"Millions in defense before a cent in tribute" is why it is very unwise for terrorists and tin pot dictators to kidnap American citizens and hold them for ransom. It may not happen over night and it may cost more blood and treasure than lives rescued and ransom denied but we don't negotiate with terrorists.

@@GOTGames This seems an apt place to mention that Jefferson saw it like that before Kipling wrote "Once you have paid the Dane-geld, what do you do about the Dane". More a case of convergent evolution than inspiration, I think, and thus emphasizing an immutable reality that nobody seems to be aware of. Yeah, yeah, I'm a "know it all", but if you really want a mindfuck, ask me how the mistranslation of the German word "mit" has shaped US foreign policy since WWII, and thus shaped world politics. It strains credulity, I know, but the historical evidence is there. Let me know if you're interested in hearing me out, because I have no agenda to drive, no snake oil to sell. Or anyone who's willing to listen with an open mind, rather than simply keeping tabs on little things that can be used to tell me I'm full of it, as is all too common, these days.

You probably should start a playlist just for The Fat Electrician, because he's got a bunch of these types of videos on his channel, and if you like history (especially military history), you'll find his take on things very entertaining! As he says in his channel's bio, "I'm Nic. I'm a former 68w medic (Combat Medic Specialist), currently a journeyman electrician, and jiu jitsu coach", and is now working on his Master's degree in history. He started off doing 2-3 minute videos on TikTok with similar military history themes, and has gradually transitioned to KZbin, where his videos have gotten longer and more complex - and a whole lot funnier! Highly recommend "Proportional" that he mentioned, and the one about the destroyer that sank a sub with potatoes is also on his channel - you can find a whole lot of VERY interesting subjects!

@@GOTGames not every word from the Americans lips was true. The war of 1812 was due largely by the US invading Canada and burning their city which is now Toronto down. This enraged the Canadians who fought off and defeated the US, whilst the UK declared war during the Napoleonic peace after 1812's defeat of napoleon. The "History Chap" is brilliant with this historic happening that saw the UK and Canada invade the USA and burn down Washington in revenge.

He has a video about the quack bang". Basically US troops fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan would throw in a flash bang before clearing out a building, and the enemy learned to just shut their eyes and cover their ears. So then US troops would throw in rubber ducks or other items before so now the enemy doesn't know if it's a real flash bang or not. Also, a lot of his videos have post credit scenes that are worth watching

Short version of the USS O'Bannon story: Late 1942 the O'Bannon is patrolling the slot in the solomon islands on a moonless night. It is hot AF, so the galley crew are doing their prep work for tomorrow's cooking up on deck where's it's cooler, which on this particular night means peeling potatoes. Suddenly the O'Bannon comes across a japanese submarine on the surface, likewise letting their crew get some time on deck to enjoy the cooler night air. Because it's so dark, neither ship sees the other until they nearly collide. Once they do spot eachother, however, they immediately sound general quarters, but the O'Bannon is so close to the japanese submarine that they can't get the guns to depress low enough to actually hit it, meanwhile the japanese are scrambling to man their deck gun and get in some free hits. In a moment of desperation some of the crew on deck of the O'Bannon, frustrated that they cant actually bring their weapons to bear on the sub, start grabbing potatoes from the bins that were left on deck when battle stations was called, and start yeeting them at the japanese. Now remember, it's dark AF, and all the japanese know is that the americans are throwing something grenade sized and grenade shaped at them, so instead of getting their deck gun in action, they're running around the deck of their sub kicking potatoes overboard because they think it's grenades the americans are throwing. This delays the japanese getting their own deck gun up long enough for the O'Bannon to open the range enough that she can get her guns on target, and immediately blows the sub out of the water. And that's how a US destroyer killed a submarine with potatoes

The book "Six Frigates" by Ian Toll tells the story. Very enjoyable read. I don't know what everybody has said before in the comments, but it was six, not sixty, frigates the US used. The story of the US Navy and piracy didn't end there because over 200 years later, Somali Pirates started doing the same thing. Shipping companies had made an unspoken deal with them that their crews wouldn't fight back as long as the pirates didn't kill them and ransomed them off instead along with their ships. Maersk Alabama with an American crew was then boarded by pirates but the crew fought back wounding one of them. While most of the crew had locked themselves in a storage room, they did so after disconnecting the steering gear and shutting down the boilers. The pirates eventually fled in a life boat with the ship's captain held hostage. The US Navy then went into action and ended up placing snipers on one of their ships. From there they were able to get a thermal image of the pirates inside and killed all of them with head shots. This started an international effort to rid the horn of Africa of piracy, which in the end was successful. Moral of the story: the US doesn't like pirates.

the USS Enterprise is a name that's been worn by a number of ships in the US Navy, almost all of them Extremely Distinguished in their time. The Star Trek Enterprise was undoubtedly named after the Grey Ghost of WWII (the Japanese name for the enterprise was the grey ghost, due to her color and because of her penchant to appear in one place, strike then vanish and appear somewhere else. The Japanese actually believed she was 3 ships not one, all with the same name and design in some bizarre attempt to confuse the IJN, the Japanese even believed they had sunk her on 3 separate occasions only for her to show up at the next battle without fail), USS Enterprise CV-06 aka the Big E (the sailors name for her). The most decorated naval vessel in WWII, she made it from Pearl Harbor to the final day of the war without serious damage and taking a significant role in almost every naval battle of WWII (Pacific war). btw: she was an aircraft carrier... her aircraft were the ones who sunk the Kaga and Akagi within minutes of each other. The biggest crime of the post WW2 era was the US Navy scrapping the enterprise for spare metal, and not preserving her as a museum ship. Still that oversight has given the USA 2 more Enterprises, the first was the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier who would serve throughout the cold war and into the 00's, the second Enterprise is also a carrier, and is being built right now and will enter service in 2028

Fun fact, it was pirates during Thomas Jefferson’s time as the Secretary of State (before his VP or POTUS term) that may have been a factor of the US not adopting the Metric system. Jefferson had ordered some units (weights) from France in 1793 to review potentially adopting the new system. During the trip to the US, the ship carrying them blew off course and was captured by pirates. These were very expensive for the time and Jefferson decided against ordering another set. Not saying adoption wasn’t possible later on, however this was probably a factor of why we stuck with the imperial system.

Welcome to the Fat Electrician rabbit hole. Nic is the high school history teacher every kid wished they had. Might I suggest a few of his best (according to me); "Real Tank Genius of WWII- Percy "Hobo" Hobart", "Winter Soldier ODs On Meth", and "America's Secret Underground Cheese Bunkers". There are a multitude of others I could recommend but those 3 are a great start. Also Wait till the very end of Nic's vids. He usually has a little something after his sign off. The Origins of the "Quack-Bang"; Nic was a medic in the Iowa National Guard and, while he was never deployed overseas, he has several friends who were. One of his friends described room clearing combat in Iraq to Nic. His friend said that the team would stack up with 4 men on a door. They would kick the door open and throw in a "flash-bang" grenade to blind and disorient the enemy before rushing in to clear the room. It got to the point where the enemy would take precautions, closing their eyes and covering their ears, and being prepared when the troops moved in. So his buddy tried something different. His team stacked on the door, kicked the door open, and his buddy tossed in a rubber duck. When the G.I.s rushed in, everyone was looking at the duck in confusion instead of watching the door. They overwhelmed resistance and went home safely. His friend took to calling this tactic his "Quack-Bang" grenade. Hence Nic's signature sign-off, "Quack, bang, out."

The Enterprise from Star Trek was named after CV-6 USS Enterprise from WWII. Fun fact the car company Enterprise was also named after CV-6 as well. USS Enterprise was the most decorated Carrier of the war but sadly wasnt preserved as a museum more so since she was the last of the 3 in her class that made it threw the war with Yorktown sinking near midway and hornet sinking soon after Yorktown. Pretty much every ship that has had the name Enterprise has served with honor but few live up to what CV-6 has done.

How to sink a Japanese submarine with potatoes: During World War 2, whenever a destroyer caught a submarine on the surface, the destroyer would go in with all guns blazing, but USS O'Bannon decided to sneak up on a sub it caught on the surface. However, the downside was that the O'Bannon couldn't depress their guns far enough to be used, so, any hand weapons available? As it turned out the potato locker was fully stocked and potatoes were used. The Japanese were so stunned that they decided to submerge the submarine, not only leaving sailors on the deck, but also forgetting to close hatches, and thus, the submarine was sunk. 32:05 "Why doesn't anyone talk like this anymore?" Dude, you need to talk to American cops. a) So, on a Saturday night, over the radio, a breathless cop (Walters) calls "Signal 13" and gives his location. The entire shift hustles to Walters' location. Walters is out of breath, but explains that ten teens (now laid out on the ground/street) jumped him at an intersection and pull him out of his car. Walters defeats them. I asked Walters why he called a Signal 13. He calmly says "I ran out of handcuffs." b) Another Saturday night, another officer, suddenly gives his location on the radio and very angrily says "You better get this man out of my face!!" The shift hustles over there. Kevian had caught a car burglary in progress. The suspect resists and even after being cuffed, still resists. A City Councilman and community activist happen upon the scene and give Kevian grief, stating that the suspect is disadvantaged and needs to be released. The shift sergeant smooths out the situation with the councilman and the activist and the suspect is still booked that night, but cops rarely stand up to city leaders as it could be career suicide. c) My second partner, Laura, was interesting. We had called out to take a meal break and as we approach the restaurant entrance, a couple is exiting. Laura recognizes the female, says "She has a warrant" and before I can do anything Laura and the woman are tussling (and Laura is winning). Her companion then lands a solid punch to Laura's jaw. Laura immediately shakes it off and demands "You gonna let him get away with that?" The male suspect starts running, but he is out of shape, and I'm not. We then had to call dispatch, cancel our break call and report that we were inbound to booking with two suspects.

John Adams entered an ambitious program to build a navy. Paying off the Barbary States was to buy time to build the navy. He started by building Ships of the Line. When he lost reelection to Thomas Jefferson, the top deck was cut down so they could be finished before Jefferson took office. This gave us "Old Ironsides" and 5 other Hunphrey Frigates. These Frigates had the hull of a Ship of the Line and the speed and maneuverable of a clipper ship. They were a big surprise for any conversational firgate that took them on. Jefferson thought we only needed were harbor gunboats for coastal defense and we could rent anything else we might need.

Oh we're back to history reactions cool. I'm going to once again recommend "the 3 kingdoms" from Oversimplified and "the seminal tragedy" series from extra credits 16:25 partly it is though the reference in Star Trek is mostly about the far more famous ship the aircraft carrier "USS Enterprise" from WW2 "The Enterpise" is a name that is extremely storied in US history 18:40 I think I need more on this story too. This is gonna be my next rabbit hole 28:00 the trials and tribulations of 18th century communication speeds. We won't face these kinds of problems again until we are in space (and that only if we can't figure out faster than light communication) 34:40 Yeah it seems like these pirates were closer to what we English speakers would call "privateers" in other words pirates legalized at the service of 1 particular country

Some of the pirates in the Caribbean eventually joined the US in the war of 1812. The Barbary States were organized states that were easy to identify and engage. They couldn't move around to avoid our navy.

To be fair, John Adams worked to build up the US Navy and Jefferson retired part of it. This worked against the US when it fought the British from 1812-1814. The first construction act was for 6 frigates, not 60 ... but oh what frigates! USS Constitution is to this day still a commissioned US warship. USS Enterprise was also a truly legendary aircraft carrier in the Pacific during WW2, and also the name of the first nuclear carrier.

Regarding the USS O'Bannon... TFE does have a Short on it but basically the sub got too close to the O'Bannon for the destroyer to fire at the sub, so the crew started chucking potatoes at it from nearby barrels of them, causing the sub crew to think they were being pelted by grenades, keeping them from getting to their deck gun while the destroyer opened up enough distance from the sub to finally be able to fire on it and sink it.

Essentially, pirate activity on the Barbary coast was an early version of state-sponsored terrorism. I think the financial motive - either from piracy or from being paid tribute - was the primary motivation.

Pirates were mostly men from French, English or Dutch heritage, and were privateers or merchants. Many of these men were sanctioned by their government. By the Spanish they were call piratas or unsanctioned sea-raiders, and would have a heavy influence of trade in the Caribbean and on the Spanish Empire.

Bro! You keep watching TFE. He'll have you in tears from laughing, all but passing out, one moment and bawling like a little child the next. You want the story of the U.S.S. O'Bannion and the potatoes that sank a submarine? It's on there. Right along with many, many other amazing stories, most sprinkled with enough humor to keep you coming back for more. The man is hilarious, informative, and relatively historically accurate. You'll be amazed at what he covers on his channel, too. Not just US history. Find out about the original, real life Starfox from GB. Lol. You have a rabbit hole to visit, my friend. Later on!!

Most anything by The Fat Electrician is worthy of a college lecture. Between his military career, and now he's going back for a degree in history, he's got a lot of knowledge to share. Sure, some of the stories are abbreviated in spots, or exaggerated a bit, but the basic facts are there. If you haven't done "Proportional" yet, that's the one to watch. Or the tree in North Korea.

It wasnt 60 ships, he said 6. But they were state-of-the-art frigates, predecessors to the USS Constitution from the War of 1812. And also, his numerics are sometimes simplified... i.e., maybe its 6 new frigates, but accompanied by smaller ships like corvettes and such. Its like saying USA made 3 new aircraft carriers and sent them into battle...what all by themselves? Nah. And obviously the navy grew, but you gotta start somewhere.

If you ever get a chance, give "Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates" a read. I'm assuming this vid covers the topic, I'm about to watch it now. Anyways, the book is a good read. Fun fact about the first act of war regarding the flag pole. Men were sent to chop it down, but the best they were able to do was to give it a lean by having horses pull on it, if I recall correctly. They couldn't even chop it down because the wood was too hard.

@GOTGames On the Star Trek/Enterprise question. It absolutely is the reason for the name. The US Navy has a history of vessels with the name, almost always flagships. The current one is an Ford-Class aircraft carrier under construction, due to launch in 2025. before that it's been a Nimitz-Class carrier(1961-2017), a Yorktown-class carrier(1938-1947), a series of three schooners. The vessel from the Barbary Wars was actually the second vessel to bear the name, the original was used during the American Revolution and was lost during the Siege of Fort Ticonderoga in 1777. One of the frigates created from the Naval Act of 1794, the USS Constitution, is actually still in service, although primarily now as a museum/publicity ship rather than an actual combat vessel.
