You guys need to check out the FIRST OUT before the final out of the Mark Burhele perfect game. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZycn3-vYqZjp6s It's incredible and he saved the perfect game. Wise was also put in there as s defensive replacement at the start of the inning.

To my knowledge, a fielder has never made an error on the last out of a perfect game, but the first base umpire cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game. On what would have been the final out, he called the runner safe at first after a ground ball. Replay showed that he was clearly out, but this was a few years before replay reviews were around, so he didn't get his perfect game.

@@Ryouskistill doesnt beat Pittsburgh Pirates Harvey Haddix's 12 inning perfect game that he lost in the bottom of the 13th inning on an error. He then lost the no-hitter and the game when Joe Adcock hit a what should have been a 3 run homer but a base running error by Hank Aaron caused it to be ruled a one run double. Just an amazing feat....12 perfect innings.

Perfect games have been lost on the final out in a number of ways. Hits obviously, but also hit by pitch (Hooks Wiltse, 1908), walk (Milt Pappas, 1972; he was livid he didn't get the call on the 3-2 pitch, but *did* maintain the no-hittet), blown ump call (Armando Galarraga), and simply through the pitcher's own team not scoring followed by losing it in extra innings: Pedro Martinez in 1995 gave up a 10th inning double but hung on for a 1-0 win, while Harvey Haddix lost his perfect game -- and also lost the game -- in the 13th inning, 1-0. There's also, from 1917, Ernie Shore's "perfect game in relief". The starting pitcher for the Red Sox that day was Babe Ruth, who walked the first batter and got ejected for arguing the call. Ernie Shore came in, picked off the runner, and got the next 26 batters out as well. A similar performance came from Cy Young, for whom the best pitcher award is named. He walked the first batter of a game, then got the next 27 out. What's especially remarkable here is he'd already thrown an actual perfect game, so he was one walk away from having 2.

His No Hitter was in Philly v. the Reds & he only walked one batter (if he didn’t walk that batter, it would’ve been another Perfect Game in one season.) His No Hitter was also the 2nd ever No Hitter in postseason history at the time (Don Larson threw a Perfect Game in the World Series) Hope you two are doing great. rough outline of what happened with the Expos: The Montreal Expos were Canada's first MLB team predating the Blue Jays by 7 years. They spent most of their history being mediocre until the early 90's when it looked like they could be a World Series contender. The only problem was their peak year was 94 and the player's strike meant there was no World Seires that year. The Expos were never able to return to that form and the team was moved to Washington DC and reanemd The Nationals in 2004.

Just to point out, in the early 80s, the Expos looked like they were about to break out into a true contender. Names like Gary Carter and Andre Dawson were just hitting their peak, and they managed to get some good pitching talent together. They made it to their first and only playoffs in 81, but lost game 5 to the Dodgers 2-1 for the pennant off a 9th inning clutch hit by Rick Monday. In Expos lore, the game came to be known as Black Monday.

My two primary thoughts: 1) Very disappointed where Martinez's perfect game clip was cut. One of my favourite announcer moments from David Van Horne: "El Presidente, El Perfecto!" 2) Dallas Braden's perfect game was thrown on Mother's day. His mother died about 10 years beforehand. The hug between him and his grandmother in the post-game celebration is legendary.

notes on two of them, just because: 1. The Randy Johnson one is unique in that lots of people all over the country saw it happen. The Braves games used to (might still be, don't have cable to know for sure) broadcast on TBS because the owner of the station owned the team. TBS is a big national cable channel so Randy Johnson being on, going against the perennial contender Braves, you had a lot of folks watching. So that was kinda special, I certainly wouldn't have seen it otherwise. 2. Mark Buehrle (pronounced "burly," btw) is a fun, unique baseball player and worth taking a look at sometime. I'd say he's a Hall of Very Good player who deserves to be remembered, if only for being a soft tossing, fast-working, sort-of-heir to Greg Maddux. But also he made one of the best fielding plays by a pitcher ever, after kicking a grounder he made a between the legs, no-look toss to first on the move. But back to his perfect game, you saw the last out of the 9th, but you HAVE to look up the first out of the 9th- a bobbled but ultimately robbed home run to preserve the perfecto.

The pitcher Kenny Rogers' nickname was "The Gambler," after the song of the same name by the singer Kenny Rogers. I saw Dallas Braden's perfect game in person. It was on Mother's Day. Braden was raised by his grandmother, and she was in the stands. After the final out, she tried to get onto the field by climbing over the top of the dugout. The security guards stopped her, but then when they found out who she was, they opened a gate and let her through to hug her grandson in the greatest moment of his career. My favorite perfect game is Dallas Braden's, because I was there when it happened, and the A's were my team. The greatest has to be Don Larsen's because it happened in the World Series.

Randy Johnson was 40 when he threw his perfect game against the Braves. Even at that age, when he was on with that slider, dude was just un-hittable. So lucky to have watched him pitch when i lived in the PNW with the Mariners and then later in his years with the Diamondbacks. I was at the game in May of 2001 when he struckout 20 against the Reds, gave up 3 hits and 1 run through 9 innings, in what turned out to be one of the first of just many magical moments that baseball season winning that game in 11 innings, but in a year of also so much tragedy after 9/11/2001.

Y'all have to watch a video about Armando Galarraga's near-perfect game! He was on the 27th batter of the game, and a ground ball was hit to the 1st baseman. Galarraga went over to cover first and caught it and clearly beat the runner by at least half a step, but the ump called the runner safe. The ump himself later admitted he was wrong, and got very emotional talking about how he alone ruined Galarraga's perfect game. Galarraga handled it gracefully, and got the next batter out, but people have been asking the MLB for years to change it to a perfect game so he can be in the history books! (Though his "imperfect game" is arguably more famous than many of the actual perfect games"

4:20 From what I know, a fielder has never cost a perfect game. But I do know an umpire has. On June 2, 2010, Armando galarraga had 26 perfect outs. The ball was rolled over to 2nd base, and Jason Donald ran his hardest to first. The throw beat him by quite a marginal amount, but first base umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe. Everyone was stunned, even Donald. Back then, they had no replay review and the game remains in the books as a complete game shutout, not a perfect game. This game is often referred to as the “28-out perfect game.” Joyce later admitted his mistake and rightfully apologized to galarraga.

8:42 Pronounced: Burr Lee You really need to watch the full 9th inning. Journeyman White Sox outfielder DeWayne Wise, who was brought into the game in the 9th inning for defensive purposes, crashes into the wall and pulls back a home run. He juggles the ball but manages to hold onto it as he tumbles to the ground, saving Buehrle's perfect game. It's one of the greatest catches in baseball history.

There's a great documentary that MLB Network did that's been since uploaded to KZbin called Triumph and Tragedy: The 1994 Montreal Expos. It goes over their sordid past, the would-be championship season that got shortened by a strike, and how that essentially killed baseball in the city afterwards. Definitely worth a watch, and should MLB ever expand again, I do hope they're #1 on the list.

One thing I have always found interesting is that it’s not always the big name, #1 starters who have thrown perfect games. A few of the ones you just showed were thrown by pitchers whose careers were otherwise pretty unremarkable or short lived. They are super rare, but I’ve always thought it’s cool to think that it could be accomplished by anyone on a given day.

Two things that are interesting about "perfect games": 1) Most of the greatest pitchers in MLB history never got that close to having one; and many who had one will only be remembered for throwing a perfect game. It is as much about odds as it is skill, and good pitching is often about knowing when to walk or to give up a an easy pitch. 2) Historically, they tend to clump together. You have a pack of them in the mid-to-late 60's. Then none for over a decade. A few in the 80's. Then another grouping in the mid-to-late 90's. And then another grouping in the late-00's and early 2010's. Without another until last year. Then tend to come at a point when the something changes about the dynamic of hitting-and-pitching in the league.

And boy howdy, were those early Expos teams bad. But it was fun to watch. Rusty "le Grande Orange" Staub became an early childhood hero. Ron Hunt trying to set "hit by pitch" records. Ron Fairly being a not too shabby pinch hitter. Claude Mouton announcing John....Boc..A..BELLA! re: the Expos - there is a great documentary on them called "The Perfect Storm - Story of the 1994 Montreal Expos" (~23 mins long) the short version to lead up to it - they joined MLB in 1969, they were initially very popular until ~the mid 80s, when cracks in the team began to show : a new group of owners in the early-90s struggled to pay the bills, the stadium they were in was terrible, cold and falling apart, but the baseball side was putting together an exciting young squad, and in 1994, they were the best team in baseball by MILES .. so if they could go on a run in the playoffs - maybe even win the world series - they would have the $$$ to keep this young, aggressive team together and perhaps get a long-needed replacement stadium built. instead, the season was cancelled in August, the playoff run never happened, the team's finances caved in on itself, and the wheels fell off from there. (from a long-suffering Expos fan, who misses his team dearly)

Other than the Armando Galarraga would-be perfect game that many other commenters have mentioned, the other most recent near-perfect game was one thrown by Max Scherzer when he was with the Washington Nationals in 2015. With two outs in the 9th, Scherzer's 2-2 pitch hit Pirates batter Jose Tabata. Some fans were pissed off that Tabata didn't try particularly hard to get out of the way of the pitch; Scherzer dismissed that idea, saying that Tabata's job as a hitter was to get on base, and he was just doing his job. Scherzer got the next guy out to complete the no-hitter. A few others have also mentioned Harvey Haddix's 12 perfect innings in a 0-0 game in 1959, where he gave up a run in the bottom of the 13th to lose the game. Still, an incredible performance. Other perfect game trivia: In his 1981 perfect game, Len Barker did not reach a three-ball count to any of the 27 hitters he faced. Addie Joss of the Cleveland Naps threw a perfect game on October 2, 1908, with his team tied for the lead in a three-way pennant race and only 4 games left to play. Joss achieved perfection on only 74 pitches, an average of less than three pitches per hitter. Not a perfect game, but still amazing: on June 11 and June 15, 1938, Johnny Vander Meer threw two consecutive no-hitters, the only pitcher to ever do so in 154 years of Major League baseball.

Yes, we've seen final outs missed for the perfect game foiled. About 12 years ago a first base umpire screwed up and called a runner safe when they were undeniably out. This was before review and baseball came down later and said that a perfect game requires that not only the players be perfect but that the umpires be perfect too. The Matt Cain 2012 perfect game is still my favorite and I think the best. You should watch the 27 out compilation for that one to get the best feel for why it was so good. His was the most efficient perfect game in MLB history, least number of pitches to achieve. It really was a remarkable gem.

There was talk in 2012 of what was wrong with baseball, what was wrong with hitting, all the perfect games were cheapening the feat. Then everything settled back to normal -- no perfect games for an entire decade until a very journeyman pitcher named Domingo German threw one for the Yankees just last year, and German isn't even in the majors any more. Baseball is weird.

Also, to answer your question about perfect games being broken up by errors. It's never happened by a defensive player on the 27th out as far as I know. There's a very famous game that was umpire error that took away a perfect game, Armando Galaraga (probably butchered the spelling). Max Scherzer had a perfect game into the 9th inning in 2015, and hit a batter. And I think Clayton Kershaw's no hitter was also only not a perfect game because of an error if i remember correctly. But the error happened somewhat early in the game, i think like the 4th or 5th inning. There's been over 300 no hitters so I'm sure some of them, as well as all of the other nearly no hitters come close, but those are the 3 big ones that I remember from the last 15 years

The amazing thing about Roy Halladay's perfect game is that later that year he'd pitch only the second no-hitter in postseason history (though not a perfect game)...

Another 🔥 Reaction. In 2014 Clayton Kershaw was perfect through 6 innings. A throwing error to start the seventh inning allowed a baserunner. He was then perfect till the end of the game. 28 hitters, only one reached on a throwing error. Not perfect.

The distance from home plate to 1st is 90 feet (30 yards), that is a long way. The ball is traveling around a 100 mph off the bat, and thrown at 90 mph from the filder. It's also 90 feet between bases. It is very difficult to beat out an infield hit.

I'm a Mets fan so I naturally dislike the Yankees but boy do they have an amazing history that i could never deny. Throwing a perfect game in the World Series is about the greatest single game performance you can ever have. It's akin to the Geoff Hurst hat-trick, and Mbappe hat-trick (except they lost) in the world cup final, Tom Brady coming back from 28-3 in the super bowl, or to go back to baseball, Bill Mazeroski hitting a walk off home run in game 7 of the World Series. These types of games are once in a lifetime, let alone once in a career. Absolute bonkers to throw a perfect game in the World Series. I can confidently say that will never happen in our lifetime or even our grandchildren's lifetime.

Expos were the best team only in 1994 (77-40, best record in MLB) and the strike ruined their chances. Other than that, the Expos only made the postseason in 1981 on a really weird split season layout (this time a strike helped them). After 1994 they sucked fore several years until the team was sold, moved to Washington, DC and became the Nationals (and finally won a championship in 2019)

Yeah I think the league wouldn’t mind if German’s PG gets forgotten. Also, just think most players will run between 16-18 mph while most fielders can throw the ball anywhere from 70-100 mph depending on the situation.

Larsen still has the only perfect game in World Series history. The only other no-hitter in World Series history was a combined no-hitter by the Astros staff in the 2022 World Series against the Phillies and the only other postseason no-hitter was a near-perfect game by Roy Halladay of the Phillies in Game 1 of the 2010 NLDS against the Reds. And yes, that was a typo. The guy's name is MIKE Witt. He's the brother of another pitcher, Bobby Witt, who himself is the father of Royals young star Bobby Witt, Jr. Buehrle is pronounced like Burnley without the N.

The catcher dosent get enough credit for his role in these scenarios, at least in the old days he does all the leg work, he studies the batters tendencies and pretty much Quarterbacks the game with his pitch calls...Now-a-days there is someone in the clubhouse who does the metrics for the catcher in most cases.

I was at the Kenny Rogers perfect game in 1994 for the Rangers. There were some incredible plays to preserve the perfecto throughout. There may be a video on that. You usually don't get a perfect game without a few stellar defensive plays. In fact, the play I remember most is the first play in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kH-cfWCVlt9pbrM

Lol i'm commenting as the video goes on, so this is like my 3rd comment, but the distance from home to first is 90 feet, 30 yards, or for you metric people, about 27.5 meters. The fastest players get down that line to first in about 4 seconds. on a slow hit ball it takes about 2 seconds for the ball to get to the infielder (less for a sharply hit ball), maybe 1.5-1.8 seconds for the fielder to field it and throw to first. on very rare occasions the ball is hit much slower and/or the runner is especially fast and you get infield hits. The infielders have timing mechanisms in their heads though after fielding thousands of balls. a lot of times the play will look somewhat close because these fielders have become so accustom to the timing of different runners and purposely don't overextend themselves, it's routine for them. in most cases a ground ball on the infield (in the vicinity of a fielder, not talking about balls in the holes) is just a routine play for major league players.

10:54 The Mariners are FAMOUS for not providing run support for world class pitching. Felix Hernandez is one of the best pitchers of his era, but he never got to start a playoff game because the Mariners were so terrible during his tenure. They could NEVER generate offense when the pitching was excellent. It's been a curse of the ballclub for a long time and is even rearing its head again with the current roster. Felix belongs in the Hall of Fame on pure pitching talent, but will probably never make it because the teams he was on were so god damned terrible for his entire career.

Max Scherzer was 1 strike away from a perfect game against Pittsburgh. Scherzer threw a curveball inside & the hitter leaned into the pitch, taking it off the elbow ruining Scherzer's perfect game. He still got a no-hitter though.

A perfect game is like a lottery win; against all odds and very random. For instance, the stars aligned for Dallas Braden even though he was only a fairly good pitcher. His major talent was keeping runners from stealing and getting batters to hit catchable fly balls. The fly ball talent mattered a lot since he stuck out only six in the perfect game. His lifetime WHIP was 1.325, although he was improving before a big career ending injury. Of course being a vary good pitcher helps greatly in these things, but Braden barley qualified as one of those. No shade thrown here, just the facts...as I see 'em.

Stolen from a reddit post, the nine/ten times a perfect game was ruined by an error: June 13, 1905 - Christy Mathewson, New York Giants vs. Chicago Cubs (fielding error by Bill Dahlen with one out in the 4th inning, and fielding error by Billy Gilbert with one out in the 6th inning) September 5, 1908 - Nap Rucker, Brooklyn Superbas vs. Boston Doves (three errors) July 1, 1920 - Walter Johnson, Washington Senators at Boston Red Sox (fielding error by Bucky Harris with no outs in the 7th inning) September 3, 1947 - Bill McCahan, Washington Senators at Philadelphia Athletics (throwing error by Ferris Fain with one out in the 2nd inning) July 19, 1974 - Dick Bosman, Cleveland Indians vs. Oakland Athletics (throwing error by Bosman with two outs in the 4th inning) June 27, 1980 - Jerry Reuss, Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants (throwing error by Bill Russell with two outs in the 1st inning) August 15, 1990 - Terry Mulholland, Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants (throwing error by Charlie Hayes with no outs in the 7th inning) July 10, 2009 - Jonathan Sánchez, San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres (fielding error by Juan Uribe with one out in the 8th inning) June 18, 2014 - Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies (throwing error by Hanley Ramirez with no outs in the 7th inning) There's also Jim Joyce's "mental error" costing Armando Galarraga a perfect game. This was the only one on the last pitch of the game, so you can almost say "it's never happened before, except for this one sad time." In my mind, Galarraga has thrown a perfect game. Fuck MLB.
