@@Patrix299 It was more significant and important for Germany though. Since their army was limited to (I think) 100 000 men after WW1, they had to compensate for that through better training. In the early days of the Weimar Republic their intention was to set up a highly trained core army to fasten up the process of a later rearmament. Also the way of conducting war on the German side required that kind of training. As mentioned in the video, the German soldier was more flexible in service in order to quickly adapt to the requirements of the battles, a principle called "Führen mit Auftrag". And this required higher combat and leadership knowledge.

The lesson most great powers in 1918 learn from the war is that the better trained soldier still dies from artillery. A better trained soldier you can't replace is still going to lose you the war. At this point, it's the trained conscript armies that dominate Europe.
@youraveragescotsman71193 жыл бұрын
@@SusCalvin Not everyone learned that. The British still kept a small, highly professional force. This was the BEF and later many of those former members of the BEF would go on to train as Commandos, which were bloody excellent. The French and Germans may have kept huge, conscript armies, but the Brits still preferred having smaller, more professional forces. The idea worked, as the Brits would win any Infantry vs Infantry fight against the Germans, only losing when Tanks showed up to push them away. Then came the excellent British Commandos which caused much hair to be yanked out of German Commanders hair due to how irritating they were.

9:28 This was always something that confused me when I was younger. I saw Saving Private Ryan with German soldiers shooting 5 round bolt action Mauser rifles, against Americans with semi-auto M1 Garand rifles. I thought to myself *They didn't stand a chance. They were using WW1 technology against American semi-auto rifles and British 10 round Enfields. Man for man, the Allies had more firepower* . I didn't realize that the two forces had 2 *very different doctrines* . The Germans had FAR more medium to heavy machine guns, as mentioned at 9:36. When compared bullet-to-bullet, a German infantry squad could actually put down just as much firepower (if not more) compared to an American/British squad. Their tactics revolved around riflemen supporting the machine gun crew, whereas the Americans and British had more rounds per-soldier and operated more independently. I'm glad the video mentioned this.
@DriveCarToBar3 жыл бұрын
Consequently, it's no accident that the Russians ramped up submachine gun production considerably. By the early part of 1944, the Red Army had begun converting 1 in 3 rifle platoons into SMG platoons. They learned in places like Stalingrad that fire superiority and quick moving squads were the key to beating the German tactic of using riflemen to support the MG42. American units adopted a similar tactic with their semi-auto rifles and BAR gunner(s). It was a favorite tactic of the Russians to send a charge of infantry to chuck grenades and lay down SMG fire in an attempt to force the MG42 to move, and when it moved, it would find itself either in perfect position to be hit by snipers or by the DP28 machine guns the Russians had moved in. Without the MG42, all you have are bolt action rifles and a non-com with an MP40 and an officer with a pistol or MP40. Not good odds against a Russian squad equipped almost 100% with PPsh-41s.

So this video makes out the SMLE to be a when it talks about the equipment. That is simply false, the reason the british didnt change their service rifle between the wars is due to the fact that the SMLE was a fantastic rifle, short, handy, accurate and reliable, with a large magazine and a fast bolt, the number 4 was definitely an upgrade, giving it a the minor upgrade of a bit of a longer barrel which improved its accuracy a bit and slightly increased the velocity of the round thereby giving it more energy and making it more powerful, the real upgrade was the rear sight, which was moved closer to the shooter and was an aperture style of sight, which are in general a better, more accurate, easier to use sight.

Yes "The attack was a failure but had a disproportionate effect on Hitler and Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW, German armed forces high command)." Basically through they outnumbered the Germans French and British forces failed in their counter attack and performed poorly. However, Hitler believed in non existent ability of French and British to fight and thus ordered situation to be resolved fearing a stronger and better counter attack. Hitler have given far more credit to the British and French units then they deserved.

One other thing to realize about the German invasion of France was that it was German infantry, paratroopers, and combat engineers that broke the line of fortifications from the forts in Belgium, the airbases in Holland, or the line of fortifications at Sedan, German infantry opened up the French line for the panzers to penetrate and run wild.

There is actually a story at the battle of the Marne, where a 12 man strong pioneer squad crossed the river and took out the frensh defense on there own, making the fortified brigdes crossable. The commanding sergeant got the iron cross for that, a transferation to the eastern dront and following KIA.

@ I will say the paratroopers did struggle in Holland but did end up making some progress and took key bridges and forts. As for the reason the allied front collapsed, the allies never had any intention of pushing in the Netherlands nor were the Dutch capable of mounting any major offensive operations. The French command style especially in regards to muddled and slow communication doomed the allied front if anything, besides the fact that the German Schwerepunkt of Army Group A just happened to be where two French Armies happen to border each other, leading to command breakdown and missed opportunities by the French to make any sizable successful countermove again the German drives. Even if Army group B suffered a major setback the fact that Army group A with the majority of the Panzer Divisions had opened up the front and threaten either the coast or Paris would have pushed the allies into retreat from their fight against Army Group B.

The VC stands for Vietnamese Communist. Isnt it basically the NVA ?
@minh10714 жыл бұрын
@@terryharris1291 first off, the NVA and the VC are basically the same. Secondly, during Tet Mau Than 1968, the VC only attacks the American and the South Vietnamese force presented there. Most of the VC forces are made up of civilians and volunteers themselves. In fact they even recruit civilians into their army. If you look at the statistics at the end of the Vietnam War. There was a total of 3.5 mil casualties for the Vietnamese side. 1.5 million are combatants and 2 million are normal civilians killed during bombing raids and the "search and destroy" campaign. There was an infamous event called "The My Lai massacre" in which the US thought that there were VCs disguised as villagers but in reality there was almost none. The US raided thousands upon thousands of villages and residents to search for VC throughout the war with their motto "rather kill all then accidentally left one alive". They destroyed most villages they marched through and almost always executed any men in the village as they were thought to be VC. At the end of that bloody campaign, there was a report saying that for every 50 people killed, 1 is a Vietcong. So in the end i think your opinion is invalid especially the part you said that the VC were "very good" at killing civilians.

Great work with sound historical information (to the best of my knowledge), as always. 0:06 I'm not sure why the German has his hand at that part of the stock, it's not a firing grip or a good place to use the weapon for Melee. 6:55 I wouldn't call the 9x19mm "powerful," but it's certainly not a sub-caliber round. It's the standard by which all other handgun rounds are judged Also, there's a difference between "power" and "penetration." A 230 grain .45 ACP and 115 grain 9x19mm (both in FMJ) bullet have the same kinetic energy, despite a significant difference in velocity - about 480 joules. But the .45 ACP will cause a greater wound, as ballistics gel tests readily demonstrate, because of the wider and heavier bullet (greater momentum and permanent wound cavity, etc.). So the .45 has greater "stopping power." But a .45 ACP will only go through 2 men's chests, it will stop in the 3rd. The 9mm will go through 4 or 5 men's chests (remember Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, shooting through 5 German soldiers with the pistol, on the tank? Like that!), because the same energy is focused into a point with the 9mm (the .45 is blunt) on a smaller diameter bullet that's traveling at higher velocity - giving it greater penetration. So you can see that "power" (as in stopping power, since both rounds have the same joules of force!) and "penetration" are different characteristics. Also, even the greater penetration of 9x19 won't go through most WW2 helmets, even at point blank, it depends on which nation makes them more than the round being used: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moOVqo1pqNCqZ9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXzZiWuVo8d3Y7s kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGOwkIysrrGejck Really, the German helmet could be shot through by any pistol round; and the Russian's 7.62x25 Tokarev has even greater penetration than 9x19mm, so the Russian pistol would pierce any helmet (including their own). The 9x19 wouldn't go through any helmet of the period that the .45 ACP wouldn't go through as well, and whatever helmet stopped the .45 ACP also stopped the 9mm. Although the .45 ACP and 9mm have marked differences in penetration (especially when both using FMJ bullets), against WW2 helmets, it's not enough of a difference to make any difference What I'm saying, is that it's not particularly remarkable how powerful the 9mm is, as .45 is more, and the 9 doesn't penetrate particularly well compared to 7.62x25 Tokarev, and so the limited ability of the 9x19mm to go through the helmets of the period isn't remarkable either. Also, the 9x19 wouldn't go through the Russian helmets at that distance None of these helmets are "bullet-proof," the way kevlar is; they are steel that will stop some pistol rounds some of the time, they aren't rated for repeat hits to the same area - or designed in such a way that the soldier's life is likely to be saved even if the bullet doesn't penetrate. Even the Russian helmet in the video I linked would never be given an NIJ rating of 3a (the level that stops 9mm 155 grain standard pressure FMJ). The bullet doesn't have to go through the helmet to kill or wound the person wearing it... www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a26548/the-evolution-of-us-military-helmets/ Also, you should have said "any helmet of the time," as helmets these days are regularly rated for 9x19mm FMJ (mine is!): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmmUpnqnoc56itk If you ever have any questions on firearms, ballistics, ammo, etc. I'm always happy to advise you and give you the exact words to get it precisely right and say what you're trying to say the way you're trying to say it without making any mistakes. I'm willing to do research and cite sources, etc. If you'd like to learn more about the effects of any kind of ammunition, I recommend Paul Harrell's YT channel. You do pretty good on the gun stuff, and I can see you've gotten a lot better recently (especially the Jadotville video, thanks for the primer to a great movie!), I just always see lots of little details I could help polish or correct, mostly the words you use. I could give you the correct terminology to use for any given thing on any given circumstance, that would still be very simple, quick to say, and easy to understand. I think it would add a bit of quality to your videos that gun guys would greatly appreciate Looking forward to the next one, as always

Are you able to answer questions about heavy artillery? If so, I've got a question regarding the likelihood of a 40mm or 5in cannon shell entering the water from a shallow angle and still packing enough force to damage a U-Boat that is at periscope depth or thereabouts. BTW, I'm referencing the scene in the movie Greyhound where a scenario like this happened.

The British field equipment and webbing had one huge advantage over the German equipment. It didn't rattle as you moved. Each individual piece of German equipment was excellent, but it wasn't put together as a system.
