This video will cover the second iteration of the mk6 helmet this being the mk6a. Now the mk6a was created as a fill gap measure for British soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan who needed increased head protection because the old mk6 didn't offer enough. So the ministry of defense and NP aerospace just made what is essentially a thicker mk6 helmet and painted it black to distinguish it from the older mk6. This helmet offers I creaed protection from the mk6 at the cost of additional weight but that weight is dispersed better via a mesh crown pad instead of the old nylon webbing and loop system. Hopefully you liked this video and subscribed if you like this sort of stuff. Please leave a comment with any questions or suggestions for future videos and I will do my best to answer them. As always thanks for watching.
Thank you,
Devin K.

I believe it's painted black so that, at a glance, it can be recognised as a Mk6a and NOT a Mk6. The helmet cover is probably just two standard covers (DesDPM with elastics removed) sewn to make it reversible. If genuine (which it looks), there'll be a label in it. If you unstitch the seam (yeah, I know: who'd want to), you'll probably find them on the inside. Labels are at the inside front of the covers. Thanks for the video/info.

I can confirm the Mk6A helmet is made of kevlar / aramid. I was originally issued a Mk6 (ballistic nylon) and currently own a well-worn Mk6a as a civillian. When the Mk6 is scratched or chipped, you would see that the colour of the material remains green with a uniform material structure (almost as though it is injection moulded). When the Mk6A is scratched or chipped you will see a gold or yellowish colour under the matte black paint, with sandwhich layering visible at the rim, a tell-tale sign of kevlar / aramid material.

Well np aerospace says it’s ballistic nylon although a different type and the resin they use is a yellowish color but the origins material was actually an off white where in the vast majority of mk6 helmets the material should be black but was bound with layers of green fabric for structure

It's nothing to do with having a "3a rating" or "thickness", but rather because it's made from ballistic nylon and therefore provides less protection than modern helmets. Ballistic nylon doesn't expire (which is why the British used in it the first place), but have lower performance than aramids. The MK6a is made using a better material (rumoured to be aramid) which give it more strength (and therefore protection). It's a common misconception that the MK7 replaced the MK6a - The MK7 is only issued to those that operate "outside the wire"/first line units/tooth and require a helmet that does not interfere with shooting while in the prone position, everyone else used MK6a. To this day the MK6a is still used. If you sign up today, you will get get a MK6a. And I don't know where you get the part about "needlessly tall collar" of the Osprey, or that the MK7 helmet was designed for that - Because that collar (which is removable) is where is should be for top cover (sentry/gunner). Those on the ground went without collars (or used the compact "patrol collar" in later years). Again, the MK7 wasn't designed/implemented due to the collar of the Osprey armour, but to make it easier for shooting prone. And there are no "black MK7" helmets - Those are the early CTT/AC900 helmets which is what the MK7 was based on.

the thing that annoys me about the MK6 is the single loop retention piece at the back that always shifts around, so when you go to clip it to your chin, the whole helmet is pulled across your head. Other then that, it's fine

Hey Devin, a question from the Netherlands. When the SHTF what helmet would you choose, kevlar/aramid or ballistic nylon like the British MK6A? Especially for UV light, and why?

No helmet at all is what I would take. It’s to much weight and most everything goes right through as far as rounds that would be coming towards you, and most impacts helmets stop are just soldiers bumping their head so a hat could do the same job.

Is this made of the same non-degrading ballistic nylon as the Mk6? I know the Mk7 will degrade over time like your standard Kevlar helmet will.
@DevinK

You have to punch two holes through the cover, each side. Best way is to fit the cover, mark the holes with a pen. Remove and cut the holes. If you're keen, paint around the hole edges to prevent fraying.

Why do some people say the Mk 6A has kevlar in it?
@DevinK
@DevinK 3 жыл бұрын
Because they don’t know how to read or just believe rumor. But the place that made them literally says they don’t have kevlar in them... but people are lazy

@@DevinK It never made sense to me, but I cannot find actual source data so I only had my gut feeling they were still nylon to go on. I have ordered a 6A version because they said the Mk 6 had indefinite service life, so 6A is 40% better and same technology so it should be a nice piece for display which would be useful at any time in the future if it were really needed.

@@DevinK Do you have any documents which I can show people definitively? I saw one KZbin comment said "According to documents, MK6A contains both ballistic nylon (nylon 6, 6) and aramid. It is not a full aramid helmet" but I cannot find any official or genuine information on the Mk6A. I'd appreciate it if you could supply any data/leaflet links? Thanks
