If a pitch is hit and caught in the air, the runners must wait till the ball is caught before they can leave the base. If they have already left the base they must return before the ball is thrown to the base or they will be out. Once the ball has been caught they are free to try to advance to the next base.

Agreed. Their is nothing more skillful then a shortstop catching a high speed ground ball hit, tossing it to second base, and setting up the double play. That role backs up two or three (depending on outfield strategy) other positions for field movement and often gets the receiving end of a 100 MPH line drive hit that knocks most pitchers down on their asses.

Baseball, America's Pastime. The MLB is older than any other pro sport in the US. I would suggest that you two watch "The Rules of Baseball - EXPLAINED!". It is a good introduction to the game, as it will go over the basic rules, so you can follow the action when watching a game. After that, if you want a good chuckle, then watch the "Not So Serious Baseball" series of videos. It's a lot like the mic'd up NFL videos, where they show the light-hearted side of the game.

While exactly correct, we don't like to admit that this beautiful game has anything in common with rounders. The early players and promoters of the game found that comparison highly offensive. Rounders is a children's game after all. If you find the game interesting, I highly suggest watching Ken Burns' Baseball. Probably not as a reaction video, just on your own time. As with all Burns docs, the research is meticulous. Baseball is purely American and in many ways mirrors the evolution of our society. For those of us who love this game, it is poetry in motion. Beautiful to watch. It seems so easy until you put on some cleets. Then you realize the skill these men have. The single hardest thing to do in all sport, is to hit a round object coming at you at 90+, with a round stick. If you fail 70% of the time in a career, you're in the Hall of Fame.

@@DNReacts And a big reason that baseball gained popularity across the whole country is it was played by soldiers during the American Civil War during the soldiers down time for battles and the game evolved a lot during that time from just just being a little kids game. Here is a quote from a website I found: Civil War Prisoners at Play The Civil War accelerated baseball’s popularity, as off-duty Union soldiers from the Northeast taught others the game. Officers encouraged games to foster morale and camaraderie, and Northern servicemen held in Confederate prison camps introduced the game to the South. In this illustration drawn from life at a North Carolina prison camp, spectators watch a baserunner steal second. As the war progressed, conditions worsened everywhere and prison baseball ceased.

Awesome to see you guys doing baseball! It's basically American cricket, to the point that a prominent American youtube baseball commentator also does cricket stuff (Jomboy Media). Baseball is played between teams of 9 players, with several reserves. Each team gets 27 "outs", split up into 9 "innings" of 3 outs each. A batter who makes an "out" can't score and has to go sit down on the bench, but unlike cricket isn't out of the game entirely. After all 9 players on a team have batted (and either scored, made an out, or been "stranded" on the bases when an inning ends), the lineup resets, and they each get get to bat again...and again...and usually a 4th and maybe even a 5th time per game, until they're substituted out of the game or their team uses up all their 27 outs and the game ends. Unlike cricket, which only has the two batsmen's positions, baseball only has one place where the ball can be delivered from the bowler ("pitcher" in baseball terms) to the batter - home plate. The other three points of the dirt diamond are called "bases," and they're safe places where a batter can run to after he's hit the ball. The runner only scores a point (a "run") for his team if he can go all the way around the bases anticlockwise and get back to home. Runners who are on the bases can advance to other bases, but are at risk of being tagged out between the bases, or thrown out if the ball gets to the base they're going to before they do (kind of like the ball knocking the bale off the wickets in cricket).

If the ball is hit in the air and a man is on base. The runner on base has to wait until the ball is caught to advance a base. In many cases the runner leaves early, realizes the ball is caught and he has to make it back to his original base before the ball is thrown there. Waiting until the ball is caught before advancing is called “tagging up.” Unlike a ball hit on the ground where a batter can advance immediately.

This is basically how baseball works. Each team fields 9 players at a time. You have 9 innings to get as many runs as possible. You get one chance to play offense and one chance to play defense each inning. The purpose of the defense is to get 3 outs while allowing as few runs as possible. On offense you use your line up 1-9. Once you get to the 9th hitter the line up turns over and it goes back to the 1st hitter. You can hit as many times as you want during an inning as long as you haven't made the 3rd out. You score runs by getting on base. You get on base by getting a base hit or getting walked. A walk if when the pitcher throws a ball to a better outside of the strike zone 4 times or hits the batter with the ball. An out is when a player in defense catches the ball after it is hit before the ball touches the ground. The pitcher can also strike a hitter out. This is when a pitcher throws the ball and the hitter either swings and misses or the he looks at a pitch in the strike zone. You need 3 strikes for a strikeout. A full count is then there are 3 balls and 2 strikes in a hitter. Meaning the next pitch with decide whether the hitter gets out or not, unless the hitter hits a foul. I could go on and on but that's the gist. Oh and also if a team has a hitter reach base, the next hitter can move him over by also reaching base. That is how you score runs. If a team has a runner on base and a hitter hits the ball in the air and makes an out by the opposing teams defense catching the ball before it hits the ground, and there are less than 2 outs, then the player on base can tag to the next base. The objective is to go around all 3 bases to score at home plate

So this is my second time seeing your videos watching baseball or baseball clips, and you guys asking some very good questions. With baseball being my first love, I wish I could sit there with you and explain this game. But I'll try and do my best in the comment section. So while what looks like what is happening is relatively straight forward when it comes to catching fly balls, there are some weird exceptions to the exception type rules going on. Therefore I will start with the very basics of the mechanic/strategy behind the game which will be long winded. In professional baseball there are 9 innings, each inning is divided into halves called sides which are the top and bottom in order, and each side there are 3 outs allowed to the offense. Once three outs have been reached then teams switch roles and a side is retired. Therefore you go from the top of the 1st, to the bottom of the 1st, then the top of the 2nd and so on until the end of the 9th (with one major exception having to do with home field advantage). The away team bats in the top and the home team bats in the bottom. The previous exception only has to do with if the home team is winning going into the bottom of the 9th, then the home team does not need to score and they automatically win and this is called home field advantage. Now, a team has 9 players and each player is placed in select order by the team to bat. That order cannot be changed, however a substitute will take that place in the lineup based on position. Anyways, a batter will get out if he: swings and misses for the third strike or known as striking out swinging; looks at the third strike (called by the umpire) or known as striking out looking; hits the ball in play and is tagged with the ball before reaching base or known as tagged out; hits the ball in play and the base is touched by the fielder with the ball that the batter is forced to (a force being that there is a runner that has to advance behind you, which for the hitter is the next hitter in line) or known as put out; and finally if the ball is on the fly from the bat and is caught before reaching the ground or known as a fly out. When out, the batter returns to the dugout and awaits his next or side change where he will play defense until his team hits again. With every single one except for the fly out situation, any runners on the base are allowed to advance as they will or are forced to advance. On a fly ball specifically, the runners are not allowed to advanced until the ball reaches the ground or is caught and must tag their current base before moving to the next base. Once the ball is caught though any force is removed since the batter is out and is no longer a runner. Now a runner is allowed to leave their bag and is only kept from running by the threat of the ball being caught. If a fly ball is caught and the runner does not tag their starting base for that play then all the fielders need to do is tag the base while holding the ball and the runner is out. All that to explain why a runner may be or may not be running. Lets say a ball is popped up and the runners believe it will be caught easily and close enough to the infield where the outfielder can throw the ball to the next base before the runner gets there, creating what's called a pickle. If that were the case you'll see the runners lead off the bag halfway, hoping that by some miracle then odds will be in their favor and the fielder will drop the can of corn (a term for an easy catch). If the ball is dropped then they will easily make the next base. But if the ball is caught they must return to their base for that play before they can advance and that time removes the possibility of advancing before the ball gets back to the infield. If however the runners feel that the ball will be caught deep enough with a struggle to get the ball back to the infield then they will tag up before the ball is caught and wait until then to sprint to the next base. Or if the runners think there's no way the ball will be caught they just run hoping that they will not have to return to their base before it gets tagged and they are doubled up (a term for the defense getting 2 outs in one play also known as a double play). Now, the examples I gave are for most cases. If there are no runners on and a fly ball is caught then an out is recorded and the next batter steps in the box. If there are 2 outs and the ball is caught then the side is over. If there are 0 outs or 1 out, then the previous rules apply. If there are 2 outs then the runners will run freely as there is no chance of being doubled up since a catch is the final out of the side and a drop releases the runners. What you'll find is in a 2 out situation the runners will go on contact of the bat with the ball, no matter the direction. Now, I'm gonna throw some more curves into what I've already said. There is a rule called the infield fly rule, where there are runners on 1st and 2nd base, or on 1st, 2nd and 3rd during a pop fly to the infield, the batter is automatically called out in order to remove the force and keeps the runners safe from being doubled up if the ball is dropped (probably intentionally since the defense can easily get a triple play doing this). Another exception is if the ball is popped into foul territory, the runners will not be allowed to advanced because the play will be dead, however the batter can still be put out if caught, which if that happens the runners can then advance as if it landed fair or was caught fair. Oh, I heard you guys didn't know what a foul was in the other video, so anything within the lines created from the center of home plate in a 90 degree angle that passes along the edge of first and third base going all the way to the wall is fair and anything outside of that area is foul. And anything inside the the field is in play but anything outside the field is out of play. So a ball hit on a fly, foul, but in play is catchable by the fielders and will be out if caught or a strike if not. A ball hit fair but out of play is a home run. And a ball hit foul and out of play is just a strike. Keep asking questions, that's how this game is learned by observing and correlating what you see happening. It'd be great if you guys watched some peculiar situation videos. Some of them can make your head spin!

If there is a runner on base when a hitter files out, he cannot advance. He must return to the base he was on when the ball was hit. However, The runner may advance if he tags up (that is he runs only after the ball is caught - as opposed to leaving the base before the batter’s hit is caught). If the runner doesn’t get back to base before the ball arrives, he will be out. That means a double play has happened. The batter who hit the ball is out AND the runner who failed to reach his base.

This might help: The guys you see running back to get to the base they were on were other players ALREADY ON BASE when the batter hit the long (but caught) ball. They'd assumed the batter either hit a home run or that the ball would drop on-field and they could advance. See, after a fly ball is caught, the baserunner can 'tag up' and run to the next base. But if he's already started running, the outfielder that caught the ball can potentially throw the ball to the base he's left before he gets back there and he get's tagged out. Clear as mud? In the glove, or with bare hand, if the outfielder prevents the ball from touching the ground (catches it) and able to maintain control (not drop it), it is an out. Resulting in the batter having to return to the bench until his turn to bat comes back up in the rotation. So, in a typical game, every player has a chance to get 2-3 turns at bat over 9 innings. Even in a "perfect game" for a pitcher, where nobody is able to get a hit (striking out or caught balls that prevents someone from getting to first base) you will be looking at 3 turns per player to bat. The only exception to this rule is the "designated hitter" rule. Which allows a team to send a "specialist" to bat for another player (often the pitcher) but ONLY if that specialist is designated to bat BEFORE the player in rotation gets into the "batters box" (batter's location at home-plate). IF a player already enters the batter's box (especially after taking the 1st pitch in that turn at bat) then you can NOT switch to the specialist to hit. You CAN (however) send in a specialist to run once the player "gets to base". (Designated runner). The "designated hitter/runner" is more or less a way to "save" a pitcher's arm for the full game, or to get "speed on the bags" (Faster runner on base). This is also normally used by the "American League" (1/2) of the MLB, as the "National League" tends to ignore the "designated hitter" option but can use the runner option. This is a "hold out from the old days" before the 2 leagues merged to create the MLB that we know today.

The 'line-up', which is the order the players bat, is used during the game unless the manager pulls a player or an injury occurs, then a new player is inserted into the game. I've been watching baseball for 65 years and if you want to see some amazing plays, look up plays made by Nolan Arenado. He's the best defensive third baseball in baseball, hands down. Ok, the players you're seeing going back to first base was already on the base when the ball was hit. The first baseman had to run to second, but when the ball was caught, the batter is out, and the runner on first needs to get back to first to keep from being thrown out himself (the fielder that caught the ball throwing back to first base).

One thing you can tell from each clip is circumstances of the game. If an outfielder catches the ball and sort of reacts casually, then there were no other runners on base OR it was the 3rd out of the inning. If the outfielder catches the ball and quickly throws it back into the infield, then there were other runners on bases, who were free to advance once that ball was caught OR who had already advanced thinking the ball wouldn't be caught. In the former case the outfielder wants to throw to the next base. In the latter case the outfielder is throwing to the abandoned base because if the ball can get there before te runner gets back, the runner is out.

Also, besides hitting each defensive position has its own specific skills. 5he catcher not only has to signal to the Pitcher what pitch to throw, he has to have a great arm to throw runners out trying to steal. The 3rd Basement has to have Great Reflexes as the hit ball gets to him so fast, the short stop has to have great range to get to ground balls and a great arm to throw to first. Each outfield position is different as the batted ball comes to the left, center and right fielder at different angles....and the Right Fielder has to have a Great Arm as he has to make the longest throw in the game... From the Rightfield Wall to 3rd base...2nd and 1st base takes great footwork.. These guys are so Skilled they make it look easy and playing baseball is not easy...Hitting or Fielding

When a player is out, he is not out of the game. It just means that opportunity is lost and he goes and sits down until it’s his time to bat again. There are nine players in the line up at a time on each team. They take turns batting through the team lineup until the other team gets three players out. When both team get three outs, that is called an inning. It’s like an untimed period. Typically a player bats about four times per game unless there is a lot of scoring. So if you get three strikes you’re out and you go sit down until next time around. If you hit a ball that is caught in the air that is also an out. If you hit the ball and the defense gets the ball to the base before you arrive there it is also an out.

If a base runner isn't expecting the ball to be caught, they'll usually start heading to the next base and then backtrack if the catch is made. They can also "tag up" by touching their current base during/after the catch and advancing to the next base. So you'll see people running full speed in either direction around the bases at times.

Part of the difficulty of an outfield catch is when the outfielder is not in his home park. In his home park, a player gets a better sense of the dimensions of the outfield, the height of the wall, whether the wall is padded for safety (some walls are just a fence or a brick wall....NOT SAFE TO COLLIDE WITH). Every outfield is a bit different.

Good outfielders are important. What is often not seen is how much distance is traveled before catching a ball - traveling over 80ft in just 2-3 seconds requires some quick feet. Also being able to see the ball and not lose track of it is incredible seeing as it is traveling over 100mph

The "catch probability" percentages are generated by Statcast. There are a bunch of cameras around the park that triangulate the players position, the spin and trajectory of the ball, and the distance the fielder has to cover, and from A (starting to position) to B (catch location) his sprint speed. Given the average sprint speed, the distance that needs to be covered, the hang time, spin/trajectory, it calculates the likelihood that the average player will make the play. It does not factor in other position moves or the individual player's sprint speed. Buxton's 15% probability at 2:10 is imagined that no other player is on the field, and that Byron Buxton is an average centerfielder. Which isn't the case - Byron Buxton is among the fastest players in baseball, and an elite defensive outfielder. The average player makes that 15% of the time, Buxton probably makes the catch 25% of the time (lower with the crossing left fielder). Still impressive, but a full standard deviation better than average. Some plays look great due to the dive or leap, but the necessity of the dive/leap are predicated on a player being slower, taking a less direct route to the ball. or misjudging the angle and thus having to make adjustments on the fly. Thus, in terms of probability, a lot of "spectacular" plays end up having a high probability of success when weighed against MLB average. Some rough details here: www.mlb.com/news/statcast-introduces-catch-probability-for-2017-c217802340

Late to the party I am here. My favorite catch, because I am a Minnesota Twins fan, occurred in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series when Kirby Puckett robbed Atlanta's Ron Gant of extra bases. There are two other World Series catches I rate more highly and that I think are the two best ever at any time on the baseball calendar: 1954, Game 1: Willie Mays of the Giants robbing Vic Wertz of Cleveland. All else pales in comparison. 1975, Game 6: Dwight Evans of the Red Sox robbing Joe Morgan of Cincinnati. The greatest major league game ever played, and while not the climactic moment its brilliance under pressure was astounding.

1:22 I just want to say that the only time a player is forced to leave the game is when the umpire ejects them. being ruled out does not mean you are done for the game it just means you did not make it on base safely, and the other team has collected 1 of 3 total outs necessary to end the inning.

The batter is out on a fly ball that is caught. But if there is another player already on the bases, they can start running to get to the next base but they have to wait til the ball is caught. The only case you can’t is when it is third out, so the inning is over.

Like cricket, all nine players bat in order, but unlike cricket, once there are nine outs, the order begins again ("top of the order"). There are nine innings in a game, therefore 27 outs. So each player will bat at least three times in a game. It could be more, of course; if a batter gets on base, that adds one to the "at-bats" in the inning. (The record is 19, with 14 runs scored.) And a game can go into extra innings; a game in 1984 went for 25 innings before the tie was broken. Also, players can be substituted for other players. Once a player is substituted, he can't be brought back in to the game. So a player might not even bat at all. Also, in the American League, there is a "designated hitter," who doesn't play in the field. One field player doesn't bat, typically the pitcher who is typically the weakest batter on the team. (In the National League, there is no designated hitter and the pitcher has to bat.)

Catch probability is calculated based on where the ball lands, how long it took to get there, and how far away from that position the fielder was when the ball was hit. The catch where someone jumped in front of Buxton and he lost sight of the ball had a 15% catch probability because roughly 1/7 fielders would be able to get to where the ball landed before it got there, and should reasonably be able to catch it.
@psymar

I think the percent catch numbers are based on how far the fielder had to run to catch it and how long the ball was in the air, which means it can leave out auxiliary factors like other players being nearby.

I don't know if anyone said anything, but if you're the batter, and the outfielder catches your ball, you aren't out for the game. There are 9 innings in a game, with three outs in an inning, giving each team a total of 27 outs to score as many runs as possible. Batters hit in order from 1-9, and can hit an unlimited amount of times, as long as the defense doesn't make 3 outs, in which teams change sides. The hitter just gets mad that they were robbed of a hit, but usually we'll tip our caps to a diving catch... If the dive was needed.
@Pitts4d
@Pitts4d Жыл бұрын
If you're wondering about the catch probabilities they're based on the speed and angle of the ball off of the bat. Based on that they determine how often hits with similar numbers are caught. So sometimes catches will look less impressive despite a lower percentage because it doesn't take into account specifics. Not sure if that makes sense at all but hope it does!

When a fan reaches out to catch a ball in play, they can be called for interference. If it is determined they interfered with a player who could have made a play there may be a penalty assessed to the home team. Reaching over the wall like those fans did is a big no-no. There are some rather infamous incidents of fan interference - I believe even in a World Series game. Also, there is actually a lot of different things going on in this video. You may have noticed after some of these catches the player hangs onto the ball or casually throws it back towards the diamond and other times they complete the catch and immediately launch the ball back towards the infield. That is because, if there are player(s) - other than the batter - already on base, they are in play and can advance to the next base, and even home, if they don't leave their original base until after the catch has been made AND as long as the catch wasn't the 3rd out of the inning. The batter is out but all other players on base can run to the next base at any time as long as the game is not in a time out. They just have to make it to the next base without being thrown out by an always alert (hopefully) player on the field. This can occur even when the pitcher is setting up to pitch. For baseball, I also recommend watching spectacular infield plays - triple and double plays, pickles, pitcher and catcher pickoffs, and stolen bases. Baseball is a very fun game to watch.

To answer another question y’all had, unlike cricket, if you’re out you have to return to your teams dugout or seating area but you aren’t permanently out. Each team has a batting lineup that lists the batter you’re sending up next so instead you’re heading to the back of the line up unless your team gets 3 outs at which point your team takes the field and starts a new half of the inning.
@Scholarstorm
@Scholarstorm Жыл бұрын
Baseball is done in a rotation. So there a 9 batters and after 9 comes the 1st batter (the leadoff man). but 9 innings of 3 outs each. If you get out you may get another chance, but since 3 outs ends the inning, you don't want to be the third out since it'll eliminate any runners on the bases.

The catch probability thing is basically a metric for how often balls hit at that speed and angle to that part of the field are caught. It's an average that also takes into account the average speed and ability of outfielders too, so it's not specific to the actual catch, but the likelihood with any given fielder that the ball would be caught once it was hit. So theoretically an outfielder could make a super difficult diving play on a ball with a 99% catch probability if he got like a really bad read on a ball hit only a few feet from him.

Again, really have to commend you guys for putting things together so quickly. Just to emphasize the importance of the catches you were watching where there were runners going back to bases, if any of those catches aren’t made those runners are absolutely scoring. So those catches aren’t just great athletically, they saved one if not multiple runs and/or won the game by doing so. I highly recommend you guys watching an all-time outfield catches/throws reel. Its called Tagging Up, it doesnt matter where the base runner is on the field, whichever base he is at, he must wait until the ball is caught, infield, outfield, fouls, anything that goes up in the air, must be caught, to allow the base runner to "Tag Up", if the runner is stealing and the hitter pops up, that runner must go all the way back to whatever base he was on, if he doesnt make it and the fielder throws the ball to that base, before the runner gets back, the runner is out.

The catch probability (the percentage) is based on the time the ball is in the air along with the distance the fielder has to travel to get to it in time, and the angle necessary to reach it, average speed of fielders at that position etc. It doesn't take into account another player in the area or anything like that. So for example, a ball hit 50 feet behind a fielder would have a lower probability than one hit 50 feet in front of him. One hit 50 feet behind and to his weak side (non glove) would be harder than one hit behind and to his glove side etc. I won't pretend to know every detail that goes into it, but that's the type of thing that gets figured in.

A few key things about baseball: it is a 9v9 game where both teams have to hit and field against the other, with the exception of the pitcher who doesn’t hit anymore as of two years ago. The batters are put into a nine man order with the goal of scoring as many runs as they can before they get three outs, and whenever a player gets out it moves on to the next batter in the lineup. This repeats throughout the game, and once that 9th batter is out, it goes back up the order to the #1 hitter. A good offense will typically have the entire team getting 4-5 at bats a game. The fielders want to get the batters out before they score any runs, and they do this in three main ways: fielding a hit ball and throwing it to a force out base before a batter reaches it (a force out base will always be first base, 2nd base of a player is on first, 3rd base if players are on 1st and second, and home if players are on every base). Another way is by strike out, where the batter swings and misses (known as a strike) the ball three times, and foul balls are also strikes for the first 2 swings but not a strike on the the last one, or else the game would be a lot slower. The last main way fielders get out is by catching a ball in play before it touches the ground, which is what y’all are watching. There are a ton of other small rules that you don’t see too often that we’ll explain to y’all once you come across them, I just didn’t want to type all of them out. Would also recommend watching things like furthest home runs ever hit, loudest crowd moments, final outs of the World Series, walkoff homeruns, and shohei ohtani highlights (who is widely considered the most talented player in baseball since he is both an elite pitcher and hitter, something no one has done at his level since like the 1920’s). Also would recommend watching the best team in baseball, the Houston Astros, and helping to grow our UK fan base even more (we have a lot of fans from there because of the oil industry down here and British Petroleum’s base). Hello! The Rules of Baseball - EXPLAINED! should get you started. While the strategy has evolved over the years, this game is played by teams, also focusing on the Batter vs Pitcher match ups. I enjoy how coaches use different ways to win games. This may prove to be difficult, as MLB teams can spend more than other teams to acquire players, and this may prompt an unfair advantage. For example, the NY Mets' pay roll is over $335 Million, and the Oakland Athletics payroll is around $40 Million. On occasion at a game, a Batter will hit a ball with some velocity behind it, producing a loud "Crack" of the wooden Bat hitting a ball. That is my favorite part of baseball. Enjoy!

The batter would not have reached W/O the mistake. 4. If catcher drops strike 3 , the batter can reach 1st by running (only on strike 3). 5. A Balk. If the pitcher makes an illiegal move w/ o setting with his foot on the pitching rubber. A bunt. ( pushing the ball with the bat) fyi strike 3 counts on a bunt even if you foul it off. 6. Catcher interference. If the catcher interferes with the at bat in any way. Batter is awarded 1st base. 7. Intentional walk. If the pitching team decides to walk a guy, they don’t have to pitch. The signal to the umpire.8. Hit batsmen. If the pitcher hits a batter with a pitch. Those are the only ways to reach 1st:

Once the ball is in the air, men on base can ATTEMPT to advance to the next base, but have to retreat to the previous base if the ball is caught. If base runners don't retreat, they can be tagged "out", by throwing the ball to a teammate. I'm really hoping they show Bo Jackson running up the outfield wall to make a catch. That one blew my mind.
@John-pp8qv
@John-pp8qv Жыл бұрын
Bear in mind, the primary objective of a base-runner is to advance to the next base "without being touched by the ball". It's risk vs. reward: I'll explain... Let's just say the base-runner is on 1st base. The base-runner doesn't HAVE to be "physically on" 1st base when he begins running, he is allowed to meander as far away from his original base as he wants even before the pitcher throws his next pitch to the batter. The advantage (reward) of this is that it brings him closer to his next base if the batter successfully hits the ball and may even afford him to advance even further before the ball is returned. However, the "risk" is if the ball is hit, but gets caught (thus not a successful hit), the runner needs to run back to his original base as fast as he can before someone throws the ball to the base he's supposed to be on or he'll be out.

If there are runners already on base (from a hit or a walk previously) they have to wait until the ball is caught to advance to the next base. Once the outfielder catches the ball - you're seeing RUNNERS who leave the base early not the BATTER running back to a base. If the runner does not make it back ti the base before the outfielder throws it to an infielder, who is guarding that base - the runner is out and it's a double-play. All the infielder has to do is catch the ball and step on the base. The batter is automatically out if the ball is caught in the air anywhere on the field.

A lot of these are pretty unremarkable catches. You can probably find a much better highlight video than this.
