You guys were asking about the difference of the bat crack between in the video and actually being there. Speaking from someone who played baseball in school and as someone who has been to MLB games I can say that a loud hit like that instantly gets everybody's attention in the entire stadium. It doesn't matter what they are doing, that's how loud they can be at times lmao.

The loudest crack I ever heard off the bat was from Ellis Valentine at candlestick park (lousy acoustics). The ball never got more than ten feet off the ground and one-hopped into the fence before the left-fielder could move even a few steps. The collective "whoa" from the crowd was instant.

Looked like most of these clips were from the last 2 -3 years - so many had empty stadiums because of Covid - but the sound of the bat is an interesting detail of the game - when you get into the sport - and you're watching a game - that sound is the first thing you use to judge the potential for a home run vs. a fly out - but one thing to remember - the temperature of the air around the stadium matters - i'm a San Francisco Giants fan - and the air around the stadium - all summer long - is damp and cold. The ball simply doesn't travel as far (all things being equal) than most other stadiums. By comparison - the stadium for the Colorado Rockies - during the summer - is dry and the air is thinner because of the high elevation of the city of Denver (home to the team) - much easier to hit a home run (again - all things being equal) - anyway - great reaction - thanks for posting this one.

At 2:22 the crowd was extra loud because this was not only in the world series, but the Cubs were making their first World Series appearance in 71 years, having not won it since 108 years prior. Also there are a couple types of wood used for bats, that might be a factor.

3 of the loudest cracks of the bat I have ever heard - 1984 Tigers vs. A's, Lance Parrish of the Tigers hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning that hit the facing of the roof. J.D. Martinez of the Tigers. The first pitch he faced after a 2 month stint on the disabled list. Miguel Cabrera also from the Tigers hit a homerun to straight away center field that landed inside the camera well. It was louder than the one at 4:09 of this video. I would love to see you guys react to Kirk Gibson vs. Dennis Eckersley, Game 1 of the 1988 World Series - one of the greatest at bats in history and it just happened to be in a World Series game.

You can hear the crack of the bat in a stadium with 50,000 fans in it. It's pretty loud, especially if it's good contact. That said, it's pretty easy to eventually differentiate between good and bad contact or if a bat broke or if a guy got jammed up the handle just with your ear. Including the sounds of fielding, baserunning, and pitching, you can eventually get a good idea of what's going on in a game just by hearing the sounds of it. When someone steps on a bag. What type of pitch was thrown. If a ball was caught. Someone sliding into a base. There are so many sounds that are so distinctive in baseball

The ball has to hit the sweet spot on the bat to get that loud crack of the bat and for the ball to go so far. The microphones are located next to the home plate area, so the sound in the stands there are very similar in real life as on TV. But the fans in the outfield stands do not always hear the loud crack of the bat, they are reacting to the rest of the crowd that heard it. That is why there is always a slowly rising noise level as the ball flys over the fence.

The slide that you noticed the ballpark is here in Milwaukee. Our mascot Bernie Brewer, a German brewmaster, lives in a chalet at the top of that. Whenever a home team player hits a home run he slides down the slide. It used to end in a large beer stein, and incorporated a large beer barrel as well. As you can guess from all this and the team being called the Brewers, and the stadium originally named Miller Park thanks to Miller Brewing, we love our beer here in wisconsin.

That Ohtani sound is legit. I'm a lifelong Angels fan and I've never heard the ball come off the bat the way it did for him. I've heard other guys like Judge, Trout, and Pujols get ahold of one and it make that noise, but Ohtani's sound different even on one's he doesn't quite get ahold of. The old timers who watched Bo Jackson play back in the day said his sounded like that, and they have legitimately passed into something akin to baseball myth. He's the only comparable I can think of for the sound of Ohtani's swing. Also, it is so much better for these types of homeruns in person. You can hear it from anywhere in the stadium. The last thing I wanted to mention was you asked about was the echo. Because parks are unique, the sound is different in each one. Camden Yards in Baltimore comes to mind right away because of all the brick they used behind home plate and Petco park in San Diego because of how vertical the stadium is and the buildings are so closely pressed in around it.

As a Brewers fan, I think I'd better explain the slide in left field at American Family Field (formerly known as Miller Park). The Brewers' mascot, Bernie Brewer, hangs out at the top and slides down when the Brewers hit a home run... that's really all the explanation there is. One of the best things about baseball is the uniqueness of every ballpark. Every one has a few quirks that you can't find anywhere else.

Sometimes the crack sounds more crisp just due to the acoustics in the stadium and how the cameras and microphones used pick it up. However, there’s nothing like hearing it in person, I remember grabbing some snacks while at an A’s game and one of the players hit one and you could hear it from all the way at the concessions, everyone turns around immediately. Each team has something they do for Home Runs hit by there players, the New York Mets have an Apple in center that pops up when they hit a homer. San Francisco Giants have two things, they have a "Splash Hit counter" a counter that keeps track of Home Runs hit in to a section of the bay situated right behind the Right Field wall and known as McCovey Cove, on the fly, by local players, currently at 97, and Geysers in left field that go off after every Giants Home Run.

It sounds sweeter live. In fact… watch the veteran pitchers after they hear it…. They just put their head down. When the crack isn’t as loud or it’s a younger pitcher, you will see them turn around to see if it’s hit out. About 80% of bats are made out of maple because of its density. Ash is considered more flexible by some. That accounts for some of the different sounds you hear. There are those who claim (I’m not one) that they can tell the difference in the cracks of the bat. I just know that each bat is as different as the tree it came from. As many have commented before … the thrill of hearing that sound live is amazing.

Don't forget that players use different kinds of bats, made of different woods, so they may make different sounds. Also, if a hitter hits it on the fat part of the barrell, as opposed to near the end of it or closer to the handle, it may make a different sound. But home run hitters like Ohtani, Judge and Guerrero, there's no mistake when they hit it right, that sweet sound (unless it's against your team). The different microphones and where they are positioned may make it sound different. Also, a few of these were in 2020 during Covid when fans were not allowed. An empty stadium will make the sound crisper without other noises.

They make those bats with different types of wood. So that makes for different sounds in many cases. Also, only major league and minor league baseball use wooden bats ( except in some summer leagues for amateur players). ...In the "minor" leagues, the stadiums are smaller and it's not as loud in the stadiums, so you are really able to hear and enjoy some great sounds of the ball coming off the bat.

There are a bunch of factors in the sound. ESPN does have extra mics, but other things like crowd size (more people absorb more sound), the stadium acoustics, and the type of wood the bat is made from. Some stadiums are like medieval churches where the reverb is unreal. And certain types of wood crack louder than others. Want to point out, though, you'll often hear announcers say things about Ohtani and other elite hitters that, "The ball just makes a different sound off his bat." It really does.

The crack is different, but there’s slight differences. You hear it and you can tell if it was hit high or low, or right or left, and even if the batter was “on time”. There’s different sounds to each one, and even the muddled ones (ie a left handed batter hitting a homerun to right field) has its own sound that lets you know whether to try to catch it or just turn and see where the ball lands. It’s basically why when you watch this videos the fans go crazy. And the best catches video you’ve already reacted to, they hear that and know they can catch it, assuming they haven’t misjudged the ball

To me, the sound of a great fastball smacking a catcher's mitt is even better than the sound of bat to ball.

4:38 It might also have to do with the stadium design, crowd size or where on the bat the ball hits. And yes, it is audible in person.

Anyone who has ever pitched and gotten taken deep will always tell you. Sometimes you know as soon as you let go of the ball. But most of the time you know when the bat hits it. Look at most of these pitchers. It’s… absolute self disgust. It’s like shame, anger, embarrassment, and disbelief all at once. I may have felt it a few times.

The crack definitely sounds better in person. The area on the bat that produces the best sound and vibration is called “The Sweet Spot”. The idea of just trotting around the bases or showboating is a big no no in baseball. It’ll potentially get you drilled later. It’s one of the unwritten rules. You don’t show up the other team. (But of course it happens)

At the ballpark the sound comes even more delayed than watching it on tv.

Love this series, keep it up guys. Your videos give me fresh eyes on something 2nd nature my whole life. Maybe I should watch soccer videos. I think it'd be a similar eye opener.

well the broadcasters are in a boxed in room way up above the crowds so if you was in the middle of the crowed then you would almost feel def after leaving

There were comments about Bo Jackson when he hit home runs. Supposedly a different sound than other guys.

Listening to Shohei Ohtani's or Giancarlo Stanton's bombs are second to none. If you look at the stats coming off of the bat you will know why they are loud. 110-120 mph (177-193 kph) is scorching off of the bat, and it's even better when it's off of a 95+ mph fastball. What's also fun to listen to are when the ball is caught just right there is a loud snap. I could light up small stadiums when I was catching, even with guys only throwing 70mph.

The sound depends on where on the bat you hit it like on the sweet spot of the barrel if it hit it more towards the end of the bat it makes a different sound that's why ohtanis sounded different

The wood the bat is made of errects the sound of the ball off the bat The stadium sound system errects the sound as well
