@catherinecarr5023 жыл бұрын
@@falconhoward4032 Who told you universal healthcare systems are lower-quality than our own? Or that they're more expensive? There is literally no data supporting either of those claims. Folks in countries with universal healthcare live longer than we do and have lower rates of death from preventable causes as well as lower infant mortality rates and lower rates of women dying in childbirth. They also pay less money per citizen for healthcare. And I mean TOTAL cost per citizen, taxes + out-of-pocket combined. You'd be saving more on your insurance premiums and out-of-pocket medical bills than you'd be losing in taxes if we switched. Heck I was looking it up the other day and most countries with universal healthcare actually have lower tax rates for the vast majority of citizens than we do. In my income bracket I'd be paying less in Sweden or Norway than I'm paying in the U.S.. That's because in the U.S. we have to pay for all the advertising all the healthcare companies do since they're competing for our money. The pharmaceutical industry spent as much money on advertising as they did on research and development of new treatments last year, and all of that money came out of your prescription drug costs. Look up any of the stats I've just mentioned. You'll see that we're literally getting screwed constantly by for-profit healthcare providers delivering vastly inferior products for vastly inflated prices "because the free market is sacred."

As someone who grew up during the cold war and remembers the horrors of communist regimes like the PRC and the USSR it makes me sick when I think about how many young Americans think communism would be better for us than capitalism. What many don't realize is that after the cold war China's economy grew very quickly. They provided American companies with cheap (slave) labor and they all got rich. The Chinese began investing in American businesses and over the past 25 years they have managed to gain the majority control of many companies, specifically targeting American media and entertainment companies. They have been flooding the airwaves with anti-American propaganda for over twenty years. It's so bad now that many young Americans believe that the United States is the worst country in the world. It's very nice to hear something good about America for a change. Thank you.

Also Big part is diversity. So many cultures and ideas from not just the USA there. Around the world actually. Kind of a hub for out technology advances. Silicon Valley and some of the greatest start ups in history. IBM, Gateway, Dell, Intel, AMD, and of course Windows. I think back to the 80s and 91 in LA before I left for a few months. Came back and stayed until 93 then left for Kentucky and joined the Marine Corps. Music industry and movies etc. Right? But Again I can not say this enough, so many different nations and ethnic backgrounds. It opened up the flood gates. Internet was military prior to anyone having, ARPNET then IBM did WiFi for merchant servicing. Better known for IEEE but whose going to buy that so hens WiFi... wireless fidelity etc. Play on words for high fidelity. once that shit broke free to the market it was anyone's game, luck and some just being smart. The Internet started as a US military research project, to make a communication system that would still work even if some nodes were destroyed in a nuclear war. It connected military sites, research universities, a few big tech companies, and NGOs. In the 80s the government withdrew, and private telecommunication companies replaced the network infrastructure and allowed commercial use. Before the Internet became big in the 90s, the US had several private information services, all incompatible with each other (CompuServe, GEnie, AOL, etc). Without that government project, it might be still like that.

The US isn’t perfect, there’s been some heinous shit the US has done, which ill note that almost none of it was with the citizens knowledge or permission. What happened in Iran for instance likely would have had citizens pissed off and saying no, don’t mess with a democratically elected president. Our government on the other hand, seems to love to stick their fingers in a whole lot of pies. Regardless, I still feel the US has done more good than harm despite the stumbles and wrongdoings. I know the citizens want this country to be better and to do better, it’s just so difficult now with the power and influence money and corporations have on our representatives. We need money out of politics and lobbying to be made illegal again.

This might already be in the comments, but thought I would add it just in case. What eventually became the Internet started out as DARPA-net, a Department of Defense government funded research and development project run at first by 4 U.S. universities. The DoD pours a lot of funds into a lot of college and university projects, in addition to giving out huge contracts to private companies. Sometimes they lead nowhere, and sometimes they hit paydirt. DARPA-net eventually became ARPA-net, which eventually became the Internet, which includes things like e-mail and VOIP., not just web sites. Another big thing to come out of U.S. government military spending is GPS. At first, GPS and its satellites was just for the military. But eventually GPS became a product for everyday consumers, and why you can get turn by turn directions to anywhere on your phone. One of the reasons that the DoD can fund such massive long term projects is because of the size and stability of the nation. The DoD can project not only years, but decades into the future to see what taxes the government will most likely collect and spending that will be needed. If you have a huge pile of money that you know is going to be there for the next 30 to 50 years, you can invest in really HUGE projects. Some of the projects that the DoD has been funding over the last decade or so that will most likely see a transition to consumers sooner than later are things like quantum computing and "invisibility cloaks", which are materials placed around objects to help them "disappear" from plain sight. Optics, lasers, batteries.....all that stuff is being researched at U.S. universities that receive money from and work with the DoD, NASA, etc, all across the whole country. Colleges and universities need money, and the military and government needs bright minds.

Look up The American Industrial Revolution. America's creative growth spurt started there. And hopefully you can find a video that brings the story (and examples) from there forward to Silicon Valley and the Digital Age, etc. Only fair to mention that a lot of inventions, such as the airplane and the submarine, were being developed at the same time in other countries, so it was like a competition to see who would succeed first. Some competitors got sneaky and underhanded about it too, such as Thomas Edison vs Nicolai Tesla.

I mentioned a few of the US contributions that would never have come to fruition on the Part 1 comments section. But I would also like to mention that, ironically, these things would probably not have been created without the USSR and The Cold War. No space race. No need for a routing computer network for communications during a nuclear attack, ARPANET, that became The Internet. Necessity is the mother of invention, and we needed a lot of things to be invented to keep up with the Soviets.

So, the US, UK, France, China, and Russia are the 5 countries which are signatories of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and allowed to posses nuclear weapons. Other signatories of that treaty, which includes allies of all of those nations are no banned from nuclear weapons development or testing. This is designed to ensure world safety and control the number of nuclear arms in the world. But the only reason allied nations agree to this is under the understanding that the United States will protect it's allies from a nuclear attack by via a nuclear response. This is called the Nuclear Umbrella, and it's a very convenient arraignment for the non-nuclear allied states. This is the reason why countries like South Korea, Japan, Germany, and Italy do not develop nuclear weapons. They don't have to waste their resources or contribute to nuclear proliferation with the US protecting them.

Someone would have come up with the inventions you mention. In some cases, important inventions were developed in different places at the same time.

@@joshgonzalez3595 China is known for taking others inventions. Given Germany's history of engineering, I think they're definitely the obvious answer. It was German scientist that created the first jet engines for planes and of course the first jet propelled rockets like the V2.

There are many large Charities that run out of the United States where they send Aid and doctors and nurses all over the world for free

And engineers. I have family that go across the world with engineers without borders to build water systems, to bring clean water to places that wouldn't have it otherwise. The most recent was in South America, but yeah. No vacations, just unpaid good works.

All the inventions we have would have been invented either way sooner or later. The jet engine was being developed independently by 3 different groups of engineers that aren't copycats but genuine unique designs. The same applies to the everything. The first door would have been invented either way. The difference would be nuanced, if the US didn't dominate in the progression of the internet and tech, google wouldn't exist as it is, KZbin and all the celebrities, icons wouldn't be either. It would be different even if the technology, companies etc was very similar.

A lot of people around the world feel that the US needs to stop being the "daddy" so to speak or as we call it, big brother. There's a debate about how often we need to get involved with foreign affairs and when to just let others fight it out. Some think it's unethical we get involved ever, but there are some times we have been criticized for not being involved.

I’d also like to state that if the USA had never existed, we would have never landed on the Moon. There would have never been a “Space race”, therefor the Soviet Union would have no political or economic reason to achieve this goal. Now despite the uncanny significance of this event on its own, many people don’t truly understand the major effects this even had on the world. If we had never decided to land Humans on the Moon, our computer technologies would be at least 30 years behind where it is now. Yes, computers were developed before the Space Age, but they didn’t start truly improving and grow in relevancy until then. Space travel is an extreme feat of engineering, and the math behind landing a Human on the Moon is almost incomprehensible. So in order to achieve the goal, we had to build devices that could do calculations 100,000x faster than we could. So, we did. One of the very first Solid State computers, was the Saturn V’s flight computer (which is the absolute mammoth of a rocket that took the Apollo Astronauts to the moon). With the Moon landings came increased computer advancements. Which meant the development of personal home computers, game consoles, DVRs, personal mobile devices, modern day gaming computers, the internet, advanced medical technology, and etc.. So much of today’s world relays on these devices to communicate and even survive. And if the US had not existed, the Moon landings would not have happened, resulting in much slower computer advancements. We would be at least 30 years behind, meaning that the internet would still only be a concept, on a piece of paper.

They showed Germany taking most of western continental Europe after WW2 but then forget all about it and act like all those countries are back to being capitalist democracies like they are now +nukes. They also somehow have Israel existing which wouldn't have happened if the Axis won. Countries like Romania, Spain, Italy, and Japan were either part of the Axis or believed in some form of 3rd position political theory. Not to mention rulers like Gaddafi and a few others in the Middle East and Africa were also ideologically aligned with 3rd position , so it seems like they are vastly underestimating how big Germany's influence would have been, as well as Italy's. The Axis hated communism and would have been fighting against the USSR, and China , so they would have faced a lot a opposition.
