I wonder, had Iglesias not thrown the temper tantrum, if he would have even been suspended. If he had initially been suspended, he could have appealed (presumably) and could have had that ruling overturned with video evidence that he was not involved with the melee. Sure, he would have had to leave that game, but I seriously doubt he would have had to serve any other time off.

There's some crucial context to this that's missing. First, the throw Trout and the Angels took issues with was late in the game, 9th inning I believe. The Mariners were protecting a slim lead. No team, no matter how upset, would EVER intentionally hit someone and put the winning run on base. Second, the Mariners pitcher had several wild pitches before the one that missed Trouts head. It very likely slipped on him. Third, the Mariners just don't intentionally hit other batters ever. They have some of the lowest hit batters numbers in the league under their current manager. They never retaliate, they play very clean. Lastly, Nevin, the manager of the Angels did one of the scummiest things I've ever seen. He put a kid on the mound for his first ever career start, which is supposed to be a special day, and he used him as a pawn. An 'opener' is not a thing in baseball and it made his intentions very very clear. So he put a kid out there for his first start, just trying to make his way in the league, to go out and hit every batter he faces until he gets ejected. Absolutely horrible. As much as I love Trout, he absolutely caused all this to happen too. He could have taken the high road and ended it at the beginning and instead he chose to be vaguely accusatory and rile up his team.
@khure711
@khure711 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, why Nevin only got 10 games is honestly a travesty. He ruined that kids first MLB start and retaliated against a figment of his imagination. How many Mariners have to be hit because you lost a game? The guy is bush league and doesn’t need to be a MLB coach.

An opener + bulk guy relief pitcher strategy is a thing in baseball. Nevin’s “strat” that day was just a malicious scheme.
@ScottServais-poet
@ScottServais-poet Жыл бұрын
@MB DG yeah like a bullpen day kind of thing. He switched the starting pitcher that day to have the opener, and then the next person in was the actual starter. So while yes its technically a strat, that's not what he was doing at all and the malicious intent couldn't be more obvious.

There was a clip circulating towards the end last year of the Angels' commentators saying the M's had a "reputation" for headhunting, which was pretty rich because if you look at how many batters each team hit on the year, the Angels are at the top of the list and the M's are at the bottom.

I totally get the Angels being pissed about that pitch to Trout. He's the best player in the league and has been for a decade. Was it right for Wantz to hit Winker? As for context for missing up, that's a legit reason, most pitchers would rather miss out of the strike zone than in it. If say you're pitching to Trout like this and you want to aim at the high inside corner of the strike zone, if for whatever reason you miss that spot, you'd like to miss out of the zone, because out of the zone its a ball, and that's not the worst thing, if you miss it right in the flat out middle of the zone the liklihood that Trout or any hitter is going to hit that ball really hard is very good. I'm reminded of Pedro Martinez talking about his approach on MLB Network and he was saying basically anytime he was pitching if he was gonna miss he was gonna miss off to the side, that way the hitter doesn't have a chance at any mistake pitches.
@jazzdawg029
@jazzdawg029 Жыл бұрын
The best place to pitch Trout is the upper inside corner of the strike zone. That's why Casey Sandler was pitching there. He was wild the whole outing. In fact after this outing I believe the Mariners medical staff found out Casey was injured and needed surgery. BTW Archie Bradley, the Angel that face-planted hopping the fence, broke his arm.

there's one extra point of context that i don't see ppl pointing out, a pitch did hit jared walsh (angels player) before trouts at bat. or it at least skimmed him (iirc) he took his base but then mariners challenged it and it got called back. on the angels broadcast they replayed it a lot to see what was correct, it was a tough by the footage but you could hear the sound it made from hitting him clearly. ofc angels were mad at the bad call and mariners for challenging it. there was tons of boos in the stadium and it changed the whole tone, so that anger was built up when trout went at bat.

Lorenzen was not trying to hit Upton in that earlier clip, Upton was one of the worst hitters in the league (trust me I know I'm an Angels fan and he was awful) at that point. Either it's intentional and you protect your teammate, or it's an accident and you're a sportsman about it. How are you going to get revenge because a guy was trying to compete? Are we just gonna throw soft stuff to everyone's best hitters and save the hard stuff for guys that suck because it makes less of a difference to the win-loss record they get concussed? I understand it's not pleasant to have a fastball come that close to your face, but it's part of the game he signed a contract to play. Great on guys! Hitting players intentionally still happens more than it should. As I'm sure you have learned there are some stupid unwritten rules (there's videos on it) in the game that cause some players and managers to get way too aggressive. Because hitting a player is something that can be an accident, things can get very tricky and iffy. It's one of the things that drives me nuts. People forget but many of the rules and realities of baseball as it is today were shaped by the death of a player who was hit with a ball in the 1920s. Just because we have head gear now doesn't mean it won't or can't happen again. Players have been hit in the face even recently. I'm honestly shocked we haven't had more serious head injuries. Considering how hard they throw now as well. It's irresponsible to have a manager instigate events like this. I much prefer when the teams simply brawl because almost always they just push each other around and yell. Hard to believe anyone will really get hurt that way. Quick note: I believe you were trying to reference the brawls between the pirates and reds who are division rivals. Quite often the biggest brawls are between in division rivals especially if they are both pushing for the playoffs things can get out of hand quickly.

I think the implementation of the pitch clock has something to do with a rise in HBP and wild pitches in general so far this season. It'll probably be something that needs more time to really track but I'd imagine the added urgency (along with a huge crackdown on how sticky they can make their hands to better grip the ball. Technology that was created to help pitchers not lose control of the ball and hit batters exploited by pitchers for extra spin for nigh unhittable pitches. There's a fine line they arent supposed to go over and pitchers get their hands checked multiple times a game) causes a few inside pitches to go errant.

Winker,Upton, and Toro were more than likely traded because this fight.The same happened to Brad Miller who was explosively violent. It doesn't go with the family clubhouse the Mariner's have built. For the Mariner's "If you make the kids cry, kiss your contract goodbye." JP Crawford stayed because those punches were clean, and he has a golden glove!

Erik Swanson the pitcher who the angels thought was throwing at trout was coming off an injury and it’s why he was talking about sighting in his pitches the pitching coach checking on him.

Angels manager Phil Nevin is a gutless coward who removed the scheduled starter for a goon who came in to throw at Julio and Winker. After this fight he said he hoped the fight would give his team a spark. Instead the Mariners went on a big winning streak and the Angels collapsed. Nevin orchestrated this whole thing and did get suspended, but not long enough. His decisions put players from both sides at risk. As far as the dancing going on on the field the night before, Seattle had been doing that all year after every win, home or away. It was not targeted at the Angels.

There are some longer videos which feature a bunch of brawls, many of them are classics. Yankees-Red Sox 2003 and 2004, Yankees-Orioles that goes into the Yankees dugout, obviously Amir Garrett taking on the entire Pirates dugout by himself which you've already reacted to, Nolan Ryan putting a player 20 years younger than him in a headlock, Dodgers-Padres, and so many others.

A day or so after this happened, someone posted online a picture of a young girl maybe 5 years old who was crying in the area Winker gave the middle finger to. It was regretfully hilarious. And no doubt she didnt recognize the middle finger but was frightened by all the adults yelling at Winker back with F-Bombs. And she has like a Winker t-shirt on to cap it off. Aww baseball. I would just sit back, eat my hotdog and watch the madness.

The Mariners that year were hit by opposing pitchers far more often then Mariners pitchers hit the other team. One of Our All Stars, Tye France was hit over 22 times in that year alone.

There are an increase in hit batsmen due to pitchers having to change their dynamic because of the pitch clock. Their natural rhythms have been disturbed because the commissioner believes that baseball takes up too much time.

As a Mariners fan, this fight was the turning point of our season last year that led the Mariners to finally breaking the longest playoff drought in US Sports. The only downside was that Phil Nevin didn't catch a fist to the face. Dude has no place managing an MLB team. Retaliation like this is bush league crap. You want to return a bean ball in the same game, fine, but it doesn't carry over day to day. Shitty way to run your team. Joke show manager for a joke show franchise.

At the time of the brawl, the Angels were a quite a few games up on the Mariners who weren't even above 0.500 at the time. The Mariners then went on the longest wins streak of the season by any team and broke their playoff drought, while the Angels collapsed and didn't even have a winning season.

The Mariners absolutely did not start it. There's a zero percent chance that pitch at Trout was intentional. You simply would never throw at someone in that situation in a close game. It was just simply a bad pitch that the Angels got sensitive about

The angels pitcher Lorenzen hitting in the guy in the head on a previous game was a really bad day for him. he walked like 7 and hit 2 in 3 innings. Had absolutely no control at all that day. I don't even think the pitch was set up in when he hit them.

Another interesting not about the brawl: Coming into the season, the Mariners were supposed to be really good and were expected to break their 20 year playoff drought, the longest in American sports. The Angels were expected to be mediocre and most people didn't think they had a shot at the postseason. This game was around 50 games into the season, and at the time the scrpit was completely flipped. The Angels were playing very well and the Mariners had been pretty awful all year, the hope of them making the playoffs was pretty much gone. Immediately after the brawl though, the Angels hit a major bump, started playing very poorly, and never recovered. The Mariners on the other hand completely turned it around and went on a hot streak, going on a 14 game winning streak shortly after, and was one of the best teams in baseball the rest of the season The M's ended up making the playoffs, the Angels didn't. It seemed to have an opposite effect on both teams. Angels completely fell apart after the brawl, while it electrified the Mariners and immediately turned their season around.

there are some unwritten rules of baseball that make a lot of sense... and then there's the batshit crazy stuff that nobody knows where it came from. Some grudges can be personal like when harper got beaned like 2 years after the actual event that pissed that specific pitcher off. The pitcher wasn't even on the same team as he was when it happened.

I always laugh when players go back into the dugout and try to release/anger manage through ripping it apart😭😂 Like okay~ okay~ let it out big fella, as long as we’re not hurting anyone😅😂 Separately, idk about most other pitchers, but I would give benefit of the doubt to Ohtani if his pitch comes towards the hitter. Simply because he usually goes for shutout innings and then switches straight to hitting which I’d imagine can run an arm in much more ragged faster and prone to letting pitches get away from him when he switches after hitting.

In baseball players will defend players by hitting someone on the other team. It's an unwritten rule. So if a star on 1 team gets hit bet your bottom dollar the next day or even a month later the star of the other team will get hit

the Mariners do that dance when they win no matter who its against. The Angels were the only team who ever took it personally because their manager is sort of a douche bag who used to do steroids when he played (never admitted it but he went from being at the end of his career and bad to gaining 30lbs of muscle in one off-season so its pretty obvious)
@EmmaJaworski

When you said youve been watching the angels and their pitching has been sketchy and maybe 5-6 hit batters, ill just say this: Hit by pitches arent super uncommon especially when youre pitching at such high velo and adding spin to the ball. It can easily get away from you. Youll generally see a hit pitch every couple of games, sometimes every other game. Most times its not intentional, but you can generally tell based on the situation/context, and what body part got hit/aimed at.
