RE: Behind the scenes: The SEAL team leader of this mission was Justin K. Sheffield. He was the one to pick Jessica up & RUN over a mile carrying her! *He wrote a book called MOB VI that gives in depth details regarding this mission.* A MUST read! The details are insane. --- A few details are: the SEALs jumped from their plane during a Sandstorm! Several of the SEALS were dragged hundreds of feet in the awful wind. 2. They also had to wear EXTRA plates of Kevlar protection because they were sure the bandits had AK47s, RPG’s, etc.. so they were EACH weighed down with approx 80 pounds of equipment! (Way more than normal) And they still had to walk/jog miles on land to get to her with all this extra weight , plus carry her!)

The Danish man said his country doesn't have a policy of rescuing it's citizens. He was saying that he was lucky to be with an American because America will rescue its citizens.
@Froehlich07

True it's what he said... But, what they leave out is as soon as a shipping company takes contracts outside of Europe, they have to follow the contract that the sailors agree with when they go on these "trips". It isn't the Danish military saying "naaah you're on your own". The EU is has to follow the laws that the contracts sets, sadly enough in these cases. Where the US has far more reach outside and can actually do something. What was great in this case.

US Army Combat Veteran here. I was based in Djibouti Africa 2012-2013. I remember this mission well. I was a member of ERF (Embassy Response Force). This unit was made after Bengazi. Our job was to fly in and rescue US Embassy personnel if the Embassy was under attack and needed to be evacuated. They would leave in the helicopter we brought. We would stay. You asked how someone could risk everything for someone that they don't even know. Simple, really. If my wife or kids were in trouble and needed rescue, I hope someone would stop at nothing to bring them home safely. I am out of the Army now. I am a Volunteer Firefighter in my hometown. Still saving lives.

Great reaction. What a lot of people don't realize is that it is not about the money when the USA refuses to pay terrorist ransoms. This mission to rescue her was reported to have cost in excess of $28 million and as much as $40 million. Between the SEALs who trained for weeks for the mission, spy satellites that were redirected to locate and track the movements of the bandit camps, the logistics to have all the military assets in place to support a mission like that, it all adds up to insane amounts of money that most nations would not consider spending to rescue hundreds of hostages much less two aid workers, of whom only one is an American. It wasn't even motivated by politics either because Obama never even mentioned the successful rescue in the biggest speech of the year a few hours later.

The total mission cost was declassified as being $110 million. The kidnapers asked for $45 million but the U.S. does not negotiate with Terrorist. If $45 million was paid there was no guarantee she would be released unharmed. Besides an example needed to be made for anyone planning to kidnap Americans of the consequences.

It’s the sound of BDU’s in motion. That thick camouflage material scraping against itself at the inseams as soldiers limbs move swiftly inside in. When the quick swishing suddenly stops, it means there’s a target acquired and aimed at. I suggest watching the movie Tears Of The Sun with Bruce Willis. His team goes into Africa to rescue Christian Aid Workers. It shows you an operation from the perspective of the SEALs team.

The deeper insight that is often missed, is the SEALs dedication level to directive. This is presented from a wonderful documentary emotional perspective... The SEALs weren't that dedicated because she was young, sick, and a victim. They are ALWAYS that dedicated to their mission's prime directive! 😮 No matter what it is.... and THAT is what is spooky. Young men that "see" their bodies as tools to complete the objective firstly.

I just looked up Justin Sheffield, the leader of the operation that rescued them on his publisher's site. Wow. "Most of the missions that he has conducted are still classified and clandestine. The most notable mission that has been declassified and published was the raid in Somalia that led to the hostage rescue of a female American citizen, and a Danish citizen. Senior Chief Sheffield was the team leader who planned the raid and led the jump, which has turned out to be the most difficult operation conducted by Seal Team Six to this day. He was the member of the unit who, after killing several of the hostage-takers, jumped on, protected with his body, and then picked up and carried to safety the American Hostage."

From other videos I've seen on this rescue, Jessica later learned that the charity she was working for were warned of the possible kidnapping, but they never told her. They told Paul, her Danish coworker, but not her. Turns out that the security detail they had used many times was involved in the kidnapping and were paid off by the bandits. Maybe this is why they had everything in place, like the phone numbers blocked, ahead of time. Needless to say, she was very upset and never went back. Who could blame her. Awesome story though and a warning to others thinking of kidnapping Americans. America is probably the only country that would have done this.

Anywhere in the world, if harm is brought to an American, our elite military units (Seals, Rangers, Special Forces) will answer the call to rescue them. For Americans, that harmed person represents our daughter/son, sister/brother, wife/husband, mother/father, and we will not let any of this world's shitheads harm them. I firmly believe this is an innate charactertistic of Americans. I am touched by your emotional reaction to the rescue of Jessica by Seal Team 6. When I was a kid my dad was in the Navy, us military kids are called Navy Brats, Army Brats, etc.. Anyway, my dad had a friend who was a Seal. To look at him you would think he was the youth group pastor at the local church. You would never guess he was a trained, and very efficient, hostage "negotiator". Never ever judge a book by its cover.

It was very touching to see your reaction to this heroic rescue. Byw a New Moon happens once a month regularly. It is when there is no light on the moon that is why it is so dark outside. No reflection of sunlight off of the moon like the rest of the month.

I could hold the tears for a while but just like you could no longer. As you said, the bravery of the Seals and also that of Jessica and her colleague is undescribable. Nowadays if a South African would befall the same fate, well we also shall need the American Seals. No such training here. Appreciate you. Greetings from South Africa

I can’t speak for all Military personnel/veterans, and some of them may disagree, but that selflessness is engrained into you as a Soldier. It starts in Basic with your “Battle Buddy”, in permanent duty station it becomes the Unit, and by extension Americans. In a rescue operation the life of the hostage/hostages is more valuable than the lives of the team

Here is a link to a pod cast that was done 10 years or so after the rescue. It is an interview with Jessica and one of the commanders that was involved with the rescue. It sheds some light on the behind the scenes planning. Very interesting to hear some of the details from that side. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqeYkIuZjtx2qrM In a different interview she talks about how thankful she is that none of the rescuers were injured or killed during the mission as she didn't know how she would have ben able to cope with that. She talks a lot about surviving survival and dealing with stuff after the rescue.

Operational costs to the US for this rescue was over 100 million dollars, NOT a criticism, just a demonstration of what America will do to bring our sister home. Not as well known is that my USAF Para Rescue (PJ's) jumped with the Seals to give medical aid and fight if necessary. At one point she was afraid that the bandits would come for her again, a Seal told her, "We are Seal Team 6, we will kill anyone that tries to harm you". As a military vet and 30-year LE and knowing SecOps members this kind of mission is the kind of thing these guys live for!

How could it cost 100 million? They build new planes and helicopters for this mission
@sulaco2122

@@HBC423 Operational costs include everything from pay scales, to infrastructure costs, costs of transport maintenance, equipment in trans national movement, costs of plane and trucks etc. Thinks of multi millions person operations on a transnational theater of operations. Soup to nuts globally.

@@HBC423 Yr not getting it, the cost is calculated based on the entire global infrastructure use and installation costs, it's not about a ship or a plane its the entire military structure and what it costs to run it hour by hour. Thats how operational costs are calculated.
