I’d say in college a 57 yard kick has a 30-40% chance of going through. A proven kicker who’s done it before can make it 60% of the time

You didn't touch on it, which is completely understandable, but Rod Bramblett is the voice calling the game in the last clip. He was Auburn's radio announcer for many years starting with baseball and coming over to football. He was literally "The Voice of the Auburn Tigers". In 2019, he and his wife were tragically killed in a wreck while sitting at a red light at a busy, and well known intersection in Auburn, Alabama. For us Auburn alumni and fans, this makes the kick-six call even more special. RIP Rod & Paula Bramblett

I grew up with Rod thru high school and Auburn. He was very funny, smart and kind as well as talented. I will never forget his incredible, hilarious Phil Donahue impression in a high school skit. We lost more than just a great announcer when he and Paula were killed. @birch5757 The strip fumble right before halftime by Nick Fairley is what I am assuming you mean. I didn't know Auburn would win because I didn't think the refs would allow Auburn to win. They had already thrown some bullcrap flags on Auburn... especially the personal foul on Fairley for celebrating a play in a way that is done all the time, after he got his first sack I think.

I will always have a soft spot for the 2005 game against Uga too. That one will always be a fav. The way it was 4th and long and Brandon Cox hit Devin Aromashodu was just special. And the heads up play by my favorite Auburn receiver of all time, Courtney Taylor, to recover the fumble in the end zone.

The chances of him making the kick weren’t good, but the reason for attempting it is that it still gave them a better chance than a 40+ yard Hail Mary. And what *actually* happened was extremely unlikely so it really didn’t factor into the decision at all (just like the slim chances of a pick six wouldn’t factor into the decision to throw a Hail Mary)

Thank you for pointing out the possibility of a pick six. People question the kick because of what happened, but only because of happened. The possibility of a fumble, interception, or worst of all- qb injury because of how long he has to sit back- is just too much to risk. Normally the kick either makes it, or it's overtime. The kick was a smart call... the coverage was not.

Heh. Pro-level kickers have gotten relatively better at kicks over 50. College kickers are notoriously unreliable, and (with few exceptions) hitting a 57 yarder would be extremely unlikely for most. Alabama only attempted the kick because time was going to run out.

How? Auburn essentially had FSU's playbook. Their QB coach Damian Craig was at FSU the year before and he was relaying Jimbo's hand signals to the defense. That's the only way they were able to stop FSU's offense for a little while. That's why FSU started blocking Auburn's vision with towels from the sidelines. As soon as they did, FSU owned Auburn. No way can you say, with a straight face, that Auburn deserved to win the title.

Alabama had over 100 yards more in total offense than Auburn, not sure that Auburn "deserved" to win as you put it but they did. They had beaten Georgia on a miracle in an earlier game and it took another miracle for the them to get past Alabama. Their luck ran out against FSU, unfortunately for them. I will say the info from Jeff Spain above is interesting. It took a miracle for Alabama not to win 3 national titles in a row, it is still disappointing even now.

MSU has a lot of magical finishes I think are worth watching. Miracle at the big house is also a great finish to a famous rivalry that ended on a special teams play like the kick 6. The Michigan State Spartans defeated their in state rival Michigan Wolverines while never having a lead before the clock hit 0:00 MSU vs Iowa in the 2015 Big Ten championship, it was a defensive struggle and MSU's final drive took, 13 minutes, 22 plays, 4 4thd down conversions, and a 2nd effort push to cross the goal line. "Little giants" where MSU beat top ranked Notre Dame on a trick play in overtime, scoring a TD instead of a tying FG (which would have lost the game if they didn't convert).

What makes this play even crazier is that arguably the bigger miracle happened two weeks before that kept Auburn in contention for the kick-six to matter. The Georgia bulldogs had made a 21 point 4th quarter comeback to take a one-point lead with under a minute to-go. Auburn was backed up inside their own 25 and had a 4th & 18 led by a quarterback who threw less than 10 passes a game... Under pressure, he throws up a desperate heave directly to three Georgia defenders with no Auburn receivers in range to make a play on the ball. The game was over. Until the defenders fought with each other and tipped the ball up. And I guess that infamous Jordan-Hare Voodoo took care of the rest

One further bit of context that is rather important...the Alabama line was made up of special teamers who were good at blocking but had little or no experience in covering kick returns, such as evading blockers or tackling. That's a big reason why Davis made it into the clear so quickly.

Definitely on our radar, promise it’s not personal against the Bama. Given Bama’s history we have to pick a winner eventually! Thanks for the this one, have got it added to our list to watch.

I grew up in an Auburn family (though I actually attended Georgia Tech) and I’ve continued to follow Auburn football because of how much it means to the rest of my family. I remember watching that iron bowl. Being a Tech fan, I’m well versed that I never let optimism creep into my football and the whole game, I was waiting for Bama to open up what I knew they could do. It was a pleasant surprise when they had so much trouble with the kicking game and when Auburn kept things so close. Going into the kick, I told my wife that I figured the game was over, either Bama would hit the FG or take the win in OT (I couldn’t imagine Auburn beating both Bama and u(sic)GA (who I despise more than anyone else) in the same season). Watching that play, I was seated up until the returner made his cut at the sideline; I then jumped up and was starting something like “what the heck!” repeatedly. After the play, I was leaving against the wall trying to catch my breath (I’m asthmatic) just waiting for the replay booth to show he stepped out or the refs to manufacture a holding call. I remember sinking back into my seat when the touchdown was official. We had watched the game live, but I had forgotten my parents always DVR’d the game so they could ff through commercials. I called them immediately after the game, my dad answered the phone with “Don’t say a word” and immediately hung up. I had to wait about an hour before they called me back so we could discuss what had happened. Iirc, both of my brothers were at their house watching with them (we lived 9 hours away so were unable to do so). Just an amazing day that almost made up for me having to watch that Athens “school” beat my Yellow Jackets earlier in the day. Almost.

Wow, another recommended video reviewed! Great content as always lads! This game clip gives every sports fan goosebumps, even more so when you know all of the context behind it. As far as kick distance is concerned, I would say anything beyond a 48 yarder is an awesome kick in college football. Also while watching, they will occasionally put a red or green line across the field to give a reference point of where a make-able kick is likely to occur from(this is added in addition to the standard yellow first down and grey line of scrimmage markers). Also in American football unlike rugby you have to remember the goal post is at the back of the end zone instead of the front and the ball must be snapped back about 6 yards so it is usually the yard marker +16 yards (example kick from 41 yard line=57 yard kick).

Not too long ago, 2:00 wasn't much time at all. It was kind of rare for a team to make a comeback in that time. Offenses got pretty wild starting in the 2000s, and started spreading throughout all of college football A lot of SEC teams didn't start going that way until around 2010ish

Hey lads, I’m an Auburn fan and I still get goose bumps and tears in my eyes watching this. What the video doesn’t discuss is the kicker who attempted the kick was making them from 60 in warm ups 3.5 hours earlier. However, the temp had dropped about 20 degrees F and he was hitting those 60 yarders after about 20 kicks at differing lengths. So he was really warmed up. Now he had to come in cold and try it. I was surprised he hit it 56 yards to be honest. Also not mentioned was Auburn subbed more than just Chris Davis. They replaced the team on the field with the punt return team. So when Davis starts right the entire return team knew he was going to go left and they were able to setup the blocks differently. If you can find the original CBS call, Gary Danielson discusses that and a few other things, but hearing Rod Bramblett from Auburn radio doing the call is even more magical. Thanks again and War Eagle!

Auburn fan. I was driving back from a job and could only listen to the bama broadcast. I nearly wrecked screaming. I can still hear the disbelief in Eli Gold's voice. Also, you had to be a student to understand Bramlett's comment "They're not gonna keep em off the field tonight".

The Alabama coach had said in an interview, he did not think he could beat Auburn in Overtime. That’s why I decided to kick a field goal. Personally I am not a college football fan, that statement was power. He put the blame totally on himself and not the players. Nick won my respect when I heard that interview. On a light note, was that the game an Auburn stole Nick’s hat off his Head?

I don't know if there's a good video compilation, but the Bear Bryant comment about "that cow college" reminded me of a coach with some hilarious cracks on rival teams - Steve Spurrier. Just a quick one: On a fire at the Auburn football dorm that burned 20 books “The real tragedy was that 15 hadn’t been colored yet.”

Not rare in the NFL anymore. Most teams have a kicker than can make 55-60 yrs these days. 23 % of all FG kicked last years were over 50 yrs and 72% of them were made. I believe 5 fG at 60 or further were made last yr.

This game ending is more insane if you understand that most long term football fans had never even seen a missed field goal being returned or run back for any yards at all and didn't even know it was a legal play. It was shocking to see it unfold.
