Earlier in the season these two teams got into it. Puig tried to fight the whole Pirates team single handed. It was early April Derek Deiterich hit a no doubt home run off Chris Archer and the Pirates took offense to how Deiterich reacted to it. Then Archer threw at him in his next AB. @@JoeyVatavuk I totally get it man. I'm a Phillies fan and outside of last year and that couple years in the 2000s they've been bad my whole life. Baseball is especially rough to follow if you have a bad team because seasons are so long. 162 games of watching a failure, it really gets to you lol. Maybe they will one day turn it around like the Phils have. They'd probably need to sell the team for that though. Current ownership of the Pirates are just so cheap. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are division rivals. Baseball is a weird sport where it has a reputation of being boring yet these bench clearing brawls aren't all that uncommon. This one in particular is unique but hockey is the only sport that surpasses baseball in the amount of times entire teams fight each other.
@BobbyBoucher228
@BobbyBoucher228 Жыл бұрын
There hasn’t been a bench clearing brawl in hockey since the 80’s, let alone a line brawl since the mid 2010’s. That shit in hockey is in the past unfortunately, or fortunately depending on who you ask. Teammates these days often don’t have their teammates backs in scrums and most NHL teams generally lack team toughness these days. But the upside is that the skill of players today is completely through the roof.

"you have the ball" is a reference to the pitcher having the power if there is a feud between teams. Pitcher's often would intentionally hit batters with 90+ mph fast balls when they are upset with them, and the batters cannot retaliate (they don't get a chance to throw back at the pitcher). Voto is saying that the pitcher shouldn't be looking for a fight and try to hit batters because the batters cant (during gameplay) retaliate if they get beaned by a pitcher.

Sorry, just getting around to this one but would love to add some context as a Reds fan and watched this whole incident play out over the course of 10+ years. This rivalry is very underrated in terms of baseball rivalries. Both cities are very close to each other, and if you haven't covered the Cincinnati vs. Pittsburgh football rivalry yet, that one is FIESTY and always heated. Back in the 1970's the Reds and Pirates played multiple playoff series against each other, and both teams were star-studded. Big names everywhere. However, the Pirates untimely lost their superstar in a plane accident and from there were very middling until the 1990's. The Reds after the 1970's started to have troubles outside of a few select years, and then after 1995, spent a long time in the basement. Both teams spent a lot of the early 2000's being really bad, until they both got good again in the early 2010's led by a superstar on each side. Joey Votto and Andrew McCutchen. In 2013, both teams made the playoffs and faced off in the Wild Card game where the Pirates crowd was so energetic, they rattled the Reds starting pitcher on their way to beating the Reds and moving on. The Pirates had 3 or so good seasons until they found themselves back in the basement, and the Reds after this loss spent the next 6 years being one of the worst teams in the league. 2019 was a very weird year for baseball, but it also saw the rejuvenation of the Reds as a middling team instead of a basement dweller. The Pirates were still awful and their manager was notorious for him telling his players to injure other teams batters. There is no bigger scumbag manager in baseball history than Clint Hurdle. This brawl was just a piece of the incidents that happened that year. The Reds went on to make the playoffs the next year and the Pirates were the worst team in the league the next few years with the Orioles not far behind. The Reds bottomed out for a year, but catching up now to 2023, all three teams were expected to be in the basement this season, yet all three are winning a lot and have very bright futures. Major League Baseball is going to see a lot of the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles over the next few years or so. A decade where all three teams bottomed out will finally pay off.

An additional layer is the Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was one of many old school baseball guys who are notorious for a belief in the "unwritten rules" of baseball, which abhors celebrations and abides by retaliatory self policing that used to be more common. Like if Roy Keane was a baseball manager. That it was a fastball in the head area was especially egregious. The way the reds pitcher lobbed a soft pitch into the players hip/thigh is a more typical way to send a message today rather than an old fashioned beanball. Side note, that Reds pitcher was brought into the game specifically for the purpose of hitting that player with both player and coach knowing he would throw one pitch and get ejected. This is not that uncommon and as a kid it was one of my lesser pro athlete fantasies to get called into a game to plunk somebody.

I went to high school with Clint Hurdle. Ok, that means nothing but just thought I would mention it 😁. Go Mustangs!

Y’all need to react to Steve Smith Agent 89. I think this would allow y’all to view football differently because he wasn’t the fastest or strongest, but he won the mental battle. This guy didn’t treat it as a game, he genuinely wanted to murder the guy he was matched up against.

Thank you for the comment Andrew, appreciate it. Not sure whether you’re already in our Discord, but we’ve currently got a special Jomboy video poll that is live. This is one of the ones in the poll too

As far as how reliable Jimmy's lip-reading is, I'd say 80-90% in terms of accuracy (except when he knows and states he's not able to achieve that) and close to 100% in terms of tone and "what's really going on."

Yes there is long history between the teams. And distance wise, the cities are not far from each other on top of it.

The Pirates and Reds play in the same division. Teams in the same division play each other much more often than others. This develops a rivalry between each team in a division, to one degree or another. The Reds/Pirates is probably a mid-level rivalry.

“You’ve got the ball” refers to the idea that the pitcher is in control for the most part during an at-bat. Even the most successful batters will get out 70% of the time, so it’s not a great look for a pitcher to showboat getting a batter out, because it’s expected
