A British airline passenger has died after a Singapire Airlines flight from Heathrow was hit by severe turbulence and diverted to a Bangkok airport.
A spokesman for Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where the flight was diverted to, said the 73-year-old man suffered a suspected heart attack.
Singapore Airlines said the flight encountered “sudden extreme turbulence” over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin at 37,000 feet about 10 hours after departure, with the pilot declaring a medical emergency and diverting the plane to Bangkok.
One of the passengers on board Flight SQ321 to Singapore said the plane suffered a “dramatic drop”, meaning people not wearing a seatbelt were “launched immediately into the ceiling”.
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We are responding to the emergency landing in Bangkok of a Singapore Airlines flight and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Singapore Airlines said: “Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, operating from London Heathrow to Singapore on May 20, encountered severe turbulence en-route.
“We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board.
“Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.”

This is why you are told to keep your seatbelt on when seated, even if the seatbelt sign is off. Although I'm not saying the dead/injured were seated but not wearing belts. But this is a perfect example of why to not ignore that safety advice. Turbulence is invisible. You don't know it's there until you fly into it. Belt up when seated. It might just save your life.

@@juliewoolley8579 You get a warning if the pilots are made aware that turbulence is ahead. Normally reported by an aircraft miles ahead that encounters it first. The pilots received no such warning so had no way to know there was turbulence ahead and certainly no way to know it would be so severe.

It wasn't the turbulence per se. It was the unfortunate passenger not understanding why pilots recommend keeping the seatbelt on.

I once was on a flight that suffered such severe turbulence everybody was vomiting over their seat rests into the aisles and between their legs. The stench of vomit and having to get off the plane stepping on slimy vomit was horrendous. And outside the plane on the boarding bridge waiting was a team of cleaning staff of at least 30 people waiting to get in to clean the plane as we got off it.

You can have a heart attack at 40. Colleague husband just ended up in ICU with his heart. Might be the end of his career. When I was 24 a guy at my university the same age had a heart attack and died on the basketball court. My dad is 76 and has no intention of flying anywhere. Too much stress.

@@shokdj1 you seem to be missing the point completely which is worrying, the guy died due to the stressful situation he was put in on the plane due to the “turbulence” so basically the turbulence killed him, surprised no other passengers died when they were flung from there seats, don’t underestimate turbulence, it’s extremely dangerous when trapped in it on a plane

It looks like the overhead luggage compartments might have opened and hit people with belts on in their seats. 6,000 feet in five minutes is a drop rate of nearly 100 mph, no wonder there are so many injuries. It is the Rainy Season in SE Asia and there are many huge storms around.

You must be dumb or something, and can tell you’ve never been on a plane before, once the plane has took off and at a stable altitude you can take your seatbelt and is only required with extreme turbulence or when landing in this case it was already too late to warn the passengers to belt up

I've just recovered from a seizure trying to decipher your comment. This has nothing to do with Singapore airlines, every plane can experience turbulence, and every airline have the same suggested advice on keeping your seatbelt fastened at all times. Your comment is pointless.

Singapore airlines, while itself being expensive, has a budget division called "Scoot". Scoot is the cheapest most basic flight to Asia you can buy. You know it's cheap because they don't supply free water and if you use the seat in front to support yourself it will feel like it is collapsing. The plastic being so ridiculously thin and flimsy. Also, for some reason, flying with Singapore airline's Scoot was the most uncomfortable flight I have experienced. Even painful. Personally, even though I am a budget traveler and regularly fly to and from Asia, I avoid them like I would avoid dog excrement. Believe me, I prefer budget over quality but not this low level scrimping. On an 11 hour pressurised flight you expect to be comfortable and kept alive with water. You get none of this with Singapore airlines's Scoot.
@Annabelle_UwU
@Annabelle_UwU 11 күн бұрын
Very important to distinguish that normal Singapore Airlines flights are perfectly fine but are more expensive. You're generally paying for an Airline that has well-trained staff and an excellent safety record. A lot of the budget airlines that you get in the same competition/area usually skimps on training, so if you're flying Scoot, you're probably going to be much safer so it's up to you whether it's worth the trade-off because they clearly cut costs to hit the ticket price. Personally, Singapore Airlines is an Airline that I prefer to fly on since I don't really want to risk my life unnecessarily.
