There had certainly been previous history of bad relations between the U.S. and USSR in the 1920s and 1930s. The US was suspicious of Soviet attempts to spread communist ideology. I don't think the full impact of the purges and famines in 1930s USSR was known in America, but government officials knew enough to be wary of the Soviets. However, Nazi Germany loomed as a rapidly growing threat, so it was a matter of backing the USSR in order to defeat the Nazis and the fascists. Once that was accomplished, though, the British and American governments rapidly pivoted to try to contain Soviet influence in Europe.

It is a mix of our culture and geography. Mainland US has the best farmland in the world, the easiest to navigate river system, and plentiful amounts of natural resources. It is partially why the natives were so behind in technology, there wasn't a need for constant competition with their neighbors. Fighting definitely happened, but it was usually against smaller confederations of tribes. USA has all the benefits, but also they are part of a global network which forced competition and encouraged progress. European nations colonized so that they would have access to foreign resources, the US enforcing global free trade made colonialization obsolete for the EU, which also reduced the need of competition so the nations could join together. US not providing free trade protections would most likely cause Europe to resume their infighting. Free trade is also why a unified China exists today, usually in the past a large China was extremely short lived due to the vastly different geography and large population. They did not have the ability to support an extremely strong centralized power until the global markets encouraged western investment. Their current economy is a result of foreign investment being acquired, then borrowed from to fund other projects to keep their people occupied with paying jobs that are not really necessary. Their economy makes no sense, but the largest institutions in the west are addicted to investing into China's play money system that seems to print them a ton of profit. It is a system that would collapse quickly if those in power had an incentive to destroy it.

Plus with rapid technological advances from Germany the Nazi's may have even created the first nuclear bombs and dropped them on the UK negating the need to invade and used it as a show of power to convince the Soviet Union to surrender. Thus we would have a German Europe and a Japanese Asia.

In the years leading up to the war the Soviets had already beaten the Japanese in the Battle of Khalkin Gol. Also, it was Norwegian resistance fighters who made sure that Germany didn't create the first atom bombs. See: Operation Gunnerside. You're giving the USA way more credit than it actually deserves.

Ah, but you forgot one hugely important fact... If the US didn’t exist, then Japan wouldn’t have become a global power even to begin with. When the US threatened Japan to open up its ports to the world back in the 1850’s it basically caused Japan to modernize itself, including it’s military, so that it wouldn’t be bullied like that ever again. So ironically, the rise of Japan as a global power was all because of the US. But if the US never existed, then...
@gruweldaad Жыл бұрын
You seriously think Japan could conquer all of China and still have enough troops left over to attack the Soviets through Siberia? Never mind "don't invade Russia in winter"; how about "don't climb to the summits of Tibet and try to conquer them in the winter". I also seriously doubt that Germany would have been able to build the bomb alone, considering that they would have murdered all of the Jews, including Albert Einstein, that made all the scientific discoveries to build the bomb in the first place. You fundamentally misunderstand the destructive nature of Nazism if you can't see that Hitler's objective in killing all of the Jews was to make Europe stupider. In his view, a successful extermination would "resolve" the imaginary problem of "cunning Jews" covertly usurping him. So many of Germany's technological advances before the war were made by Jewish scientists, and the Manhattan Project was staffed by a lot of Jews other than Einstein. You underestimate the degradation of Europe caused by Nazism and overestimate the invincibility of Japan.

Fun fact left out if US didn't exist then Commodore Perry wouldn't have forced Japan to open it borders possibly preventing the Meji Restoration, and likely removing Japan from the Axis powers. Which also means they wouldve never invaded Korea leaving it unified.

Taxpayers in the United States paid millions to rebuild Europe and we also opened our country to many during the war for safety such as many English Children and royal Family members. If England would have repaid the massive debt, just what the US Taxpayers paid the Queen would be broke today. But we forgive the Debts Europe as a whole. Potatoes are used to make vodka for a couple reasons. Potato skins contain yeast. This yeast, when mixed with sugars it ferments very easily. Potatoes contain a lot of sugars, which are broken out of suspension when mashed and mixed with water. After a couple weeks of fermentation, this combination can produce a potato wine of around 10-12% alcohol by volume. From there, it is then distilled into vodka.

The United States also played a very big part and rebuilding Germany. What people forget is during the war a lot of people in America were doing without so that we could provide more all around the world. Everything was rationed and every manufacture turned into a military supplier. Women ran all of the trains and learned to weld as well as rivet the airplanes. Many women pilots learn to transport as much as they could Stateside and they even went over to Europe to parachute down and spy

In re: the Marshall Plan, one of the important lessons from WWI was the criticality of winning the peace after winning the war. We learned that lesson well and made sure that we won the peace after defeating Germany and Japan in WWII. We have since forgotten that lesson and have failed to win the peace in Afghanistan and Iraq after winning the wars there.

In addition to the Lend-Lease program, the U.S. helped during WWII to set up an organization called the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, beginning in 1943. This organization had donations from more than 50 countries and provided more than $3.8 billion in aid to displaced people and communities in areas liberated by the Allies. The U.S. contributed more than half of the total amount of aid money, though. But the broad base of donors was designed to set the framework of cooperation that the United Nations itself would employ once it was formed after the war.

With regard to WWI, the U.S. mounted a major civilian relief effort beginning at the end of the war in Belgium and northern France. That was followed in 1919 by U.S. creation of the American Relief Administration, which spent about $3 billion in today's dollars to provide roughly 4 million tons of relief supplies in 23 European countries, including Russia. The ARA continued its work through 1923. The effort was led by Herbert Hoover, who later went on to be elected U.S. president in 1928.

My Grandpa told his story of fighting in the battle of the bulge. He was a US machine gunner, 2 of the guys in his group deserted meaning he and the other guy had to carry all of the supplies. He had enemies firing rounds causing the earth behind him to break behind him because of the guns being fired towards him. Found a group of Germans willing to surrender but as night was falling was strongly considering killing all of them cause he had no idea what they might do during the night. Luckily a US group showed up before night hit allowing the POW's to be taken by someone else and ended up getting trench foot which allowed him to be the one of the most annoying people for the nurses because he was technically sick but not actually sick.

This donation amounted to 0.18% of the country's Gross National Income (GNI), far below the official development assistance target of 0.70% GNI. @@masternoobjunior3486 I have no knowledge about UK taxpayers. I am taxed on EVERYTHING. I am retired and it is alarming when the government needs money, Social Security is always mentioned. I had no choice as to whether I wanted to participate or not. I would rather manage my money rather the government. When SS was established, the money was NEVER to be touched. Had I managed my money I would have a nice retirement income. My husband and I managed to invest a modest amount of money, and were it not for that income, I would have a difficult time making ends meet. Our taxes go to countries around the world to prop them up. They give Israel millions each year, and then, give millions to Palestinians who have vowed to push Israel into the sea. Israel uses the money to create infrastructure and they produce beautiful fruit and vegetables in the desert. Israel is on the cutting edge for great strides in the medical and technology fields. Thousands upon thousands of tourists go to Israel each year and Israel provides guests with modern facilities. The Palestinian’s do very little toward infrastructure. They use the money in ways that could destroy Israel. One can clearly differentiate the Israelis from Palestinian. The Gaza Strip could be one of the most lucrative spots in the area. They could draw thousands of visitors annually. Tell Aviiv built a beautiful city that draws people from around the world. How does the Palestinian government at Gaza use America dollars-they build bombs to fire on Israel. Their people would have better jobs and incomes. I object to giving money to countries that squander it.
