The Iowa Oaks is the old name of the Iowa Cubs. They became the Cubs Triple-A affiliate in the 80s and changed their name to the Cubs at that time. The I-Cubs are doing a series of Throwback Days this season where they are wearing their old Oaks uniforms

Lifelong Cubs fan. PCA is so fun to watch. He's back with the big league club. He recently scored from 1B on a single. The guy is electric. As far as the minors, I think they usually play 5-6 game series. That's long enough to build up some hostility. For comparison, the majors play, on average, 3 game series.

They would never intentionally walk him there after throwing at him. Triple A baseball can be tense. You have a mix of guys who will just barely miss the big leagues, guys like the pitcher who are trying to get back to the big leagues at 35, and young rising stars who need more work. The difference is pay is the main driving factor for guys who didn't sign big bonus, which is most. At most a Triple A player will make 100k, and that's just former big leagues and rising stars. The minimum annual salary for a major leaguer is 700k. So you go from making like 750 a game to 5k a game (triple a had less games so it's not 7X). So when a young rising stars goes off on a team it really hurts a lot of guys chances to make the big leagues even if they were slim to being with.

Besides Iowa reviving their "Oaks" nickname for a Throwback Jersey Day, there's another reason uniforms vary from game to game. Each team's starting pitcher decides which variant of their home or away jersey his team will wear that day. If a team's away jerseys include a gray version (pretty standard), or a red jersey with gray pants, or pinstripes, etc., you might see variation from one day to the next.

If you want to see a little bit of the love affair the U.S had with baseball, you should check out the When It Was A Game , series. 3 parts, covering baseball from 1925 through the 1960's, but solely from 16mm film taken by the players and fans (remastered and colorized), set against literary readings etc.. Each is about an hour, and features narration and reading from some pretty famous actors, as well as player interviews. It covers a lot of the nuance of the game, those little superstitions and unwritten rules, the romance of the game.

The general tradition of throwing at folks generally occurs in the following situations: 1) A player on the other team does something that can injure a teammate (hitting with a pitch, spiking someone on a double play breakup, running over a catcher), which are all illegal now or 2) A player does something that shows up the other team, like running around the bases too slow on a home run, stealing a base late with a huge lead. Essentially anything that a team deems unsporting. Most baseball fans are very much in favor of the first category because it's the way baseball polices players who do dangerous things, and it's viewed as protecting and standing up for your teammate. Most baseball fans aren't in favor of the second category because that's just players being soft and whiny about losing. When retaliating or sending a message, you generally try to aim at their butt or hip area, lower back. You never throw high, and throwing high behind the head is especially bad because most players instinctively back up when they see a pitch coming close to them, which means they're likely to back right up into the ball and get hit in the head. Also, it is NOT tradition to throw at someone because they're hitting well against your team. That's absolutely horrible form, and usually gets retaliation of its own.

It a tradition as far back as chewing and spitting tabaco but the guise of tradition wont protect them from the local, state, federal laws if the pitcher purposely harms/klls another player. Having said that, it doesn't hold a candle to Hockey. 😁

I've been watching baseball for 57 years, so maybe I have something of value to say concerning pitchers working the inside of the plate (and that's what the pros will call it). When a batter gets a flyby or clocked by one of these pitches, considerations must be given for pitchers with less than stellar control, batters crowding the plate to get better coverage.of it, and the mental maturity of the managers involving these petty beanball feuds that sometimes last for years. With most of it considered, any sane person must assume that beanballs hurled towards the noggin are a mistake of some sort. Either thrown terribly or, if ordered by the higher-ups, a mistake in moral judgement. I love your show, guys. Later

The biggest pus--es in all of sports are pitchers in leagues with designated hitters (now everyone) who throw at batters while knowing they aren't going to have to stand at the plate themselves.

Typically a major league team only needs 4 outfielders. The Cubs have Bellinger, Happ, and Suzuki for the every day lineup. Besides that, there’s Mike Tauchman as a “backup”. However, Mike Tauchman is a f’n stud. Great guy. Stubborn as a mule. Great eye at the plate. Pathologically in the pitcher’s head. Clutch as anyone in the league. In order for Pete Crow-Armstrong to get past Tauchman, there’d need to be injuries or one of the Cubs’ 4 outfielders would have slump something horrific.

To be fair the tradition of throwing at batters started in an Era in which pitchers were throwing much slower, still hurt but less deadly. Imo the reasons teams choose to throw at batters now a days is petty and dumb at best.

If a guy is struggling at the plate or something they might send him down to try and let him work it out on lower quality pitching. Its usually a timing issue or something they just have to figure out. Its better than just letting a guy ruin his career by continuously struggling w no answers. Guys go down and usually come back up within a couple months. Sometimes they get injured and need to gradually come back so they go down to the minors to get that workout in.

Throwing at him because he’s hitting well against you is just petty. Yes, batters absolutely get walked on purpose at times. Very often, it’s when a power hitter is at bat with a runner on base. They’d rather give him 1st base than run the risk of him hitting it out of the park and scoring multiple runs. If the next batter is less impressive at bat, it can give the defensive team some advantages. You guys have watched a video where the pitcher intentionally walks David Ortiz (big Papi). He already knows what they’re doing, so he starts walking even before the final pitch reaches the plate. 😂

Part of what makes it "tradition" lies in the fact that the origins of the game weren't part of gentleman's culture. It was the Irish and German working class immigrants and first gen Americans that played the game for their company bosses as part of recreation and sport. Gentlemen played tennis or polo or croquet. I'm sure you understand the working class tenets of loyalty and togetherness. Standing up for your brethren is necessary because it's your squad against the world, whereas gentleman's games were more individual. Both types of games required adherence to the rules, but cheating for gentleman was bad because it broke rules. Cheating in baseball was bad because it affected the team. Add in unwritten rules like not showing up your opponent or "respecting the game" carried penalties just like breaking the written rules. The difference is in the arbiters of those violations. You show up my teammate, that's a violation. I am the arbiter, I'll wing one past your face. If you violate the unwritten rules, and are punished for it, and don't LIKE the punishment, that's when we fight. That mindset has been passed down from player to player for ~170 years. I see it in MLB, and I see it in amateur leagues. Right or wrong, it's part of the fabric of the game.

MLB pitchers, if they decide to retaliate and intentionally throw at a batter; they have good control to throw the ball exactly where they want to hit the batter. It’s still stupid but, it is traditional to have your team’s back when the other team is doing disrespectful things.

If you want to know how bad throwing at a hitter can be, look at the career of Tony Conigliaro. His career was ruined. A pitcher, Carl Mays, hit Ray Chapman in the face in a game in 1920. Chapman died.

Also, to answer your question about why PCA was back in the minors. He wasn't playing every day in the majors, and that can be detrimental to a top prospects development. The Cubs sent him back down so that he could play every day. He's back up with the big team now and playing more frequently.

The only tradition I know of is throwing at a player if their team has intentionally thrown at one of yours in the previous inning. I think it's all stupid, but that's what seems to happen in the most "tradition" sense. You tried to take out one of our guys, we'll try to take out one of yours. The issue here of throwing at someone intentionally just because they're playing well is not a tradition, as far as I know. It's just a frustrated pitcher and/or team.

US sports teams (probably worldwide custom) from peewee to professional usually have two uniforms/jerseys - one light and one dark. Frequently they wear the dark ones when they're the "away" team and light ones when they're the "home" team. You always know who is away and who is home by how their names are listed - it's always "Team A [away] at Team B [home]" or "Cubs at Orioles" (Cubs are away) or "Cowboys at Texans" (Cowboys are away), etc.

If you hurt our guy, we’ll hurt your guy. Alls fair, then the feud is done. It’s within the rules of the game, like a hockey fight. After that, if either team keeps the slow fight going, that’s a dick move, and most umpires will eject you, or it just goes to fists.

Automatic ejection and it's a violation period if just thrown around the head. Just becuz it happens in a sporting event will not protect any pitcher from being arrested and or sued if it's found to be intentional and makes contact. It is asslt period.

No sane baseball fan likes Pitchers throwing at hitters intentionally. Well and some boomers do. But anyway it is crazy and super childish. It’s also crazy when players overreact on clearly non intentional hit by pitches.
