedicate hours upon hours of practice time per week. I am 50 years old now and have to say it was the best time of my entire life.

I’ve seen this band live multiple times in a regular season ticket holder. I suggest watching the ramp entrance it’s insane.

Brings back good memories. My father was the director of a large university marching band (among other things) - so I literally grew up in a marching band. He had the honor of directing the first marching band ever to perform on TV at an NFL game (late 60's early 70's?) and the first collegiate marching band to go and perform and tour through Europe (multiple times). And I was lucky enough to be there to go along for the ride.

I attended LSU (Louisiana State University), where we have the (Grammy-nominated) Golden Band from Tigerland. These types of performances are done during halftime by the band of the home team -- so they must prepare at least 5 to 8 unique performances each year, which are performed in all kinds of weather (scorching heat to freezing cold, rain, snow, etc.) during football season -- between the beginning of September and end of November. Then there are competitions they participate in outside of these football game performances. College marching bands are MAJOR!🎉

I am an "Old Guy" who was born and raised about 30 miles from that stadium. Have been to a couple of OSU football games and, yes, it's a wild crowd. "-) You guys caught on to what they were "building" way before I did. :-) I loved it too. Yes, I'm a "Buckeye!." Big rivalry between OSU and Michigan - glad to see Michigan's boat being sunk. Glad you liked it all. Would love to visit New Zealand. I hear it's a great part of the world. p.s. My brother is a grad of OSU. p.p.s. Enrollment at OSU for 2023 is about 66,000 undergraduate students.

Former band kid here. Marching band in high school and college. Ohio state is one of the top, if not the top band in the country so you guys picked a great one to watch. If memory serves me correctly, Ohio state will do multiple shows in a season so they learn drill (the movement) and the music incredibly quickly! And the leader is called the drum major and they often do tricks and special salutes that can be interesting to watch too!!

I grew up about 10 minutes from the stadium and spent many Saturday's at Ohio Stadium watching my Buckeyes play football, During halftime people didn't leave their seats because we love our marching band as much as the football team. There is an indescribable electricity that they generate when they play and it gives you goosebumps when you see them in person. Still love my Ohio State football and the Best Damn Band in the Land.

Ooo this one hit close to home o loved watching your reactions! I grew up right by OSU so im very familiar with the OSU marching band, it’s definitely a big part of every game. I laughed when she asked if sinking the ship was aggressive. Ohio states fan are serious about their fandom, we’re known to go a bit wild sometimes and OSU vs Michigan is the big rival game so this is very on brand for us. We literally dont use the letter M the week we play ❌ichigan😂 Marching band really is its own sport, my high school had one that had like 100 kids and was pretty good. They would even travel for marching band competitions separate from football. Most colleges have a marching band. Maybe im bias but OSU is one of the best lol. Oh and blockbuster is where ppl would get videos from before netflix and all the online streaming services came around. Its dead now, hence why this is a tribute. But it still lives on in a lot of ppls memory.

Love your reaction and love marching bands. Ohio State is the best. They have several legendary half time shows. I was in high school marching band in New Jersey and college marching band (University of Delaware.) Lots of skill and practice involved, especially at this level. Other great college bands (with different styles) are the Texas A&M Marching Band. And, the Southern University Marching band -- their show at LSU this past season was amazing.

I still remember how much work went into marching band over a decade later. We had to memorize the music in a week then you spent several hours a day practicing the steps on the field. You get a list of steps for each formation. The hardest bit for me was keeping up the tempo of the music while marching double quick as you passed through the brass. I hope your family watches the other marching videos from OSU!

I have been to the stadium for these shows. The football team is usually very good, but the band is on a whole different level. They do several different shows every fall…each unique and incredible. Lately, they have even featured hundreds of drones flying in formation with an incredible light show as well. Marching Bands are celebrated in high schools and colleges across the country, but The Buckeyes are truly TBDBiTL

These marching bands take their performances very seriously and practice SOOOOO much to make their formations. My old high school band/orchestra teacher had been the drum major at OU, which is a BIG marching band and has an incredible reputation like this one. He was very strict with the marching band at my high school.
